Piracy is largely an online operation from start to finish. They do not need to source their files from DVDs or even blu-rays, both of which are easy to rip. FTP sites offer downloads in high definition and even in 4K of movies that are still in the theater and have yet to see a disc release. These are far and away the most lucrative source of ill gotten gain for pirates. It is the latest Mission Impossible movie that pirates want to sell, not a DVD rip of Old Yeller.

Killing DVDs will do absolutely nothing to deter piracy, but it will remove the best selling physical media format and that would make the remaining physical media formats a far less attractive product for studios to offer. Over half of their disc sales would disappear and pirates will continue mining the internet for content entirely unfazed.
As much as I love UHD and Blu, I still buy DVD for more ahem, specialised content!

I bought the CC BD, because it has vastly different special features than the Arrow Video 4K does not. I will most likely snag the Time Bandits 4K from Arrow next month since the special features will also be different.

Bought the Brother's Grimm BD cheap off of eBay, along with Tideland BD from Arrow, also from eBay.
I loved it, I. I’m guessing you will snap up the 4K disc like me?

You completely misrepresented that statement. Here's the important part you missed:

"The studios are missing out on profits by not... releasing titles that consumers want on disc."

He's saying that the best way to plug the bootleg hole is for the studios to release their own discs so customers that want discs don't have to resort to buying bootlegs.

It would in-fact increase piracy. If the studios stopped offering DVDs then people who want DVDs would just buy bootleg DVDs instead.

ok,... we are still on the piracy topic.

Let's vote -

If you had to choose

$250,000 fine or 5 years in prison ?

I personally can't decide which one I prefer so I just respect Intellectual Property laws. It also feels nice to support art that I love.

Bonus tip - about 30 years ago one of my teachers told the class "If you want to do anything wrong, don't use a computer to do it"

I suspect a very large percentage of the people buying bootleg DVDs and Blu-ray Discs aren't aware that they are bootlegs. They simply want to buy a specific movie or TV show on disc they search for it and the results that come up happen to be bootlegs.

I don't see any malicious intent from all the people who are buying The Mandalorian on eBay they just aren't aware that Disney hasn't released it on DVD or Blu-ray. It's hard to fault customers for not doing lots of research before every purchase.

I wish I enjoyed the Mandalorian or even Andor.

Thankfully, I do like She Hulk.

I may enjoy them if and when they do get a physical release.

I enjoyed Susperia and Phenomena a lot more when provided with the better audio tracks on disc. I watched both of those on steaming before purchase on UHD BD.

Audio quality really puts me into a presentation. It really does matter to me.

I like to assume that everything that doesn't have a physical release is terrible anyway. I'll never have any evidence to the contrary.

What is the likelihood that they will do away with digital cloud purchases like Vudu or iTunes Store movie purchases?

No idea. But, money matters quite a bit.

iTunes for example sells songs and stated - They will keep doing it as long as people keep buying them.

It's just like printing money... No one believes the terms of service that states you can lose the content at any time. And, ... I still have iTunes movies from 2008 so they have been the best at retaining stuff.

Of the 10 titles that I ordered, these three are the first to arrive:

and .

All three are blu-ray upgrades and I didn't really have to have them, but I wanted them so that's that.

I hope that everyone enjoyed my recent flurry of activity here, but it's back to St. Louis for another round of treatment tomorrow. Not to worry, tho, I am told that a little Vilya goes a very long way.

Speaking of absent where has Wendell gotten off to? Off on another road trip somewhere, maybe? gotmule needs to stop , too; come out and play with us!

I love Thelma and Louise so much but haven't found the moment to watch the new UHD BD copy yet.

I did watch Time Bandits ... I think that was on DVD last time. I think I also saw it in theaters back in time when I was about as young as the boy in the more or less main character role.

Been lurking a little when I have had a chance.

For our son's 50th birthday we treated he and wife to an Alaska visit via a Holland America cruise ship. After we returned to Seattle spouse and myself picked up where we left off 36 years ago on our tour of Oregon. She has kin living in central Oregon. We are in Portland now and will return to NC Saturday.

Some info to backup what some of us have said about streaming for some time, here (see last chart).

Low price is the most important consideration, picture quality is of little importance.
