I have watched MI: Dead Reckoning twice at home now and I still enjoy the heck out of it. Can’t wait to watch the lot over a week once part 2 hits in 2025.

Just finished watching Strange New Worlds S2 4K and The Warriors TC 4K disc sets. Stellar releases all around.

Apple now has The Abyss Special Edition 4K/DV/Atmos for $9.99, so went ahead and got that to kill some time until the March 4K disc releases.

I saw Society of the Snow and it was pretty great. Netflix did zero promotion for it and it was only playing in a handful of cinemas in London with maybe 1 showing a day, but I did manage to see one on New Year's Day. Probably will be buried along with everything else on Netflix, and it's a shame.

When everything is just put on the service with a level playing field, it really all does become "content." Studios in the past had the ability to elevate or bury a film (for better or worse) and with actual film lovers in charge they could see if they had something worth promoting.

Not any more I guess. At most you just have trailers on YouTube. That's another thing: people aren't exposed to trailers of films unless they seek them out when they don't go to the cinema. What ends up rising to the top is pre-existing IP.

I’m guessing that’s why they want actual Netflix stores, to promote content in a big way, especially IP, via merchandise and immersive gaming, etc..

I have both this and TOP GUN MAVERICK on ice. I've seen neither as of yet, because, as I get older, and my brain terns to mush, I feel the need to watch previous instalments of a movie in the run up to watching a new movie...

When I used to attend the cinema, I was the guy that would line up more than an hour before show time to ensure that I got the seat that was dead centre of the auditorium.. I used to LOVE the trailers- sometimes they were one of the best parts of the whole experience LOL..
I now avoid trailers like the plague, as I hate spoilers and pretty much prefer to go into everything cold.

I saw ALIVE on it's opening day and, as much as I'm skeptical of people claiming to remember exact details about their cinematic experiences from decades ago, I definitely remember that crash scene from that experience.

I can't wait to catch SOCIETY OF THE SNOW after it hits NETFLIX tomorrow. I know..I know what you're all thinking here...but I was actually quite impressed with the DV/ATMOS presentation of LEAVE THE WORLD BEHIND. I don't watch any legacy titles on NETFLIX as I know they look like ass...but I do belive that they somehow assign more bits to their first run feature movies and TV shows.

I too avoid trailers and can go into films just with positive word of mouth to support it. I saw May December blind. In fact, the BBFC title card was the first I realised about its content and what I was getting into. It's satisfying trying to figure out what is going on without prior information.

But I think most people aren't willing to take a chance. If you tell someone a film is good, they will ask what it's about before watching it. Or they want to see a trailer to gauge the film. For these audience members, exposure to trailers is a good thing, which is what they are missing.

Your set up is much more advanced than 99.99% of people including me, so your experience will probably be comparable. And you are probably right they assign more bits.

Really, I am thinking more in terms of legacy of their films. Their strategy really kills it. They are in the business of keeping engagement first and foremost, not making worthwhile films, and their approach shows this. In the past I think a film like this could be quite popular.

As for the film, I've seen Alive but I don't remember it very well. This certainly seems more authentic. The crash scene is harrowing here in any case.

So they want to sell all kinds of stuff from their movies but not the actual movies on disc ?

They just want to promote their content, I suspect they are only releasing theatrically to keep a number of creatives happy.

And for awards consideration. Oscar rules might be changing I've heard? Perhaps their theatrical distribution will have to be more extensive.

Have you seen Rebel Moon yet on Netflix? I can almost guarantee they moved the bandwith over to that film, because it looks and sounds phenomenal. That is also in 4K/DV/Atmos.

This year feels like a drought year.

Right now I'm looking forward to:
inside out 2
dead pool 3
sailor moon season 4
naruto shippuden set 2
digimon season 2 & movie

I feel like normally by this time of year I would be looking forward to 2 or 3 times this many releases.

It sounds like something I'll see with my daughter....once she brings it up...also, if I'm not mistaken, there is supposed to be a more expanded version of this to come later.

Default Netflix Viewing Declined By 17% in 2023

QUOTES

"Based on Netflix's own data, viewers spent over 7 billion hours less last year watching the platform than they did in 2022"

"That’s an almost 17% year-over-year decrease in audience engagement -- a far more significant chasm than what Next TV reported in June, when we crunched similar Netflix self-reported data and found a year-over-year viewing deficit of about 330 million hours, or 4%."

If I understand this chart correctly. In November of 2023 36.1% of people were streaming, 28.3% were watching Cable TV, 24.9% were watching free over the air ATSC television, and 10.7% were other. I am guessing that satellite TV and physical media like DVD, 2K Blu-ray, and 4K Blu-ray fall within the 10.7% category for TV watching.

No Stranger Things or Cobra Kai. Both would have hugely boosted viewing.

This has the mentality of being excited for something based on it being a pre-existing IP, which is how we got into the dire situation with what Hollywood makes to begin with. Don't worry, there will be plenty of good films that you haven't heard of yet.

You're complaining about the lack of the year's releases 3 days into the year?

Default Merchandising: Deep Discounts Portend Best Buy’s Disc Exodus

SELECT QUOTES

"For months, DVD and Blu-ray collectors have been dealing with the news that Best Buy was planning to exit the disc market in early 2024. Now that the new year has arrived, the chain has apparently stepped up efforts to carry out that plan."

"A Jan. 3 visit to a Best Buy location in Southern California found a sparsely populated new-release home video display, while a clerk was pulling titles from shelves in the DVD and Blu-ray section and loading them onto a cart."

"All signs point to the chain trying to sell off its remaining inventory. Best Buy’s website touted disc sales such as 4K movies for as low as $11.99, 4K Steelbooks starting at $22.99, and Blu-ray Disc movies for as low as $5.99."
