"Sailor Moon Crystal" Anime Sequel Announced

Japanese Blu-ray of original series also announced

We recently noted that it has been six months since the ending of Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal - Season III and its adaptation of the "Death · Busters" arc. So, ready for some new anime? A new phase of the Sailor Moon 25th anniversary project has been announced. Along with plans for the first Japanese Blu-ray release of the original 1992 anime, a Sailor Moon Crystal sequel anime was revealed.

Two 23-episode Blu-ray collections will be released on June 14th and August 9th at 21,384yen each. Additional details on the new Crystal are promised for a later date.

That was the DVD era where there were 8 different kinds of region locks. Blu Rays have a more simplified 3, though a lot of Blus are region free. Region A does apply to North America and Japan, the only downside would be no English subtitled or audio tracks.

Artwork is better than VIZ, I guess, but still not my ideal look for a release.

So the 20th anniversary which has ran for 5 years straight (and is still appearing on upcoming merchandise) has now morphed in to the '25th Anniversary'... someone needs to tell them anniversaries are no longer special if they are celebrated for years on end.

so does this mean the transfer will be better then what Viz has been popping out? Also does this mean Viz will be doing a re release with these transfers?

If it's what was aired on TV in Japan recently, yes, but not by that much. It's a smeary DNR'd upscale that looks worse than the DVDs. Also extremely doubtful VIZ will do a re-release with these.

Well I think it's preset shady of toei to have had plans all along for their own blu ray. And btw I think Viz doing their own blu ray was just a way to make money off sailor moon.

Toei isn't likely to ever include a dub and only the first 2 seasons of the entire series were ever released in sub-only form on DVD in NA. Also, while VIZ may be wanting to "make money off" SM, it's not like the rights for the series go on sale every day. VIZ had to pay for them, but they were also trusted to deliver a good dub and blu-ray release (we only have 1/2 so far lol). I don't know if they could have done a better job with dubbing or video quality, but from what I remember, it was Funimation vs VIZ when it came to buying/obtaining the rights. I'm curious, but I also feel like Funimation wouldn't have had the best voice actors for the series.

It isn't shady. Viz wanted to do Blu-rays before Toei released theirs so Toei gave them the bad masters. Maybe Viz will release Sailormoon versions of the Dragon boxes later later based on Toei's Blu-rays.

Viz licensed Sailor Moon for the same reason any other distributor licenses any other anime series.

All I'm saying is Viz could of done just a DVD. I think the blu rays were just a way for Viz to make more money off sailor moon. When people see blu ray they right away think new remaster and buy it.

Blu-ray/HD > DVD, just sucks that we haven't gotten a proper release.

It's also 2017, makes more sense to offer higher quality releases than SD for the 100th time.

You don't know if they had plans for two years. And of course Blu-ray was a way to make more money, because lots of people still fail to realize you can mess up a Blu-ray enough to look worse than DVDs. It's still happening today, both here and in Japan (so many bad upscales I could list here, some people here own like Gankutsuou).

Toei's incompetence was likely going to give us something bad anyway. Though if only VIZ had demanded the remastered DVD masters.

And VIZ definitely will not be re-releasing the series. It's not worth it that much anyway. The Japanese upscale (what was aired on TV nearly two years ago) looks worse than the DVDs. While as you can see here it still beats VIZ's Blu-rays (not saying much), it still doesn't look good. Toei refuses to properly remaster/upscale their SD shows. Never have high expectations when it comes to Toei (Recommended reading here).

That's because VIZ sucks not because the video quality is bad on its own.

I keep going back and forth on whether I should buy these sets or not as these sets are so bad. Then I wonder if I should just get the regular sets or spend the extra money and get the limited editions (the episode books are nice) but then again I don't want to support these lousy releases by spending more $. Decisions...decisions
