Really enjoyed Blackbird, also Succession.

A/V quality was quite solid, didn’t notice any artefacts, unlike most streaming.

I've only watched a handful of Apple TV shows. Blackbird and Severance were outstanding. Servant was good but it should have been better.

They should also be able to get residual costs to acceptable levels as they know how much a show is viewed and its basically content they already own.
Are you referencing the time that the Pandemic was raging? March 2020 - December 2021?

Its not a revenue problem its a spending problem and a diversification problem. Their isn't much of a reason why a portion of Disney catalog isn't rotating around hulu , netflix etc while also existing on Disney plus or why 4k products are ending up on disney plus without a physical release. most of these moves mean disney plus has a crazy high operating cost in hopes of eventually getting that streaming monopoly.
Actually it's both or else Disney wouldn't have raised their no ads version 38% with another increase coming soon. That's what will make Disney+ profitable: cut spending and raise the monthly sub cost.

You have to be aware that physical media is no longer a priority due to it's shrinking marketplace. 4k UHD BD is a tiny portion of the PM market.

And once again the facts of the matter . . . Disney+ revenue is going up while losses are going down. That means they are on the right track.

Not according to Iger:

https://www.mediaplaynews.com/says-c...-disney-focus/

Quote:
Iger believes the push toward streaming theatrical titles undermined the licensing and retail businesses.

“Home video, at one point as we called it, was extremely lucrative for our company,” Iger said. “We’re looking at all of that [again].”

They had already agreed to the Mill Creek deal before he made that statement. He said it was something they were looking at, correct? He didn’t say it was imminent. No doubt they will be looking at options in greater detail.

They haven't committed to anything yet. But at least he is exploring the possibility that it could be a viable revenue source that was largely ignored under Chapek.

And as Steedeel said, the Mill Creek deal was essentially a renewal of an existing deal.

And they more than likely waited on Avatar to exhaust theatrical and VOD revenue.

Amazing isn't it. He cut his teeth at Disney on DVD and BD.

So PM revenue isn't as important as VOD revenue. That's what you're saying. And when you look at the numbers - it's a fact.

VOD release date: March 28th.

PM release date June 20th

They jumped on the bandwagon and paid the price. Now, they need to claw back as much income as possible. It’s that simple. Disc is a very mature technology that has proven itself over time, Disney+ and streaming in general ? Not so much, to say the least.

It’s not a good idea to leave money on the table, even though the thought of disc and disc lovers seems to trigger you for some reason.

It's also a fact that PM will provide even more revenue. And I would wager a good bit that it's more revenue than they would receive slapping it on a streaming service. I would also wager that we will indeed see more PM releases from Disney because it is a more viable revenue source than streaming.

Well - you are entitled to your opinion. Unfortunately the numbers are going against you.

And yes, Disney will "slap" Avatar 2 on Disney+. I'm sure they will tell us how many new subs it brought in. My guess - a ton.

Disc's heyday has come and gone. What Iger will be looking at to bring in billions of dollars, something disc can't do, is licensing out content. That is one area where he made a mistake and Disney paid for it. He will be correcting it . . . immediately.

Priorities - something you are having trouble understanding due to your blind loyalty.

No one is arguing differently. Disc would be incremental, obviously.

Priorities turned out well for Disney+, didn’t it? Only took them a good two years to realise theatrical was essential.

By the way, heyday or not, disc is still a great bet, it’s number one in my house. 24 years of greatness and still going. I doubt Disney+ will be able to hang around that long. They are the HD DVD of the streaming world!

Great, let him license out content to boutique labels for physical releases. I have zero problems with that.

My blind loyalty? If you mean to physical media then yes, I am blindly loyal to the superior format for home entertainment. It's certainly better than paying monthly for something I don't own and can be removed at any time. I might as well throw my money in the garbage. Or, I can spend it on a disc that is mine forever and can never be altered or removed. Which sounds like the better deal to you?

It is no different than your blind loyalty to digital. But in your case you get to spend money on content that can be removed and altered without your say. Your corporate overlords appreciate your naivete and your willingness to give them money in exchange for vaporware. It works out great for them.

Yes, it will bring in new subs, who will then immediately cancel until the next big release. Great business plan.
