Basically, "The ADV Films and Manga Entertainment dubs are no longer canon." The FUNimation dubs for 1.01, 1.11, 2.22, and 3.33 likely are no longer considered official as well.

They just did the translation and got flak for the Episode 24 lines (which oddly enough were similar to ADV's original VHS subs). There were no visual edits.

But yeah, the fact the FMTTM isn't included here sucks.

???

There are no cuts or censored scenes in the Netflix version. The video is the video, the subtitles are the subtitles. If you don't like the translation that's fair enough but you won't be missing any content.

It's also no surprise that it's being labeled the "Official" dub and translation. It's the one Khara approves and that they feel properly represents the work.

This doesn't make sense. You can have whatever preference you want, but "official" has a meaning. The Netflix translation is the one Khara oversaw and approved, it's the official version. At least they kept it objective and didn't name the ADV dub (or the "Classic dub") something subtly derogatory, I'm sure then we'd have even more pointless outrage.

Official doesn't designate quality though, if the casting and ADR direction was so good they would of been brought on to redub the Rebuilds, they were not. It's ADV and or JP Dub, Netflix dub doesn't exist for me, I gave it 5 mins of my time and I thought my ears were going to bleed, I could careless if its a more "faithful translation", if I want the most faithful translation i'll watch the JP dub with subtitles. Even the "faithful translations" have been criticized recently by Tiffany Grant.

So it does make sense. The official dub is the preference of the viewer.

I apologize, I was mistaken about there actually being scenes edited/cut from the Netflix version. I must have translated all the community rage toward the altered dialogue and terrible localization as Netflix “editing whole scenes” and misremembered. Those of you getting this for the subs should be fine.

I feel like these two points contradict each other, but it's w/e

Call it what you want, I don't think many people are actually going to use the "official"/"classic" name scheme anyway

That's not how it works. If the company who owns the franchise is saying the VSI/Netflix dub is official, then it is official? That's like disliking an official music video from a band and saying you prefer a fan made edit over it. You can prefer whichever you want but it doesn't change the facts.

ADV Films dub
Amazon dub
FUNimation dub
Manga Entertainment dub
Netflix dub

That's much simpler and how I will refer to these dubs. Remember when things were simpler?

The new subs are subpar well beyond the issue of that one Kaworu line.

Yes it is how that works lol Its not Khara designating the Official and Classic dub, its GKids.

I doubt that very much. You know Khara made sure everything was worded perfectly and looked exactly how they wanted it. If I had to guess, I'd say Khara 100% consider it to be Official/Classic.

If the Netflix dub is the canon one... Why didn't the Netflix actors come back to do the rebuild movies.

Because the original voices already did the first 3, it makes sense to have them do the final movie.

I might be out of the loop here but it sounds like the official/classic terminology used for anything other than referring to this release is just semantics. I’m pretty sure they chose to say official and classic more so it was less “confusing” for the average consumer than saying Netflix dub and ADV dub, and less about how they should be viewed across the industry. Probably thinking too much into it…

Pretty much no one ever says stuff like "official dub" and "classic dub". Your average joe who only learned what Evangelion is for the first time today would still be like "Official dub? Classic dub?"

Eh not really unless it gets confirmed as such it's just a gkids naming convention nothing more, nothing less

Labeling them the Netflix and ADV/Manga dubs would be more clear to us in the know, but GKids is probably also hoping to attract more casual viewers into springing for some version of the set who probably don't even know what ADV/Manga (the [awful] company) are. For legal or company reasons, they also may not wish to namedrop them.

They've given us the information we were looking for either way, so I don't understand the point of arguing semantics, especially when if there's ever going to be one "official" or "canon" track it's almost always going to be the original Japanese one, while dozens of foreign language dubs happily exist around its orbit and often come and go.

I was interpreting it more as GKids saying “this is the new/latest dub” and “this is the old dub”. Probably better sounding than New dub and Old dub. I see your point though.

An alternative to "Official dub" and "Classic dub" is just to use years of when they were made. I mean, FUNimation's releases of Escaflowne don't list "FUNimation dub, Bandai dub" on the specs on the back cover, they list the years.

Also, casuals who have never seen the show before aren't likely to drop $300 sight unseen, this release is geared towards the collectors with an ineslastic demand for Evangelion.
