Old news. From March 2022:

Why Are Streaming Churn Rates So High? Cost Is A Big Reason

Quote:
“In the United States, the average churn rate [when people cancel or both add and cancel a paid SVOD service] has remained consistent since 2020 at about 37% across all paid SVOD services,” notes Kevin Westcott, vice chair, Deloitte LLP and U.S. technology, media and telecom leader.
Quote:
Among younger people in the U.S., churn is even more common. Fifty-two percent of Millennials and 51% of Gen Z have canceled or added and canceled an SVOD service within the past six months. Westcott notes this reflects both their digital prowess and their lack of disposable income.

How long until Vudu or Apple start putting ad breaks in purchased movies and tv shows? I think prices are still best on used Blu-ray. I’m not getting screwed over when they decide to change or remove things.

I found this interesting from a AVS poster that said he had supposedly ad free tiers:

Unskippable ads for the service's own shows (aka "previews") - Paramount+, I'm looking at you.

I believe its just a matter of time till the “Cancel” radio button gets buried in a providers web site.

SirusXM says cancel online but it is not a selection, you have to start a chat on their site and get the rep to cancel your sub . Now to signup is just a 1,2,3 process.

They are 15 second trailers BEFORE the content starts. Once it starts - no ads if you have the premium tier. I know because I have Paramount+ with Showtime.

A fair amount of the time what you say is just gibberish. Like what are you even trying to say you own the car but not it’s designs you own your meds but not their contents. I really just don’t know what you’re even trying to say since almost nothing sells with all rights. Even my pure bred dog could have the same thing said about him since we bought the dog not future generations.

“The content is not yours” in a copyright sense. But you own the physical copy of the film. Meaning your access to it is irrevocable by the studios. Barring theft/loss or damage to the disc, it is yours in perpetuity.

With digital, your purchases can be (and often are) altered/replaced at any time… or even worse, deleted altogether. The providers have no obligation to continue providing access to your purchases as eventually, that storage and maintenance cost will prove prohibitive… and outside of iTunes, you generally cannot keep your own digital copies outside of mobile phone/tablet downloads.

These are the concerns disc supporters have.

We do not trust the studios to not make our purchases moot.

Even if it’s stolen lost or destroyed it’s still yours in perpetuity. You are allowed to have a back up for personal use just like cds it’s just the breaking encryption that became a catch 22 for our messed up legal system.

Has anyone ever been prosecuted for using software to backup physical media they own with no intent to distribute? If not, we must assume this is within fair use rights.

Last year in No. America alone, EST sales were $2.5 billion. Are the studios going to jeopardize that kind of money?

It's unlawful to RENT a DVD movie and copy it in order to create your own movie library. It’s also unlawful to BUY a DVD movie and make a copy of it for anyone else. It is LAWFUL, however, to make a copy of a DVD movie that you have purchased if that copy is to be used solely for your own personal use -- such as to make a backup.

I'm hosting a movie night tonight with the Meg 2.

I've built a nice home theater in a dedicated part of my otherwise unfinished basement. The system was nice 20 years ago but it's only been improved. Currently I have a 7.2.4 ATMOS sound system and a high end (over $10K) projector with a 2.40:1 screen (127").

What really helps me really relax and enjoy when hosting a movie is actually having the movie in hand. I have the disc. No need to get on a computer and call up another computer and show my ID and ask to watch a copy over the network if it's available. No need to rely on that network connection that is sometimes used by 20 other devices in my house. The fact it's the highest quality presentation is a bonus on top of the fact it's the most reliable.

I''m also thrilled my copy of The Others is due to be delivered today. I have owned the DVD and the previous Blu Ray and the review of this title makes it sound like it's been wonderfully remastered.

"The new 4K makeover that was prepared for this film is quite the revelation. Indeed, the cinematography emphasizes various types of shadows and shadow nuances that make the darker footage -- which is more than two-thirds of the film -- look quite spectacular because now depth is very impressive."

Sometimes watching a UHD BD is like seeing something for the first time because it is a better presentation than I have ever seen of the movie.

Different news. My link is saying "serial churners" have increased since 2019. I'm not sure what the differences between these classifications are, though.

From the previous discussion you must think this is exactly the same as ads in the middle of what you are watching.

Also one of the few Criterion 4ks to get a Studio Canal release in Europe.

If they thought it would make more money,... yes in a New York Minute.

I don't know how much Netflix makes but it's a streaming service that is somehow a for profit business.
Raising the prices is an invitation to cancel.
Are they willing to jeopardize the profit? Yes, because they think it will be profitable.

The money for the EST is ALREADY made and most likely spent. Imagine asking if they would like more money for something they already "sold" to someone who has been told they don't "own" it.

I own video games on Playstation that are no longer available on the store. Heck, many digital storefronts simply close like some of the Nintendo online shops.

Secretly they have new hardware with new stores and they want to sell you Donkey Kong but you have to pay AGAIN.

Tangentially related, but here is an article on what is happening with bandcamp. I have previously made a few digital purchases on there but always have felt uneasy because it's still a digital download. You can download them locally at least but that relies on backups and the like, something I am not very good with. Perhaps I should be putting more effort into that.

But even a company like this which was sustainable and fine can be sold off to vultures and destroyed, putting everything you bought at risk. A sad time for music also.

I believe your words were, “Trailers are ads. Period.” So that should have been, “They are 15 second ads BEFORE the content starts.” And they can not be skipped.
