That's where you guys are stuck with a Dated Disc Format. The assumption is just because you have a Disc you can play it on a Low End Player and Display, and get better Quality than Streaming! IMO that is far from the Truth!

A better source is a better source. Try thinking that through.

My parents watch on a cheap Blu-ray player and a 5 year old L.G smart tv and the quality beats the pants of Netflix, Amazon, Disney etc..

Respectfully, it depends on how you define source.

Over the most recent Christmas holidays, we watched THE FAMILY MAN (2000 Nic Cage) on Blu and LOVE ACTUALLY (2003) on UHD.

With the exception of a few presentations on SHUDDER, these looked worse than anything I've streamed over the last few years.

The Bluray of HEIST (2001 Gene Hackman) was one of the most disappointing releases I've ever owned as I kinda was hyped for it's release..

Of course we all know the specs and which one has the capacity to be better (and more often than not is).... but it's not always a given.

As an aside, I think it's a little funny how some of the diehards are going to die on this hill for the upcoming ALIENS disk... The transfer looks like a video game....no amount of extra breathing room is going to be able to fix that..LOL

I guess the moral is -Garbage in , HOT garbage out...

You have to compare apples to apples, title to title and format to format, such as the blu-ray of a specific title to the HD stream of that same title. Most of the time, the disc presentation will be superior to the streaming version. Exceptions can always be found, but exceptions are never the rule. Regardless, watching on a low-end TV or high-end one will not change the quality of the source itself despite what someone here seems to believe.

In the case of Aliens, the 4K stream and the 4K disc are derived from the same source, so if the source was crap then both will have problems. The criticism of Aliens 4K has been based entirely upon the streaming version as the 4K disc has not been seen by anyone yet, but seeing as they have the same pedigree they will have much in common, be that good or bad. If the source was good, the 4K disc should be better than the stream, if not the 4K disc could make the deficits even more obvious.

Maybe not, but it will still look better than the stream. Enough so, despite the ultra clean, added detail look, jaws will drop. These A.I flaws will be ironed out, that’s what the technology does, it learns as it goes.

It’s very telling to hear all the different noises about A.I relating to film. For streaming, it’s “We could take a 720p feed and A.I upscale to 4K to save data!”

For disc, it’s “ we could push 4K to 8K without all the expense and give people a reason to buy 8K tv sets and projectors”.

Same old streaming noise, all about savings and shavings!

Disc will always be king for quality A/V. No matter how much converts try to argue differently.

Good, bad or just different. I have yet to decide. Can’t wait to find out.

I don't much care for getting ready for these trips. Haven't even put my foot out the door and I'm already tired.

Apple Vision Pro + Disney+ is a delicious combo for now.

I drove to an Apple store and demo-ed the Apple Vision Pro and sadly out of everything is does the 3D movie clip from Super Mario World was the most disappointing thing they showed off. You can't extend the screen beyond a point so you are looking in a window in a simulated 3D environment that has more depth. Hopefully the hardware and software will improve. I'm convinced the software will get updates that help a lot.

That’s the field of vision. That will be a shortcoming on early generations of headset.

All these streamers have realised the real money is in games. They will need to get very clever about cross platform promotion and integration.

I’m out though, in terms of multiverse Fortnite style experiences. Having a screen take up only 1 quarter (if that) of a display is not my idea of immersion, even if you can throw popcorn and tomatoes at the screen. And gen Z players flying past me every two minutes would do my head in.

Not for me, despite being a big gamer.

The entertainment world is going to look a lot different in the next 15-20 years.

I have never played Fortnite. Fans of the game will likely enjoy it on AVP though. I think Minecraft is playable too.

I am a fan of Lara Croft so I'm considering buying this...

I have the old games on Steam but having them on PS5 would be nice.

In terms of the Apple Vision Pro was a lot of fun to have a demo at the Apple Store. The immersive experiences looked state of the art with the very high quality OLED display. Calibration seemed perfect so there's no distractions. My understanding is the Spatial videos they show are made by professionals and the Spatial videos users make at home don't have the same quality generally

Photos were amazing, Panarama photos were fun, Spatial videos were slick, but then the 3D movie clip was disappointing. I couldn't open the 3D movie window when there was clearly space to do so if I could. Being in a simulated 3D space (passthrough) made the 3D in the window kind of a non issue. Like those old 3D book covers or the 3D slip covers. It's 3D but generally you have to be trying to notice.

That said, My interest in the 3D movies on Disney+ caused me to go rewatch some of my 3DBDs. No need to simulate a big screen when I actually have one. Enjoyed Tangled and more recently Shark Night.

I would love to borrow (rent) an AVP for an upcoming plane ride though. Someone should work with the airlines on this because you would likely just need a handful at each airport and then they travel.

If anyone wants a nice bussiness idea and also can make this happen before next month, I'll be looking for you after security.

[Show spoiler]I have another diagnosis as a result of a skin biopsy performed on my left leg and thigh. It has been determined that I have Small Fiber Neuropathy and amyloid deposits were found in the Dermis layers of the skin. My new diagnosis is Hereditary Transthyretin-mediated Amyloidosis Peripheral Neuropathy (hATTR-PN) in addition to my earlier diagnosis of hATTR-CM (cardiomyopathy).

My having Small Fiber Neuropathy means that the density of small nerves in my body is too low. I have only one-third to one-half as many small fiber nerves in a given area as I should due to these amyloid deposits. The amyloid presence damages these small fiber nerves. This explains why I have random and varied sensations in my hands, forearms, feet, and calves typically in the form of moderate to severe pain, spasms, tingling, cramps, and numbness.

This new diagnosis will not change my primary treatment, it is just further proof that my disease is late stage and that my full nervous system is compromised. The focus of my treatment remains on my heart. hATTR-CM is a multisystemic and fatal disease. The main plan remains to monitor my decline until I am sick enough to be placed on the heart transplant list.

I return to St. Louis tomorrow for another 4 hour long infusion treatment with the drug Patisiran. Just a refresher: Patisiran is a gene silencer that interferes with the production of the protein transthyretin (TTR). Due to a genetic fault, my TTR is unstable and reforms into amyloid fibrils. These amyloid fibrils are deposited throughout my body doing their deadliest damage to my heart.

On the 21st I begin the first of three procedures to address the severe pain in the lumbar region of my spine. This is purely a quality of life concern. I am having a Lumbar Medial Back Block (LMBB) done.

In a LMBB, the doctor will use fluoroscopy to guide a needle into the most painful part of my lumbar spine: the L5-S1 vertebrae pair in my case. When the needle is in place a pain killer will be injected to see if it relieves the worst of my pain. The relief only lasts a few hours if it happens at all. The procedure aims to pinpoint the precise location of the worst of my pain.

If successful, another LMBB will be done about two to three weeks later to confirm the results.

If the second LMBB is successful, then in another two to three weeks I will undergo a Radio Frequency Neuroablation. This time the needle will return to the confirmed source of my pain and the nerves responsible will be destroyed by sending radio frequencies via the needle which in turn kills the nerve from the resulting heat. This is supposed to provide pain relief for a few months to a year until the nerves regenerate. If very lucky, the nerves won't regenerate at all and the pain does not return.

None of this does anything about the underlying causes of the pain; it simply kills the nerve that transmits the pain to the brain. It would require risky surgical intervention to attempt to address the causes and my doctor recommends this approach instead.

I have 11 doctors now. I never foresaw a time where this would happen. They put me through a lot.
Continue to wish you the best and the strength to keep enduring. I hope the treatment provides you pain relief and improves your quality of life.

I watched the 1986 horror comedy thriller Trick or Treat last night via Screambox though Amazon Prime. There's a 7-day free trial for it. It's taken from the upcoming 4K disc restoration and it looked phenomenal for a streaming version. Synapse is supposedly releasing this at some point this year. I will deifnitely be purchasing once it gets release. "Sammi Curr Lives!

Had never watched it before. Been seeing clips on YT recently and noticed that the streaming version was sourced from 4K, so it was a no-brainer. There's no doubt that Synapse will release it in some sort of bundle, which I will get in some form or another.

I actually haven't seen this since I saw it in theaters on release when I was.... 12?!?! I guess my parents were cooler than I thought. Enjoyed it at the time and sure I would get a kick out of it now.
