This goes for things in general, but it's not a good idea to judge a film/TV show/anime/book/manga or whatever based on a score by a website where people put down their scores and are averaged into a big one (like MAL).

I can partially agree with you, but I think if the majority of people think something is of a certain quality, they may have a point. Perhaps take the score into account and check out the first episode to see if it may be something you'll like.

It's good, that's why it has so many seasons. I've only seen the first, and while it's nothing earth shattering I'd say 7 is a pretty good score on MAL especially for something that isn't shonen and as unique as Symphogear. I'll admit it's not for everyone, idols fighting in somewhat skimpy battle armor using their voices (which is kind of a seiyuu promoting thing, there have been lots of live concerts), so it's probably going to be more popular in Japan than here, especially since you can't really dub it.

Note that MAL users are known for not rating stuff harshly, and many rate on a 7-10 scale instead of 1-10. It used to be stupidly rare to see shows with an average score below 7.0, and stuff below 5.0 is still quite rare. MAL scores should be taken with an extremely small grain of salt. Now if you look at a site like AniDB which is also full of more older fans, they're known for rating much more harshly, stuff below 4.0 can be a common sight.

I mostly just use it for the list/database feature and scores. I don't bother with the community. I don't get along with most community's on the internet and the anime one is no different lol

I can usually tell by the plot summary, studio and art if the show is going to be trash or at least not to my taste. I've been watching anime long enough to know that
