Also that article on DVD bootlegs sounds absurd in 2023. cmon. lol.
read another article recently that suggested they should close standard movie theaters and open more IMAX to increase profits. |

So sorry. Putting down an animal is one of the hardest days in one's life. Cherish the memories, and if or when the time is right, you will bring another dog into your life which will bring joy to you and the pup.

I am so sorry to read this. There is an unmistakable bond we form with our pets, and making this decision is one that tears at your heart. It will get a bit easier as time goes on, but know that he is without pain and still with you.

Rented Sisu and A Few Good Men 4K discs from GameFly. I haven't seen either film. Sucks that Sisu got denied an Atmos track on disc. It played in Atmos in theaters for about a week and I missed it.

![]() ![]() Thanks to Wendell, I've been exploring the complicated task of rendering HDR accurately with my projector. My previous projector was best fed SDR/2020 essentially tone mapping the luminance to SDR levels while keeping the expanded colors of Rec 2020. My current projector has arrived at 2000 hours already but with it's laser based light engine there's more brightness than my screen can put up with. (The actual texture of the screen becomes distracting on the brightest scenes if it's not reduced.) The goal is balancing tone mapping ability while retaining accuracy. Progress is naturally slow, I have learned quite a bit from exploring. - In my case it's much better to run the video directly to the projector rather than though my sound processor. This is because my player and projector are far newer than my processor and HDMI has evolved. Thankfully my disc player has dual HDMI outputs. - SDR is simple and well defined and it's not too difficult to dial it in correctly. SDR is used as the basis for the HDR response and tone mapping so it's important to do the best possible most accurate setup of SDR. - choosing what color space to output from a source device requires investigating them all and maybe choosing between the limits of each. This is complex so permit me to quote from the documentation - "At some point, all video has to be converted to RGB, and the video on the disc is always stored in 4:2:0 Y’CbCr, so the choice of which color space to output from the player is really a choice as to which device will do which portions of the color conversion process. The whole conversion chain is 4:2:0 Y’CbCr to 4:2:2 Y’CbCr to 4:4:4 Y’CbCr to RGB (which is sometimes redundantly called “4:4:4 RGB”). In real processing chips, some of those steps may be combined for speed, but conceptually those are the processing stages. So if you output 4:2:2 Y’CbCr from the player, the display will do the rest, converting to 4:4:4 Y’CbCr and then to RGB." - There tends to be more controls on devices than you need or should use. Being a projector lover I don't know much about Dolby Vision but I do know it locks most of the controls that could be used to harm the image. In HDR10 it's best to not adjust contrast, color, and hue because the HDR response is again based on SDR baseline. My display lacks a sharpness control option and if it's present the best setting is the one that minimizes it's impact. And finally (sheesh) the thing I've learned most so far that really sticks out is to compare a baseline response from your equipment to any changes you make from that baseline. The philosophy repeated often is to bypass most extra processing and I firmly believe if it's not signal than it's noise. However, in my particular case there is a enhancement that I have found only improves the quality with no drawback. That's Laser Dimming mode 3. This feature was added via FW update and improved upon the 2 previous modes. It has the ability to turn off the light engine for fade to black and it's the single most impressive thing I have seen since getting interested in projectors in the late 90s. Just watched it last night and to say it was awesome and outrageous would be an understatement! It rocked! ![]() It's still a shame it doesn't have an ATMOS track, but it is worth checking out nonetheless. Maybe an English friendly import with Atmos will be released down the line. The film runs about 85 minutes without credits, too. |

Between being busy at work and my HT being out of commission while I upgraded my setup to 7.4.6, I've been movie deficient last week..
The stars aligned last night and my daughter and I finally got a chance to watch the new UHD of UPGRADE.. it's a movie that we both love ( I mean, who doesn't... it's AWESOME!), but had not seen in some time as I knew that a 4K presentation would come eventually... I had not watched it since I upgraded my projector, so this was an overall improvement for me even if the sight's review indicates that the video is only marginally better than the bluray... This movie will never be a title to show off your display, but the shadow detail and color gradations in this dark movie were very pleasing... but what really got me excited was how amazing the DTS X PRO upmixer worked on the carried over DTSMA track! I have always defaulted to DOLBY's upmixer on my 2 previous amps as I've found it less "gimmicky " than DTS 's NEURAL X. As the 6700 defaults to apply each companies respective upmixer to their own mixes, that's the way things played out last night without me even thinking about it. It appears that the jump to DTS PRO has had their engineers rework more than just a simple removal of the 11 channel restriction! Looks like there's going to be more testing of upmixers in my future after a few years of defaulting to DOLBY.. Anyways, the UHD of UPGRADE is a must have in your collection.. |

On a side note, I had a good chunk of time to finally watch John Wick 4 this morning and was blown away by it. Reference video with beautiful cinematography with killer audio. Loved the movie and where they took this franchise. It is discs like this that justify the investment and energy to have a home theater. Last edited by gotmule; 07-16-2023 at 05:01 PM. |
