I've never seen the 2nd or 3rd one.

Always heard the 2nd one really sucked and the 3rd one is just okay.

...is that wrong?

The 3rd one is great imo.

The 2nd one on the other hand is so bad that it's good.

It's a bad movie but it's not completely terrible imo.

It's just weird...

Very, very weird and trippy in places.

It's like everyone that worked on the movie were dropping acid or something when they made it.

I'd say that's a pretty accurate simplification of the general consensus. The Heretic was heavily panned upon release and the third one has a 55% rating on Rotten Tomatoes which is nothing to write home about. Having said that, they both have a following of sorts and I'd say they're worth checking out. They're interesting sequels and I can think of few trilogies as diverse as the Exorcist trio (I gave up halfway through The Beginning).

I'm glad I didn't.

I strive to be original whenever possible.

PS...is that the single scariest frame in movie history?

So does Richard Burton look like he's piss drunk and collecting a check in every scene?

How would you compare the third one to the original in terms of tone, style, story etc.?

...not as brilliant, but still great?

...or just as good?

In answer to your 1st question:

Yup pretty much.

In answer to your 2nd question:

The 3rd movie's tone, style and story are great and it's genuinely creepy and even downright scary in places and it's a great follow up to the 1st movie.

The 3rd one isn't a classic like the 1st movie but it's still pretty solid and definitely one of the better sequels out there especially in the horror genre.

I assume that is pretty much true. I found The Exorcist to be rather frightening while the other two very entertaining. Frankenstein and The Phantom of the Opera are both great movies in their own right.

The original film is a 2K transfer. The 4K version that Friedkin was bragging about on Twitter has yet to see the light.

Exorcist 2&3 are airing on IFC HD today and Sunday.
Currently watching 2. If this presentation is indicative of what to expect for the blu-ray, it'll probably get 3/5 for PQ, closer to 2.5. Nothing stellar, and probably could have had better results, but all things considered, expectations have to be tempered.

Watching now, doubt they are going with the new HD transfers and broadcast quality really varies in the end. This is me just being as optimistic as possible, though

The original is 4k my friend. Go to the 4k transfers thread on this site and you'll see for yourself. Warner's did a 4k scan from the OCN. Look it up bud.

That's not true and it wasn't the first time Friedkin has misspoken.

The current transfer is from the OCN and 4K as mentioned. There's a magazine article about it and the transfer process with Warner if you do a Google search.
