Hey,
I think odds are no one will care but I wanted to correct myself for something I said a few posts ago. My sound processor was not clipping above white data. My projector will clip automagically to 16-235 unless you specify you want it to use 16-255. Simple thing but this was something I didn't notice until I tried to use the contrast pattern that shows full range including above white. Edit - Also ordered the German Justified set. I certainly never watched the complete series and liked what I have seen. It's been so long that a good part of it will be like seeing it the first time. -Brian Last edited by bhampton; 07-23-2023 at 01:10 PM. |

Watched Sisu 4K and the Covenant this week. Both solid flicks, but I enjoyed Covenant more with Jake and Dar Salim’s performances sticking with me. It needs a 4K release at some point and will be a for sure double dip.

The Asus PA32UCX and PA32UCG are tempting too, but the prices... PA32UCG is the only high refresh rate 4K ProArt option.
Found out most of those really expensive gamer monitors don't even have HDMI 2.1, so you're getting 4K high refresh rate at only limited RGB. They almost all have really ugly aesthetics. Do gamers actually want designs like that or do manufacturers just THINK so? |

Most new monitors offer both DisplayPort and HDMI connectivity.
Rtings.com did this comparison between DisplayPort and HDMI: https://www.rtings.com/monitor/learn...vs-displayport DisplayPort 1.4 supports resolutions up to 8K at 60Hz while HDMI 2.1 supports up to 8K at 120Hz. Both support HDR. DisplayPort 1.4a only adds improved support for DSC (Digital Stream Compression). "Display Stream Compression (DSC) is a visually lossless compression technique developed by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) for use with displays to achieve larger resolutions at higher refresh rates. DSC is used in both DisplayPort 1.4+ and HDMI 2.1 standards." https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answ....1%20standards. One of the reasons why gamers prefer DisplayPort is that it supports both AMD's Freesync and Nvidia's G-Sync. HDMI only supports Freesync. DisplayPort also has the ability to connect multiple monitors to a single port, which is called called MST or "Multi-stream transport." Last edited by Vilya; 07-23-2023 at 10:56 PM. |

From what I've read, DisplayPort 1.4 can't do full range RGB at 4K and high framerate. It has less bandwidth than HDMI 2.1.
That Linus guy confirms at 4:31 in this review of the monitor I want. Last edited by Warm Gun; 07-24-2023 at 02:38 AM. |

DisplayPort 1.4 supports 4K at 120 Hz with 10 bit color and HDR. It also supports 8K at 60 Hz with 10 bit color and HDR.
It also supports 32 audio channels with a maximum sample rate of 1536 kHz. https://www.electronicshub.org/displayport-1-2-vs-1-4/ DisplayPort 1.4 supports 4K at 60 Hz with 24 bit color. It offers "support for 4:2:0 pixel structure which enables 8K x 4K displays." DisplayPort 1.4a offers "support for HDCP 2.2 and HDMI 2.0 with CEC." The new DisplayPort 2.0 offers "One 10K (10240×4320) display @60Hz and 24 bpp 4:4:4 (no compression)" OR "One 16K (15360×8460) display @60Hz and 30 bpp 4:4:4 HDR (with DSC)." It is still hard to find monitors that use DisplayPort 2.0, but even DisplayPort 1.4 likely more than satisfies 99.9% of its users. https://vesa.org/displayport-developer/why-displayport/ See also: Chroma Subsampling 4:4:4 vs 4:2:2 vs 4:2:0 https://www.rtings.com/tv/learn/chroma-subsampling "4:2:0 is almost lossless visually, which is why it can be found used in Blu-ray discs and a lot of modern video cameras. There is virtually no advantage to using 4:4:4 for consuming video content. " "Artifacts from chroma subsampling are at their most noticeable with text atop a flat color. The impact is far less visible in videos and photos." "While some PC games that have a strong focus on text might suffer from using chroma subsampling, most of them are either designed with it in mind or implement it within the game engine. Most gamers should therefore not worry about it." "Color subsampling is a method of compression that greatly reduces file size and bandwidth requirements with practically no quality loss." "It (color subsampling) has no noticeable visual imperfections otherwise and allows you to trade for much better advantages such as 10-bit color depth and HDR." This is the monitor that I have contemplated buying:
Asus ROG Swift PG32UQX Mini-LED ![]() Only $2300. ![]() Manufacturer's webpage: https://rog.asus.com/us/monitors/32-...pg32uqx-model/ In depth review here: https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews...pg32uqx-review Edit: I am no longer interested in this one. According to a video review it is a fantastic display that can reach almost 1800 nits with amazing color specs and 1152 local dimming zones, but it has poor motion clarity and response times. Given the heat and realizing I have all the ingredients in spare parts, ... I've decided to setup dive in movies. Time for shark movies in the pool.

It takes longer to get dark over here in the USA but maybe I can take a few pix.
Currently it's so day time I can hardly see the projected image. Dern sunshine. Setting everything up was pretty easy so far. Using mostly old stuff including a $5 Sony BDP from second hand store and a new $20 screen from Walmart. ![]() ![]() Last edited by bhampton; 07-24-2023 at 03:18 PM. |
