I currently own the Director's Cut and it's infinitely better than the Theatrical Version. The Ultimate Cut has Tales of the Dark Freighter spliced throughout the narrative in addition to additional commentary from side characters.

As far as which one, I'd base it on how much you liked the graphic novel.

I know I'm keeping my Director's Cut even after I get the Ultimate Cut.

I am keeping all of my cuts, but doesn't this UCE box have an even longer version? I hope so because there were too many unanswered questions especially regarding the youth of Doctor Manhattan.

It does, but the only addition is the inclusion of TALES OF THE BLACK FREIGHTER, and a few additional scenes that transition from the animated footage back to live action (most of it as the newsstand dealing with characters mostly cut from the DC).

Well, it could also depend on how much bass you like in your movie. In the DC you have a deafening BOOM! when The Comedian's door is kicked in, which is a nice wake up for people settled in watching television with Blake. In the UC there is practically no bass. In fact, when I first watched it, I felt something was off about the opening scene. Then I picked up the case and noticed that they went from DTS-HDMA on the DC to Dolby Digital TrueHD on the UC. I couldn't believe it! So, whenever I'm alone, I watch the UC, but when I'm wanting to impress folks, I shock 'em with the aggressive sound mix of the DC!

You're referring to the ultimate cut in comparison to the DC right? because i'm almost 100% sure this contains the ultimate cut from the previous (now OOP) release..

There shouldn't be any difference; are you sure you don't have a "midnight mode" that activates automatically with TrueHD? My Onkyo 805 does that and I have to turn it off every single time I watch a disc with TrueHD.

Well, the common belief is that DTS-HDMA and Dolby Digital TrueHD sound exactly the same, but I do indeed hear a difference in a few cases. This being one of them. I don't believe it's my set up, because I have a few DD True HD BDs that certainly bring the noise. I just didn't hear in the UC what I heard in the DC. There have been a few times where I've disagreed with a reviewer (and given time, I'm sure you will, too); sometimes I thought the PQ was great/poor, where they thought the opposite (I have a 55" Samsung LED6000 HDTV). Sometimes I thought the sound was worse/better than what the reviewer had heard (on my Denon AVR-2309CI 7.1 Hi-Def Receiver). I don't know what the deal is, I just know that when I watch the UC, no matter what adjustments I make on my receiver, the bass just isn't as powerful as it is with the DC. Maybe at your houses it is, but not in The Den. Perhaps at some point I'll look into this "midnight mode" on my receiver Varmintx is typing about, but, like I've already typed, my other DD TrueHD BDs don't sound so L(i)FE-less. However I really doubt this is the case. So, until then, I stand behind my original statement that the DC has more "oomph!" in its soundtrack when comparing the two.

Once you volume match, the same audio mix will be identical on both DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD. The TrueHD on my UK Director's Cut sounds just as good as the DTS-HD on the U.S. version.

When I watch this alone, I go with the Ultimate Cut because I really love the graphic novel and I feel the added animated scenes make it a better adaptation. That being said however, I usually go with the DC when watching with other people, unless they read the comic.

I loved the film having read only read a little bit of it. I don't like reading very much, though. My interest in comic book movies probably influenced my interest in this film.

Don't get me wrong as a former comic collector and a current blu-ray collector I'm totally in for this set but is their a version of the film that has a ending that actually works? As in the human race is united and doesn't end in a situation that would cause all the other nations of the world to say America brought this on itself and the rest of the world let swipe them off the globe while they are recovering from Doctor Manhattan's attack.

Same here. But then I watched the DC and it blew me away. Maybe I wasn't paying enough attention on first viewing, 'cos surely the TC can't be that bad.

Yep I can confirm that! Watched my new UK DC steel last night and the sound is just as in your face as my US DC. I was worried about annoying the neighbours too much . PQ was excellent, its supposed to be a little bit better than the US one? Its probably not the very best Ive seen but its very close.

Be quiet. You're ruining one of my favorite comic adaptations.

On the real, it's the biggest flaw of the film. The squid would've worked just fine.

All in all it is a good adaption, and I am not one to mind changes to the story, just always felt that this particular change didn't work and I somewhat hoped there was like a workprint out there that had a different ending that I never heard of.
