At SDCC Trank said they were still putting some touches on the movie. I hope one of those touches is ADR for the Thing's voice, though I doubt it.

Thing is the only member of the four who hasn't been shown speaking in any of the TV spots or trailers, until the international trailer the other day where he has a brief line and says "you can't fix this, no one can" that goes by in the blink of an eye.

It comes off as Fox hiding him, because Bell's voice coming out of the Thing is silly. Maybe I'm wrong, but when Reed, Johnny, and Sue get lines in every TV spot and trailer and Ben doesn't, it looks like Fox is actively avoiding showing him speaking.

I doubt that was Bell in the Denny's commercial. Just like how I'm sure it wasn't Andrew Garfield in the Spider-Man costume for the United States Postal Service and the Evian water commercials.

In any event, the Thing in that commercial didn't sound like the Thing in the most recent international trailer, and that trailer has more clout than a Denny's hamburger ad.

Man Of Steel was pretty much mixed. I wouldn't call it a success. Batman VS Superman doesn't even look dark, it just looks epic. This Fantastic Four film is going to have to do a lot for Mr Fantastic's stretching ability to not look stupid in a movie that's supposed to be grounded.

And think about all the different monster movies that take ridiculous conceits (vampires, werewolves, interdimensional monsters, aliens) and treat them in a very grounded, serious way.

But none of them in any way look ridiculous. Mr Fantastic basically does but it doesn't matter in the comics because Marvel's first family is treated with a light tone with a light sense of humour. They don't try to ground it in reality.

Early along Trank made reference to David Cronenberg. He was the guy who remade the 50s movie about a guy who got into a transporter with a fly and came out part-man, part-fly. In the fifties movie, the scientist came out of the transporter with a huge fly's head and huge fly arm attached to his human body. The fly had his tiny human head and tiny human arm attached to its fly body.

Pretty silly, non-grounded stuff. Cronenberg took the same idea and grounded it. And it worked really, really well. It was still a fairly silly conceit but the scientist's transformation as a result of getting his genes mixed up with the fly's made for a darned good movie.

The Fly was always a horror, though. The Fantastic Four comics are basically a comic-book superhero comedy. It's not supposed to take itself serious.

I hope this movie defies everyone's expectations. As much as I would love for the rights to be under Marvel/Disney so we can have a shot-for-shot remake of The Incredibles with Fantastic Four characters instead (Tony Stark, Bruce Banner as Edna Mode-type obviously), a little competition to keep everyone's comic book movie game up is good for the fans.

IF the Fantastic Four did go back to Disney-Marvel there'd still be the X-Men for the competition side of things and Fox's X-Men movies are more highly regarded than their Fantastic Four ones so far.

I for one have boycotted this movie from the announcement of the casting and will continue to do so I have even managed to avoid all trailers
