I started with the Platinum set and I'm now waiting for the postman/woman to deliver the Japanese blu-ray set.

The LD sets must of been expensive, but a very nice package that would be the pride in any Evangelion collection.

These days, it's not so much the cost of the discs themselves (which are very cheap on the Japanese secondary market) but rather the cost of shipping them across the Pacific.

The 14 TV volumes each weigh about a pound apiece, and the Theatrical Edition box weighs about 11 pounds by itself due to all the swag it contains (pictured below) along with the 4 discs. So in the end you're looking at shipping about 25 pounds / 10 kilograms, which costs a considerable amount even if using "slow boat" shipping.

Even the Wu-Tang Clan gets that one right.

Do you know if the VHS Limited box I have would have been the same price or cheaper as the LD set? Since I have both I wonder which one costs more new but I don't think I've ever ran across it in anything I've seen.

The VHS box currently is slightly cheaper than the LD box on the Japanese secondary market, but really no one these days buys it to watch the actual tapes/discs inside as they've been completely eclipsed in PQ by the later DVD/BD releases. In reality people buy it for the packaging (i.e. shelf appeal), the included swag, and/or nostalgia. Either way potential Stateside buyers are still looking at the exact same weight-related problems getting it shipped. It might be a couple of pounds lighter due to having 2 VHS tapes instead of 4 LDs, but still the cost difference between shipping 9 pounds instead of 11 isn't much.

As for the pricing back in Dec. 1998 when it was new, it was ¥23000 for the VHS set vs ¥25000 for the LDs. Makes sense when you consider that the swag included for both formats was identical. In comparison, the price difference between the VHS and LD copies of the TV series was ¥500/volume (¥5300 vs ¥5800), or ¥7000 for the entire 14-volume series.

Okay, so I lied. I just got around to actually ripping and actually watching EoE. It's great. Best $250 I've ever spent.

Ripping the audio (Eng, Jap, Eng Commentary) and sub tracks from the Platinum DVDs turned out well, easy to sync up. The actual subtitles though look poor, may need to take a look at redoing them.

I actually spent a really long time making sure that my subs looked nice. So that part is done. Timing the subs is not too bad, just had to shift a few ups by seconds and such. EoE is going to be a pain though. As someone mentioned before, the timing is off in all sorts of directions from what I already had. I'm kind of hoping someone's already done it

Why would you rip the Japanese audio from the Platinum release when there are two superior PCM tracks on-disc?

My copy should arrive today, having been scheduled to arrive on Saturday. I hope they don't pull a DHL and needlessly delay it yet another day for absolutely no reason because it's the afternoon and no sight of it yet .

Unfortunately, the DHL guys in my area are somewhat less than reliable. One time s/he just dumped my package in my yard and forged my signature...

Ease. we've already established that I'm far more interested in the dub track, so as something that I'll be unlikely to listen to anyway I took the easy option - rip the JP track off the DVDs which is already synced to the subs, rather than having to take the time to sync them back up again.

If there's a decent fan sub released then I'll just remux the BD audio track back in but for now, the sub track isn't great anyway, which largely makes the JP track a much lower priority for me.

That's illegal and should be reported to the police. They clearly stole your identity.

S/he forged my signature on the delivery confirmation form, so it's really not worth doing anything about considering that I did receive the item, albeit in an inconvenient location on my property.

Unfortunately it's standard operating practice for lazy delivery drivers these days...

Now that the both sets have been out for almost a week, they've appeared in full on private trackers. No BDInfo scans yet, but I can at least give the file sizes (rounded to within 0.1 GB)...

Episode 21' - 8.5 GB
Episode 22' - 8.3 GB
Episode 23' - 7.7 GB
Episode 24' - 8.0 GB
(Note that the "Director's Cut" versions of Episodes 21' - 24' each had different run times.)

Disc 1 (Ep 1-6) 45.1 GB
Disc 2 (Ep 7-12) 45.1 GB
Disc 3 (Ep 13-18) 45.1 GB
Disc 4 (Ep 19-22, 21'-22') 44.7 GB
Disc 5 (Ep 23-26, 23'-24') 44.4 GB
Disc 6 (Death & Rebirth) 32.2 GB
Disc 7 (The End of Evangelion + bonus features) 29.0 GB
Disc 8 (Revival of Evangelion) 44.6 GB
Disc 9 (Bonus features) 46.4 GB
Disc 10 (Full-episode AR Rush Videos) 43.8 GB

Total size: 420.8 GB (!)

Archives of Evangelion DVD Box stats:

Episode size (1-26) - 1.6 GB each

Disc 1 (Ep. 1-4) 6.3 GB
Disc 2 (Ep. 5-8) 6.3 GB
Disc 3 (Ep. 9-12) 6.3 GB
Disc 4 (Ep. 13-16) 6.3 GB
Disc 5 (Ep. 17-20) 6.3 GB

Not to long we hope! I've got the Japanese set myself and already know what's going on when watching without English subtitles, at least for the TV series and not the movies.

This is really shitty and just shouldn’t happen. Won’t be pleased if I have to return my set as soon as it reaches me because they can’t get packaging right. Anyone here with the set experience the same problems?
I'm afraid of taking the box out of its foam sleeve

Should I take the risk?

Disc 6 with the Death & Rebirth episodes look very plain. Through some of the reels you can clearly see railroad tracks on the right side! It doesn't look like any type of remastering was done for it. However, disc 7 & 8 look very nice and the difference is very clear when compared to disc 6.

That LD set looks awesome! This can be a very expensive addiction.

One more thing......

Was disappointed that there wasn't any comprehensive making-off, the booklet is great but it's not the same.

That End of Eva LaserDisc box set uses one of the best pieces of Evangelion-related art as its cover. It's just beautiful.
