Bad news for moviegoers: Ads are making a comeback

Quote:
Movie ads are climbing back from pandemic lows. And while the development may not exactly be welcomed by impatient theatergoers, one company is applauding.

"Just as the movie theaters are coming back, cinema advertising is coming back," Tom Lesinski, CEO of National CineMedia (NCMI), a movie advertising company that emerged from bankruptcy last week, told Yahoo Finance on Friday (video above). He praised the entrance of "Barbie" into the $1 billion movie club as exhibitors saw record-breaking attendance levels in July.

"The movie business has been under a lot of distress during COVID, and we finally see the light back into business this summer with 'Barbenheimer,'" he said, referring to the "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" double feature that hit theaters recently.

So far this year, the box office has totaled more than $6.2 billion in sales, according to Box Office Mojo. Although that's roughly 15% below 2019 levels, the overall haul is still more than 20% higher than last year.

Amid that improving viewership, cinema ad spending in North America is expected to reach $763 million in 2023 and $839 million by the end of 2024, according to Statista. That's still shy of the $1 billion-plus the advertising segment saw in 2019 but more than three times 2020's spending levels as the pandemic hammered the industry.

I'll be honest, I had no idea that the population of Austraila is only around 26,000 people. I looked it up after reading this just to make sure I wasn't misunderstanding what you were saying.

While that is a decent amount of people in general, and I don't wish to see them lose direct access to Disney physical media releases, with that being the entire population, and with them being as remote as they are relative to the rest of the world, I can kind of see why this decision was made.

While I'm all in favor of physical media, given the general decline in interest in it, with streaming taking more of a foothold, and given that those who do collect physical media are going to pick and choose the titles that interest them (so the sales of any one given title will vary), I can see why distribution to Australia is becoming more complicated.

The population of Australia is 26,688,600. That's 26 MILLION.

The population of New Zealand is 5,223,100. That's 5 MILLION

I honestly welcome the ads in this case if it brings in more money, I always book my seat anyway so usually time it to catch the trailers.

Salmon tins are notoriously difficult to open here in the U.K. every other tin, easy! Actually broke four or five tin openers in the past trying to open the tin.

I do enjoy salmon sandwiches though, salt, black pepper and plenty of vinegar, subtle dollop of mayonnaise.

For Apple TV4K owners, sent the following request to a Xcode rep. Hope it gets forwarded to the right folks.

Can the Developer HUD (heads up display) be made a permanent part tvOS so that I don’t have to reinstall Developer HUD with every change of tvOS?

Also you need to change the following in the HUD because it appears to confuse some user:

Current item: indicated bitrate peak(numerical value)Mbps average(numerical value)Mbps
Change to: incoming bitrate peak(numerical value)Mbps average(numerical value

I would like this.

Apple wants to be simple above all other concerns so it's pretty counter to that goal.

You were lucky that your ER visit only took 2 hours. I don't think I have ever escaped an ER in under 4 hours.

Canadian's complain endlessly about our medical system.. specifically wait times.. but, for the most part, the tradeoffs to have a universal system are pretty minimal.

I knew within seconds of hacking off the tip of my thumb that I would need stitches and my first thought were of how much I didn't want to waste my Sunday evening sitting and waiting in an emergency room... but overall, the whole process went as well as it could have...

We're clearly in a new wave of COVID (as per waste water analysis) but they had me, and the other unfortunate wretches, effeiciently traiged and sorted.

I've had a couple of visits to the E/R in Florida over the years and have seen the bills that my company has had to pay for much more minor scrapes. I shudder to think what this would have cost me down there.

Anyhow.. My wife has now committed to only buying the easy open tins from now on as she loves my barbequed salmon burgers and really missed them last night...

Disney is releasing Loki, Wandavision and The Mandalorian on disc.

I'm officially speechless.

Looks like Disney needs to make a profit from these shows, so, lo and behold, they had to turn to releasing them on disc after all; D+ is not the cash cow that they thought it would be.

Why not release all three seasons of The Mandalorian. Why just 1 and 2?

Has anyone else found this website to be painfully slow these past couple of days? It's like reliving 1995's internet, but only when I visit this place. No issues at any other website.

They'll probably release it when S4 starts streaming, like it's mostly done with TV shows.
The Boys has a similar pattern.

By the way, didn't you say we were delusional for thinking The Mandalorian would ever come to disc when Iger said they were looking at other sources of revenue ?

Yes, the site is working terrible for me today.

Must be all that extra traffic for the announcement of all these Disney discs.

Been binging Columbo 4K SDR on Peacock since Saturday. Columbo rules and these 4K SDR episodes look terrific.
