Well, you're my go to guys for all things HT.

Just watched "A Bugs Life" for the first time since I got the LCR and stands for the 10's, and it was like watching it for the first time audio wise.
Just when I thought it couldn't sound any better, it did. Amazing what a quality center and speaker stands can do to enhance the sound quality.

Filling those stands really did the trick; so thanks everyone for the help. I'll try to take some better photos later for the gallery. I'll let you know when I do.
I kept telling Seve to fill his stands he said well they are heavy alredy, I guess he was not in a rush, he knew it was gonna sound better but took you to buy some mass loading material for him to decide to go ahead

I understand your situation and don't forget about getting longer speaker cables cause once you fill those you wont feel like passing this wire inside the foot unless you only fill the front part and pass the wire in the back foot.

I think I will get sand for myself too as I used Cat litter missing some weight in there a bit.

Yeah, I am only going to fill the front leg with sand, and the run the wire down the back. I need to get longer wire runs before I get the sand because I don't want to do one without the other. That is the other reason I have been putting it off. I want to get some 10 foot runs of anticables, they are about $100 a pair.

thats a good price, are they terminated? or did you have to terminate them yourself?

These will have spades on them when they arrive. For $100, that will be a great price and the reviews have been phenominal on them.

Had to terminate myself those are not the BI-WIRE KIT which is like 500$ cause of terminations and a fancy mesh on top of 2 tresses, same wires. I have baught 2$ banana plugs and they work fantastic with the Tress.

im not tryin to be a smart@ss or anything, but if you use the great speaker wire and 2$ plugs to terminate them,,, isnt that kinda defeating the purpose?

Hey guys,

I don't have much knowledge when it comes to speakers and was hoping to get some opinions on which ones to buy for a 5.1 set up. I'm currently in Iraq and probably won't be buying anything for another month or so until I get home...just trying to do some early research. I plan on going to Best Buy Magnolia to hear some different brands when I get back. I've been reading this (Energy) and the Def Tech thread and was leaning towards either of those as they have been getting high praise on this site.

Anyway, my budget is about $1500 and I already have a Onkyo 607 receiver.
Can anybody recommend a 5.1 set up in both bookshelf and floorstanding varieties? I'm not sure which one I will go with until I move into my new apt when I get back and see what my space situation will be.

Thanks for any and all help!

Not at all I pay them 2$ but they are worth a whole lot more, and BTW I have noticed much improvement over the transparent copper cables. I just don't want to open another can of worms on cabling, I might change my Bananas later but i will be getting new interconnects and new gear first.

I would suggest that you look at the CF-50s for fronts, then CC-10 center channel. Look at the CB-5s for surrounds. Then ask BB to give you 10% off. Then for a subwoffer, buy it over the internet. go to http://www.edesignaudio.com and buy the A2-300 subwoofer for $415

go to monoprice.com for your wires and hdmi cables and subwoofer cable.

I won't recommend bookshelfs because in your case the CF-50s are small enough that they would take up the same space as the bookshelfs with the stands. But if you have to, get the CB-20s and some VTI UF-29 stands, stands can be bought at http://www.racksandstands.com for $130

hope you make it back from overseas, just fine. Are you from CA?

also look at this

Energy RC-30s $398/pr
Energy RC-LCR $369
Energy RC-R $234

Again, buy the eD A2-300 subwoofer and you will have a rockin system.

Hey callas...thanks for the reply and suggestions.

I was thinking about the bookshelfs only because I would probably end up in a small apartment or condo and thought towers might be too big/loud but I didn't really think about them being the same size as the bookshelfs with stands...good point. I have two tall entertainment shelves on both sides of the tv where I currently have two Klipsch B-2 bookshelf speakers...or I used to before I put everything in storage before deploying. Also have a C-1 center speaker.

I'm guessing that either bookshelfs on stands or a tower would be better soundwise than having a bookshelf sitting on an entertainment shelf?

I like your RC-30, RC-LCR, RC-R suggestion. Would I only need one RC-R for the surrounds or two of them? They look pretty big.

Also, what about buying three RC-LCRs and using them for L/R/C and the RC-R for surround, would that be pretty good as well? Those RC-LCRs look pretty cool.

Yeah, I'm from Cali...form a small city called Lompoc, it's about 45 mins north of Santa Barbara.

Do you think that subwoofer might be too big for an apartment? Would a 8" or maybe a 10" be better?

Thanks for the safe return comment....I should be home around the middle of March and then time to look for a place to live. I seriously wish I could buy or at least rent a house without any neighbors close by so I could really enjoy the HT system! lol Sucks trying to watch a movie decently loud and use the sub with neighbors above or below you. Thanks again for your help.

I know where Lompoc is, Im from Riverside.

Yes, bookshelfs speakers on stands would be better then on a bookshelf, they will have more space to breathe and open up. You will need 2 RC-Rs, one for the right and left surrounds speaker.

3 RC-LCR would be a great setup also, all matching speakers would be awesome and very seemless sounding.

Try this sub.

http://www.hsuresearch.com/products/stf-2.html

Its a very good 10" subwoofer. and has a great warranty, and produces a nice sound for the price.

Riverside is cool...I've been there a few times. I plan on going to the Best Buy in Oxnard when I get back to listen to some speakers. That's the closest one to where I live that has a Magnolia dept inside.

Do you know of any stands that can be used for the RC-LCR as well as for the RC-Rs? Are there any other surround speakers that you would recommend besides the RC-R?

for the RC-lcr use something like the VTI UF24 @ http://www.racksandstands.com, that will work for the L/R speaker, and put the center channel on the entertainment center under the TV,

The RC-Rs can be wall mounted behind the couch, they should come with the mounts, place them about 18"s above your head or on the side walls depending on your room design.
