It was a combination of the two. Although Jaws had planted the seeds of doubt concerning Hollywood's set-up at that time, it wasn't until Star Wars was released that studio heads really responded and acted towards this new phenomenon (Lucas has mentioned many times that SW was a joke to the studios, and they never expected it to make any money when it was released).

Default Star Wars: Episode VII

Disney would not pit Avengers against Star Wars or vice versa in the same month, would they!?
Again, it took three weeks for 'The Avengers' to be dethroned by 'Men in Black 3'. That's about the time all the 'Star Wars' films were released in May, so it wouldn't dramatically effect either box office. They'll both have long legs at the theaters regardless, and they're both guaranteed a ton of money. It would honestly be a no broader to me, because Disney could practically own all of May and a good part of June.

Winter release will NEVER happen. A spring/early summer release sets up a holiday home video release perfectly, which is the next big pay day. It's a double dip from a revenue standpoint to get both in the same year.

If you release is winter (I assume you mean Nov/Dec) you will see a much softer home video release the following summer than you would a holiday home video release. A major home video release sees peak sales for a couple weeks at the most, at that point 95% of interested buyer have bought it. A major holiday release can see a full 5 or 6 weeks of peek sales because you get the big 2 week sales from people buying it for them selves, plus you get the full 5 or 6 weeks of people buying it as gifts..

The formula for getting the most money out of a blockbuster is a Spring/Summer theater release and a holiday home video release...period.

And I didn't even mention the advantages of merchandising and spin off products that bring in money...

I'd put money on Star Wars coming out in May 2015. It's a tradition and plus as someone said above, not only would it make a huge summer blockbuster, it would be out on Blu-ray/DVD at the end of the year for the Christmas sales.

I know all the internet focus is on Episode VII but I was hoping for a whisper this weekend on a possible blu-ray release of the Original Trilogy Theatrical Versions.

Will never happen. Fox owns all of that.

Disney actually owns Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Fox only owns the first one.

Of course it will happen. It's just a question of does Disney buy Fox out of the picture or split home distribution profits with them.

Actually nope, as we are talking about home video distribution rights, Fox owns Empire & Jedi until 2020, and Star Wars in perpetuity...again if a deal isn't made by Disney to buy out Fox all together.

Star Wars will come out in mid-June or July to give Avengers room to breathe. The May tradition is not important and Marvel films are now the May tradition for Disney

You don't think the May tradition will matter to LucasFilm? Highly unlikely.

Also, if they released it in July, they're stepping on their own toes again, because of 'Pirates 5' coming out that month, and in June their Pixar film 'Inside Out' is coming out. The best thing to do it release it at the end of May, when 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' is cooling down. You keep the tradition, you don't hurt the bottom line of either films, and you steal the entire month of May and June, meaning Disney/Lucasfilm/Marvel/Pixar will completely own all of May and June. That would be incredible for them, and very few studios will be able to capitalize on that much success that way. I'm still betting a late May release, most likely Memorial Day Weekend.

I hate to beat a deadhorse with this part as well, but it was that third weekend in May when 'The Avengers' finally fell from the top spot to 'Men in Black III', a series that's not nearly as big as 'Star Wars'. That's around the time the original trilogy films were released. Clearly, Lucasfilm is trying to keep with the tradition of the series, bringing Williams back to score it, having Lucas' input, and bringing the original stars back...The release date will follow tradition as well.

Why does it matter MIB III beat out Avengers? Avengers went on to make a billion dollars, and MIB 3 whimpered out after 2 weeks.

My point about that is, that's when 'The Avengers' started to a gradual decline down in the box office. The second isn't going to have the same hold as the first did, that was the first time a movie like this had ever been released, and I say that as someone who loves the first. That's the perfect time to release 'Star Wars VII' because it means you've let the your first monster film make a huge bulk of its money without effecting it, and you're not going to entirely destroy its bottom line, or the bottom line of the new film. They'll both be able to exist and make a ton of money. It's a solid way to look at the box office trends, and how they can perform.

If I remember right. Avengers actually made more money in the second and third weeks because the word of mouth on it was phenomenal that summer. Star Wars will make money no matter what time of the yeat it comes out, or what it goes up against.

Yes, it will always make money. But when you have six previous films released in May in a series, you really think they'll change that now? Doubtful. 'The Avengers' did have amazing word of mouth, and that pushed that film. But it'll decline eventually. Giving it three weeks of room to breathe is plenty of time, keeps the May tradition, and gives Disney a full capitalization on that month in returns. They'd be crazy to pass it up, since no one else is willing to go up against Marvel's juggernaut.

Negative.
Disney did not just pay $4 Billion for the Avengers franchise. They did with the Star Wars franchise. Avengers will ride shotgun. It's just that simple.

I think these new Star Wars movies will make less than the prequels. That's my feeling since people hated the prequels, and each new prequel made less money.

Bringing back Ford, Hamill, and Fisher is going to make people go to these in droves. Like when 'Fast & Furious' brought Diesel and Walker back to that series, and how 'Days of Future Past' will bring people in droves with the return of the original cast. People want to see the characters they love return, and it's usually when you do that that people flock back to theaters. Put that with the guy who made the two last 'Star Trek' films, which were both wildly popular with critics and general audiences, you've struck gold. No way these make less than the prequels. Many analysts are already predicting an easy $1 billion take, at minimum, for 'Episode VII'.

No doubt! Many of the pieces are in place, with more to be added in the coming months. This could be a record breaker alright!
