I totally forgot about the announcement. I just woke up from a nap (Smiles of a Summer Night was funny and interesting those first 45 minutes, but I've been up early shoveling snow, and it's a vacation day) and checked Twitter for other things and was reminded. Normally they're announced around this time for the late announcements.

Does Criterion not have a deal with Paramount? Pretty sure If..., Days of Heaven etc. came from Paramount.

This leads me to believe that it is certainly under favorable negotiations.

I have been told that it will be released "sometime this year."

I know this news is hardly news at all, but at least WB is acknowledging it as being on the horizon, and we now have it from two sources, the studio and the Malick camp.

Licensing agreements frequently have a "use it or lose it" clause that will negate said agreement if the product isn't released. I'm sure that period includes a reasonable period for preparation when it comes to actually producing a product.

it's prob because Criterion didn't give out press releases yet since they are doing them early, so they can't tease us with knowing something before us.

He tweeted a couple of trailers this morning on his own account, but I don't know if they are related. If anything, I imagine he might be at work or something like that, and therefore unable to drop hints.

Except in the many cases where Criterion hunts down the best available prints then culls together what they feel is the best looking new "master". You can't put a deadline on something like that.

If its a newer film like Badlands, that's different. But again, there's no telling what obstacles/print anomalies/etc you run into with any older film, so again, you really can't put dates on something.

It's been a day of bad news for me. First my car wouldn't start then Coachella sells out...hoping for some good news from Criterion to cheer me up a bit.
