As usual you forgot the higher quality Audio which is a very big deal.

You don't need the best display to see the difference in picture quality either. You can see the difference on a $100 computer monitor.

What if discs stopped being made? How would you celebrate?

Would the fact they still exist be a problem? I'm going to have mine forever and I have more than a few.

Disc will still be collectible years from now. Best Buy only had a single digit percentage of the market anyway. It just means Amazon and Walmart get a bigger percentage.

If Best Buy's decision is a bad sign for disc then streaming must really be in trouble with all the defunct streaming services:

They are basically forcing you to pay extra for the Steelbook of Barbie, if you want the Blu-ray with the 4K release.

This is nonsensical. Why would only disc quality depend on your equipment and not streaming? Also, did you see the video I posted earlier comparing Shazam versions where the iTunes version was worse than disc and worse than Max? iTunes is supposed to be the best digital version. I bet Max only looks as good as it does because it is a WB film, the same thing Netflix does with some of its originals. And for 35mm films with grain, forget it.

As I said, you can't guarantee that the quality you have will remain when you buy something digitally or stream. The trajectory has been that quality has been dropping on, for example, YouTube where bitrates have gone down. Disney+ 4k now only on a premium tier which wasn't the case before.

https://www.streamingmediablog.com/2...trates-4k.html
They save tens of millions of dollars on this. You can't have it both ways. If the average person does not care about quality (that DVD is still the top selling disc is a testament to this) then no way are the streamers going to prioritise quality.

I don't see why porting over bonus features from the Blu Rays or DVDs would be that expensive. Robert Meyer Burnett has spoken about this and he chalks it up to the people in charge not really knowing the film industry and not caring. They employ business majors etc.

I never checked the data for iTunes original content which others have stated was better than their movies. Some data I did earlier this year below. Included bandwidth just to show there was no problem between me and the CDN.

The world of streaming seems quite content with < 5 Mbps, Netflix September speed index here for the US.

[Show spoiler]

He thinks you need a 80,000 custom home theater to enjoy the benefits of a higher quality digital presentation.

Great gear is great but wired headphones and a good monitor will show the difference between physical media and streaming.

Why would ANYONE spend extra on electronics only to settle for a lesser version of the source material? I don't know.

I just imagine his joy when he discovers there's something better and it's been there all along.

I'm waiting for Vudu to decide it needs a few ad breaks for purchased content.

That will be an interesting day.

At which point alchav will chime in and say that watching 30 minutes of ads during a streaming movie is better than spending 2 minutes putting in a disc.

no, it's Alchev deciding to make a big deal about news that is well over a week old just after a post with the new announcement that Netflix is raising their basic plan by 20% and premium by 15%.

Yes you're right Subs has been adding some short Ads like Prime and Hulu. I've been watching Bosch:Legacy. Netflix will raise their rates, you just have to pick your Providers. Quality affects both Disc and Streaming, but the setup and Equipment has to be at the High End for the best Performance!

You’re basically lando making a deal with the empire when you’re a streamer. “This deals getting worse all the time”

The news that day happened to be about Netflix because that was the day Netflix made their announcement about raising prices. But since you brought up Amazon, Hulu and pick your subs together, let me drag up some not too old news
https://www.cnn.com/2023/09/22/media...ads/index.html

so not even a month ago amazon announced they will be adding ads in Jan to prime and if you don't want ads you can change to their "new" ad-free option (aka what you have now) for 20% more

and in August Disney announced a price increase that started a few days ago (Oct 12) for Hulu of 20%

I don't think anyone here will argue that better equipment won't give a better experience (though I know others that will disagree and say their SD TV with mono speaker lets them know what is happening so who cares. But even on such poor set-ups , l the lossy audio compression and huge array of artifacts from over squeezing the video can be perceived by some one that cares about AV.

ps as a side note I have no idea how your post was a response to my post,

What are your options, I've always said It's All Digital! You Stream from a Disc or you Stream from a Server, the Quality is getting like Disc maybe by tomorrow. Some say it's already here like with Sony Bravia Core Streaming at 80Mbps. You guys told me years ago to compare Disc to Streaming I needed better equipment, my Mitsubishi DLP would not cut it. Now you need higher end equipment, with low end equipment you don't know if it's the Stream or poor equipment!

After a disc has been released it can't be altered in any way. The studios can't insert advertisements, they can't lower the bitrate, they can't remove offensive scenes, and they can't charge customers any additional fees.

All of those things happen with streaming.
