YouTube and now Tik Tok offering tv apps. It was always the assumption that older audiences would stick with smart tv streaming and gen Z would consume content mostly on smartphones. It now seems these short videos are being targeted towards the smart tv. What’s more, 1 minute videos are seen as too long, with 15-30 second videos ideal for advertisers and product placement.

Like I said with last week’s linked article, Youtube staff and some long form Creators are scared shorts will kill off the longer short form videos (10-15 minutes) in favour of the (up to) 1 minute shorts. This is not made up, this is genuine concerns from folk who earn their living via the format.

Does that not raise alarms with you guys? 15 minute videos are now seen as too long.

What’s more, outside of enthusiasts like ourselves, for many, tv is just background noise. In that case, what’s the difference between a never ending algorithm of short form videos to a tv show or streaming series as background noise?

The answer is: Nope with a capital NOPE.

VerizonGo had a plan for short form.

The other odd thing is that anyone interested in these movies likely already owns many, if not most, of them on blu-ray. If this had been a 4K set at least some of us might have been tempted to buy the thing for the upgrades, but as it is it does not offer anything remotely compelling...at least to me. I'm certainly not feeling that funky packaging, either. I can already imagine what shape it would arrive in after Amazon shipped it in one of their bags, too.

I might look good in that hat, though.

Valid points but tik tok and YouTube have BILLIONS of viewers. Also, Youtube has become very popular with smart tv owners. The very same service that is now focussed on very short form tik tok length video for ad revenue.

Youtube did not kill interest in long form content even with its

and that is after 18 full years of their existence. Tik Tok won't, either.

If your job was to write scary "what if" screenplays, you'd starve. Nothing that you worry about ever registers even a tremor on my anxiety meter.

All I can think about is whether or not that hat is worth the MSRP of $1500 and how would I pay for it? That's something worth worrying about right there!

My counter to that would be there was no built in and billion+ strong base of fans of 1 minute and less short videos in the times past. Nor was there the huge pull of ads and product placement within short videos.
Short video of the past was cartoons and Laurel and Hardy shorts. They had substance and allowed characters to shine even in the short time span. This new generation of shorts is all about trends, dares, crazes and crazy fast ways to capture attention in a few seconds.

A hugely different market to the shorts of old.

Cat videos would disagree with you. They have been around for what seems like furever.

These are best enjoyed with the volume cranked!

Note that this video is 7 years-old, too. It has been viewed 157 million times.

It even has a sequel:

Youtube at its best.

The price on the sets also insane. I think around 9/10ths of that set retails for under 15 dollars a film. Buying in that kind of bulk the set should have way better packaging and probably be closer to like 500 dollars given its probably a double dip for almost everyone. And ya the titles that have 4k release should have had the 4k thrown in instead of this outmoded release.

Some odds and ends to share:

[Show spoiler]I received my latest fashion accessory last week: my very own medical alert bracelet. I haven't worn anything on my wrist since retiring from the railroad and I keep thinking that I am wearing a watch again. Whenever I want to know what time it is, I find myself looking at this friggin' bracelet. I guess I can't unlearn my railroad conditioning.

Tomorrow I head back to St. Louis in order to attend the Amyloidosis support group at Washington University for the first time. Their schedule and mine have never aligned until now. I have never been to a support group before, so I don't really know what to expect.

Then on Friday I travel to St. Louis again for my seventh treatment in my drug trial. Hopefully, enduring these four hour sessions is buying me some time.

Lastly, I was visiting the Exoricst 4K thread and I learned that forum member gj217 is dying. See his post here: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...postcount=3697 There are so many kind and thoughtful people in this thread that I thought that may be you would like to show him the same support that you have so kindly shown to me.

If you guys only pay on Average $20 BD price which includes UHD, then that is all you will get. It cost the Studios a lot more to produce UHD, so the Studios will be selective and cut down on UHD!

There is no indication that any studio, or their licensees, are cutting down on 4K disc releases.

For someone as obsessed as you are with a product that you do not even buy, you would think that you would follow the new release announcements on this very website. There is a veritable cornucopia of titles forthcoming to 4K disc. You would know this if you expended any effort researching the subject, but you never do.

Regardless of the format of the discs, and regardless of me already having many of the titles included, the packaging would drive me insane.

It's neat from a gimmick standpoint, but book style packaging with the discs inside the pages/sleeves would just being annoying as ****. Anytime I get something in that style of packaging (which is usually due to there being little other choice with at least some aspect of what is included), I end up putting the discs in regular cases and printing up artwork or something.

I think it's more for the Disney crowd with plenty of money to spend and wants shelf candy, than the average person who buys physical media. Most of them will probably end up never putting any of these discs in their player (if they even have one) and just keep watching the movies on Disney+.

I'm surprised they're even putting Blu-rays in here instead of DVDs, maybe Disney just wants to convince the casual crowd that it's worth the money, because they included the "premium disc format".

Absolutely. I don't even like seeing that packaging. Did anyone think much about this ? Nightmare fuel.

I assumed it was UHD with the MSRP of $1500. This isn't to be used this is to put in some sort of shrine where it is supposed to become more valuable. I don't want to be anywhere near this thing.

I recommend they produce 100 of these at most and number them but I do feel bad for anyone who ends up having to care for this item.

Yes I've noticed YouTube is pushing these shorts onto people on their TV app. They never seem to get ads which is probably to further entice people. YouTube video creators get much lower ad revenue off of YouTube than conventional videos.

Have you seen this? It's wild. Checking this on TikTok it doesn't look like the uploaders even rotate the video on the phone to maximise screen use, so it's even smaller.

Yes, I read that article too. That goes against claims by some members that when many gen Z leave home and get their own place, they will buy a tv. I don’t think they will.

But watching films and scripted tv series in 3 minute chunks is the kind of shit that tells me there is no turning back now, I mean many shots will be out of frame also, etc.. a total lack of respect for the art form.

I just hope long form scripted stuff and big screens last for another couple of decades at least.

As for shorts on YouTube, I think they are eventually planning to put vertical ads at both sides of the short videos in future.

I can’t quite believe people are watching phone recorded content on widescreen TVs, how low can we swoop?
