Today is my first day back at work after an extended vacation.. putting on the monkey suit this morning was interesting as I apparently gained 15 lbs in 2 weeks - mostly poutine, smoked meat and beer from Quebec micro breweries lol...

Anyways.. my last act of defiance was to stay up late and watch my imported copy of HAUTE TENSION that arrived while I was gone. My daughter has been mangling the French language since we got back in trying to stay in vacation mode as long a possible..lol..

Anyways, I only found out after shipping that the title didn't have English titles. I generally never watch English dubs, but have on occasion, made an exception for horror titles as it often adds to the "campy" nature of the movie...

If you've seen it, you know that HAUTE TENSION is the furthest thing from "camp"... so I was pleasantly surprised to find out that my ZIDOO, automagically downloaded the English subs for me when I added the rip to the database...

The movie is a cracker, the new 4K presentation is awesome, and the tech really saved the day! We really are in a golden age of home presentation for film!

High Tension review -

"...but clever viewers will be able to see for themselves that the movie's plot has a hole that is not only large enough to drive a truck through, but in fact does have a truck driven right through it." -Roger Ebert

Having seen it remembering this review makes me laugh every time.
I liked the movie but it's not exactly good in a traditional sense.

I also have a Zidoo Z9X and 40TB NAS but I put the whole kit in storage a while back. Maybe I'll look back into it someday. It has or had a bug with PCM channels being mapped incorrectly that really bothered me maybe they fixed that. I went back to just watching discs as intended. I think all the energy use of the NAS units was the main thing that turned me off and the 40Tb of space I had was also getting full so I was due to expand and just put it all away for a while. It's a nice system though and I'm glad it came though for you in that special case.

I absolutely love, and seriously miss, Ebert's take on movies but it's impossible to argue, or even discuss, that take without spoiling the movie..

As far as the ZIDOO is concerned, it has many flaws that end-users expecting the box to live up to its advertised features have a legitimate right to complain about... but for my purposes, it has been amazing... for flawless playback of full 1:1 UHD rips with DV/ full but rate ATMOS, it runs circles around my NVIDIA SHIELDS.

Going back to dealing with discs is not an option for me and I can definitely see how uneven streaming quality can be, even as I find myself using it more and more frequently...

25% hike is quite a bit. Are you getting anything extra with it or just paying more?

The bundle is Disney+, Espn+, and Hulu. All ad-free. It looks like it's just the company raising prices, because everything else keeps going up in prices.

Those that have the Live TV bundles are in for $7-$8 price increases if memory serves.

This is pretty dire to be honest. There was only 2 disc distributors. Now there is one. Who knows what this means for the future but it's not good.

They're also getting out of music, not just movies.

I guess this is why Walmart was looking to buy SDS distribution, because isn't Ingram who they use? or is it Alliance?

Crazy that they are getting out of music too. I know it's just anecdotal but my local vinyl shops are also packed with people buying records at $50 a pop. If the money isn't there for them to continue, that's pretty scary.

I always see a price hike as invitation to cancel.

Netflix pioneered the concept of raising prices while removing content. It will take a while for zombies to notice but eventually even the numbest skulls will see it's a bad deal.

Source of the info that there were only 2 disc distributors ?

Worry is like a rocking chair. Gives you something to do but doesn't get you anywhere. Nothing in life is worth the price of worry.

Use that energy to get them while you can. I already have a good collection and if that day ever comes when all the new content has to be online I will only value my own library all the more.

New Disney price plan for November in U.K. keeps the same £7.99 for the standard no ads plan BUT removes the 4K!
The 4K will be reserved for the premium no ads package costing £10.99.

Thanks, but no thanks.

Only Apple (in U.K.) offers high quality 4K without charge now.

That was according to Diabolik. They said it was Ingrim and Alliance and now that there is just one.

With just one distributor, Alliance can demand whatever price they want. Take it or leave it.

Hopefully these boutique labels and retailers can come up with a solution but it sounds like really bad news.
