I can usually buy a Blu-ray or DVD used for that price.
$4 for a 4K HDR digital rental is acceptable I think. If it's HD-only I'll think twice unless it's some exceptionally obscure or rare arthouse fare I can't legally watch any other way, such as on Mubi or the Criterion Channel.

Good in a way. The less they care about quality the easier it is to ignore their films. I just hope they don't continue to buy up festivals films like Hit Man.
Things change by the year, one year they are all in on theatrical style movies, the next it’s small budget tv movies. Next year, we will probably be back to theatrical when 2025 rebounds after a weak 2024.

Pinch of salt.

True it can always change. Not sure it is changing that quickly though. They never really released movies theatrically either, so the question is why spend that much on a film they have no chance recouping with ticket sales? I am more talking about their focus on hiring "prestigious" directors since it's those I am more interested in anyway. I couldn't care less about Grey Man etc.

I mean, Netflix already signed a bunch of directors and paid for some IPs that suggest they will still dabble in the big budget arena.

That poster must have been under a rock to now post here about Best Buy and the disc business. Best Buy hasn't been seriously in the disc business for many years. The same for Target.

Other than Dune Pt. 2 and Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Pt. 2 is there any other tent pole releases on the horizon? IMO, the studios are too focused on streaming and with little focus on theatrical releases. And that is not good for the disc business.

Furiosa. Rest of those kinds of films are a wait and see for me. Civil War I will watch but that's a smaller budget. But there is also the Fall Guy, Godzilla, Planet of the Apes, Deadpool.

We have Mad Max spin off Furiosa, a new Planet Of The Apes film, Deadpool 3, a new Alien film, Joker 2, Beetlejuice 2, Wicked (should be this years surprise hit), Sonic 3, Godzilla/Kong (as mentioned above) and a new live action Lion Ling sequel.

2025 is huge. MI:8, Superman Legacy, Avatar 3, The Batman 2, The Conjuring 4, Fantastic 4, Megan 2.0, Captain America, Minecraft, Paddington 3, a Jordan Peele mystery blockbuster and many more.

The gap in schedules is due to the strike, many films were pushed back.

I know what you mean. I don't care to watch most of those. But there still are constant releases that are original stories. I've seen maybe 15 films in the cinema this year and none were sequels.

Cinema will be just fine, it will be back in double figures in 2025, with four or five films breaking the 1 billion threshold.

There are always people like yourself declaring the death of theatrical. And those people are always wrong. Be it WW2, tv at home, VHS, DVD, streaming, or a pandemic.

Very true. If I had a pound for every news article (or person) I've ever come across claiming that film is dying, or the death of CD's, vinyl, DVD/Blu-ray's, etc., my name would be in the Sunday Times rich list.

I don't think they meant that cinema is dead in terms of box office, but artistically. I don't agree with that either but that list doesn't inspire hope. It is deliberately formed as IP blockbusters though.

The problem with declaring cinema is dead in the other sense is that usually, the same people making that claim are the ones who “wait for the stream” when a good movie presents itself at the cinema. Apparently, only conic book and franchise movies are made, but when a unique film is introduced, people stay away. It’s self defeating. Loads of great films out there.

Old news, new movies released by streamers, not getting a disc release is old news.

IMHO, we the home theater enthusiast, have always been a very small minority. DVD became a great success in that John Q Public starting buying and collecting movies and TV on disc. Well that era is over and we are back to being a small minority. But there is money to be made from disc so we will continue to see disc made available.

Look how long LaserDisc survived and it catered to very small minority. JVC’s D-VHS D-Theater audience was much smaller than LaserDisc and yet there were several big titles released on that format. Some have not made it Blu-ray yet.

Article here.

It was estimated that in 1998, LaserDisc players were in approximately 2% of U.S. households (roughly two million).[17] By comparison, in 1999, players were in 10% of Japanese households.[18] A total of 16.8 million LaserDisc players were sold worldwide, of which 9.5 million were sold by Pioneer.[1][2][15]

I still remember during the laserdisc era, there were a lot more LaserDisc rental stores than VHS and Betamax rental stores combined in Indonesia. I miss those days. I miss especially the ability to be able to plop a disc in and just watch the movie without the need going to menu, settings, etc.

There is no technical reason with DVD/BD/UHD they can’t do that. After all, we already set the language, subtitle language, etc on the players. They should just let us watch the movie right away and then of we want to change something, we’ll choose from the setup menu.
