The Seven Samurai is widely considered one of the 10 best films ever made. It would certainly be in my top 10. It's incredible!

No problem.

For me, I buy films because I like them. I could care less about if it's not on blu (or "Criterion"). I buy vhs sometimes. Considering 95% of my fav movies are only on dvd or haven't been released at all, it's fair to say I buy more dvds. Let's just say there are way more films that have never even had a dvd release that I love more than what has been announced on blu-ray so far. I'm not a "tech" person (so really I am amazed I lasted this long on this forum, only signing up to ask a question, hence why I had a generic username that was changed, and here I am today).

It's one of the films that I've appreciated more and more over time as I've read more about it and after multiple viewings. Upon my first viewing, it didn't strike a chord with me but the more I learn about this film, and others, I find myself liking them a great deal more.

let me rephrase. if i see a film on Blu with anything approaching a decent transfer, then the dvd is out the window.
if it isn't out on Blu and i don't own it, i wait.

That's ridiculous. And hilarious. Hopefully 12 Angry Men wasn't the only film in that order!

[Show spoiler]

Well, I would expect a large box if it is going to contain 12 angry men.

Are you buying the Time Bandits just for collections sake? It is non-anamorphic and only has the trailer for extras, would upgrade to the Image blu if I were you (although I've heard the PQ is reprehenisble and is in 1080i).

Nice pick up on the General Idi Amin btw, great documentary.

I wouldn't say the DVD of Last Emperor is superior in content. Yes, you get the longer TV cut of the film, but that version was basically disowned by Bertolucci and the theatrical cut is his director's cut. The picture on the blu is superior, but the aspect ratio is wrong on both editions, unfortunately.

Somebody else posted a week or so ago and I responded something to the effect of 'no, everybody looks like they're in the right place' which they are - on the cover art at Criterion's site and Amazon and here and pretty much everywhere else except on the actual cover (which I just picked up last Fri).

Almost makes me want to grab a few more...

Thanks for the input. After watching M (I now consider it one of the best movies I've ever seen), I thought I'd start delving into the Criterion library. I've got 12 Angry Men, The Phantom Carriage, Hunger, Charade, The Red Shoes and now Seven Samurai on queue

It's more than one disc, and Criterion's Scanovo clear-plastic cases they use are only single disc.

In a nutshell, it's about a town that gets ransacked by evil doers, so they hire 7 samurai to fight them off.

Also, "Yes" the film is good.
Oh, I thought Samurai was the only movie that has a digipack-style packaging. Is every Criterion film with more than one disc in a digipack?? I may ask a lot of questions, but blu releases just fill me with curiosity I think it's the first format where I've become really interested with films as an artform and not a way to pass time. There are a ton of movies I think I would never have thought about seeing or simply didn't know they existed, but then again, I'm also "older and wiser" And the fact that movies look beautiful on blu as well doesn't hurt my curiosity!! Regarding Samurai, see comment above.

The only DVDs I buy are of things I know won't get BD releases, like video compilations or pre-90's concerts. For movies, I'd rather download them and buy them in the future when they come out on blu. You know, not having the same movie twice (there are two or three movies in my collection that I've bought in every format since VHS) and just having the high-quality version
