Did the Audyssey calibration yesterday (after putting in the new subwoofer the day before, crossover at 60, cutoff freq. at 90) and watched The Others with Nicole Kidman for the first time. Sounded lovely. Last edited by Warm Gun; 01-23-2024 at 12:20 PM. |

New Linklater film Hit Man has a June 2024 release. Another crying shame as it will be a film that should get a proper theatrical release and then disc release but instead will be buried on Netflix. They are an anti-movie company.

Don’t know why you believe the Android streaming is some big part of the TV, it is not. One example here and it probably has a lot more capability than your TV. Why do you insist on showing readers your lack of streaming knowledge by continuing to post this symmetrical crap? You are receiving data, you are sending very little data when streaming. What part about this simple concept are you not comprehending? |

So many great films it's like they hold them hostage on streaming. I'm still pissed that Squid Game has never come out on disc yet. That was a great series that deserved a disc release. Same with Cobra Kai (you can get it on DVD, but BD is region locked for Europe I guess). Even Disney has seen the writing on the wall that streaming is a losing game and released Mandalorian on disc. Anybody who doesn’t like Atmos it’s because they don’t set it up or calibrate it properly. Literally 100% of “Atmos is not worth it” clients I’ve had in the past decade have changed their minds after I’ve done their proper calibration.

Basically, most people should avoid ATMOS if their room requires significant deviations from the prescribed speaker placement... Even then, proper calibration is the other half of the equation. A couple of months ago, I recall coming across a rather well healed member of this forum who had an absolutely gorgeous looking room as evidenced by his gallery on the site. Unfortunately, it was rather obvious that his "professional installer" did not find money in the 10s of thousands that he must have spent on the room to properly setup his laundry list of expensive gear properly. ![]() |

With respect to upmixers for older titles, I used to use the same approach, with the exception of horror movies. I'm now on my 3rd ATMOS capable receiver. In the past, I would usually turn off all processing on non ATMOS titles. When I did use an upmixer, I would favour Dolby's solution over DTS's as I found it less "gimicky". The latter would seem to make odd choices for height speaker direction (dialogue leaking etc). A pleasantly unexpected benefit of my last upgrade to go 7.4.6 was the inclusion of a newer DTSX PRO upmixer. It seems someone over at DTS was listening as it has been awesome for me on legacy titles and even DD+ ATMOS titles. I pretty much leave it on all the time for anything that is not natively uncompressed ATMOS. I have never found it to be anything less than a net plus to my enjoyment of a movie! |

To be fair, it has less to do with how they're mixed in Atmos than you just having crappy room dimensions. If you had proper dimensions and calibration you would not be saying that Atmos sucks. |

I didn't say that Atmos sucks and would love for you to explain those choices in Coraline, Schindler's List and Black Hawk Down and what makes you pick Atmos mixes over the originals when watching older movies.

I don't own Coraline or Schindler's List on 4K disc. I do own Black Hawk Down and that was a demoworthy release all around. In fact, I just finished watching Blade Runner 4K disc in Atmos and it was another demo disc. I never felt that they were just making up stuff as to where to put certain effects just to be "showy." My system is 5.2.2. If there's an Atmos option I will generally gravitate towards that one, because I invested the money on the equipment and technology - I want my money's worth. I'll eventually get back to the original audio should it be included, but I prioritize Atmos/DTS X, etc. |

For those Black Hawk Down sounds to appear more in the Atmos speakers than in the surrounds means they were mapped incorrectly. I had them above the TV when I made that post. If the sand was as much in the back height channels, then the decoder should have known to send those sounds down more into my surrounds. I experienced that in Blade Runner. A flying car clumsily panning from the top into the surround (or the other way around) because I only had two speakers up there instead of the ideal four. But in Black Hawk Down's case, they obviously placed the sounds more in the front highs (since it did not fill my surrounds when the back was downmixed), for no logical reason. Quote:

My ISP experimented with different Fiber setups until they perfected the Fiber fed Switch with Ethernet Ports out for IPTV and Streaming. I haven't heard of any other ISP's with this type of setup, so until you experience this setup you shouldn't make any degrading remarks! |

Just checked that scene in Black Hawk Down again, to refresh my memory. Although I no longer have speakers up there, I can still test if sounds are in the front or back. The sand still blows into the surrounds in the Atmos mix, but the old 5.1 fills them more. The balance between front and back is reversed slightly in the Atmos. It shouldn't be up there anyway, considering where the camera is. I remember gunfire and helicopters being moved from back to front as well, but it's been a couple of years and it's getting late. Demo-worthy my butt. The mix that won the Academy Award should be the default.
