I have close to 1000 recordings of CBS, PBS and other programs. Have a list of all of them in paper form and PDF form. These can be played by the UHD Blu-ray players and the media players. The advantage of the media player, it remembers where I stopped if I could not complete a viewing of any given program. When viewing is completed it will be marked as “Viewed”. Of course I can do this as well on the printout.

If viewing is not completed and later returned to the media players will ask “Resume” or “Start Over”. The Blu-ray players do not do that. The Oppo does remember the directory from which the last file was played from but not the file its self. On the media players I can mark my directories as “Favorite” which makes getting to “\\DS420j\PBS-1-2\Video PBS Disk 1\MPEG-2\Desert Speaks” easier.

Is it really that hard for people to remember where they left off? I have never needed any device to tell me where to resume watching.

Our memory is like a muscle; it needs to be exercised. Use it or lose it applies here.

It would probably go a long way towards smoothing over some of the misunderstandings...

I wish it were that simple... multiple concussions from hockey, rugby and a bad car accident have rendered me a moron if you consider intelligence to be a function of memory

I had the privilege of visiting one of our fellow forum member's amazing home theater, so it's definitely doable. He can confirm that I'm housebroken and everything, too.

I wasn't even aware there was a Vol. 1, so thanks for the heads-up. I love the Warner Bros. and MGM cartoons, and so far I have the 3 volumes of the Tex Avery Screwball Classics and the Popeye collection on blu-ray. We just now want the complete uncensored Tom & Jerry collection - we have Vol. 1 up to now but nothing else. At the very least, we need the entire Fred Quimby produced cartoons on blu-ray.

well since I have more than one display I have more than one player at home. So even if one of them brakes I can continue watching a minute or two later. on the other hand what happens when the server brakes? can you re-build one as fast?

there is a time when it might be impossible to find a new 4k player and it might be "difficult" to find a 4k player. But the issue with that argument is you can go to e-bay (and other places that have used stuff people are looking at getting rid of stuff) and find used VHS, LD, 8-track, phonographs.... it will never be truly difficult, at most it might just take a few days to get it to your home.

IMO it will always be easier and cheaper to replace a 4k player than a home server that houses your 4k backups.

Also, consider that USB size drives will eventually be able to store 1000s of movies. Within a couple of decades, it could be feasible to carry around your entire movie collection.
IMO your future is gross. Don't get me wrong in theory a whole collection in my pocket sounds good. BUT 1000 films is a small number compared to what I own (and especially hope to own by that time) and 1000*100GB (OK not all UHDBDs are 100GB but again hoping for a better future)=100TB.

You want a craptacular fake 4k that fits a small collection in your pocket I want an amazing looking and sounding future with a collection that would make that impossible.

even though I agree with Vilya (for me next level is most likely 8k and less compressed...)

I can understand if what some people are looking for is to not have to walk to the other end of the house where the films are located to watch a film in the room they are in at the time.

I can understand if some find it easier to type in a full title compared to a well organized film collection.

I can understand if some would rather click a "random selection" button instead of thinking for a second "what do I feel like watching right now".

I can understand if for someone else it is being able to put 1000 films that are 10GB each in their pocket to bring them with them.

We are all different and what we are looking for for next level is also different.

For many years I looked at HH:MM:SS:FF (SMPTE time code) that was used on all devices. Some EDL’s could have > 300 edits with the master TC (Time Code) I/O (In and Out) listed along with the source TC I/O’s, Master/Slave TC I/O’s. Never saw a reason to try and remember any TC number, that was the job of the computer editing system. I appreciate the fact that if I have to stop Nova: Why Ships Sink at 24:11:09 and resume 3 days later my device keeps that info. Makes me

Actually my memory has some trouble remembering all of those icons, settings, keys in:

BaseCamp
Cool Edit (audio editor)
Corel Draw
Corel Photo
DVBViewer
Excel
IrScrutinizer
Leawo
Mac Mini (Apple Computer)
MakeMKV
Movie Collector
Music Collector
Quattro
REW (Room Eq Wizard)
True Audio (RTA)
TSReader (Transport Stream Analyzer)
URC Complete Control Program (Remote Control)
VideoReDo (video editor)
Visual CADD
Windows 10
Windows XP
Word
WordPerfect Presentations
WordPerfect

Then there is all the hardware in the home theater with numerous settings that must be set properly. Remember what you said sometime back when I showed you just one Scene setting in my AVP (below)?
