I honestly don't imagine it staying this price on release. But, I guess we'll see.
But that's just it. The issue isn't the price per se, but the price DISPARITY between editions. $26 for CE3K vs $8 for E.T. (with E.T. actually having more of an actual REASON to upgrade to the nicer set - so far as we currently know anyway). Regardless of whether CE3K goes lower before the release date (and it's actually gone back UP at Amazon after hitting a low of $22 a while back), I don't see it closing to anywhere near $8 of the cheaper edition.

This is a good point that I overlooked. However, what's caused me to ask the question repeatedly about the gift set specs in this thread is just how skewed Sony's pricing is compared to Universal. It's so skewed, in fact, I keep asking what's included because I can't wrap my head around the price difference. It keeps thinking, "There's got to me more included, right'!? Apparently, not.

PR release is out -- 4K has ALL THREE cuts.

Does not seem to be any reason to buy the Gift Set unless you like the bells and whistles.

Quote:
CULVER CITY, Calif. (August 17, 2017) – Following its exclusive one week engagement in theaters across the country starting September 1, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment celebrates the 40th anniversary of legendary director Steven Spielberg’s epic adventure CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND on September 19 with the new 4K restoration available on 3-disc 4K Ultra HD, a Limited Edition 3-disc 4K Ultra HD “Light and Sound” Gift Set, and in high-def on 2-disc remastered Blu-ray. A must-own for all true fans, the highly collectible Limited Edition Gift Set features illuminated packaging that plays the iconic 5-tone motif. Also included is an expanded booklet with rare archival photos. Both Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD releases include all three restored versions of the film, including the 1977 theatrical version, the 1980 Special Edition and the 1997 Director’s Cut.

In addition to the legacy bonus materials, the CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND Blu-ray comes with new bonus content, including rare, never-before-seen home movies and gags from the set, and the all-new featurette “Three Kinds of Close Encounters.” This featurette includes a new interview with director Steven Spielberg on the legacy of the film, as well as new interviews with directors J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) and Denis Villeneuve (Arrival) on the impact of Close Encounters.

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND is presented with an all-new 4K restoration, fully restored from the 35mm original camera negative, thereby utilizing in 4K the full resolution, detail and color depth inherent in the film. 4K Ultra HD brings the full power of this restoration into the home, featuring four times the resolution of high definition, high dynamic range (HDR)--which produces brilliant highlights, vibrant colors and greater contrast on compatible displays. The Blu-ray will also utilize this new restoration at HD resolution. Both 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray versions will feature all three versions of the movie and the original restored 5.1 DTS-HD MA audio.

Bonus Features Include:

All three versions of the film: 1977 Theatrical Version, 1980 Special Edition & 1997 Director’s Cut
ALL-NEW: “Three Kinds of Close Encounters” Featurette

Sony come through with the goods, I was quietly confident that they'd do so. Well done for providing the new restoration on the Blu-ray too. Cue the inevitable complaints about no immersive remix but, honestly, I could not give a shit. The DTS-HD audio on the Blu-ray literally causes my subwoofer to spaz out and I don't be needin' any more than that.

I think it was a new overhaul the first time they restored CE3K.

Maybe I am reading too closely, but does it clarify that all 3 cuts will be in 4K? It's says it includes them, but because the 4K comes with a blu ray disc, the other cuts may be on the blu and not in 4K.

So they can claim that the 4K edition "contains all three cuts" but it could be two of those cuts are on the blu ray.

No Dolby Atmos is a deal breaker for me. Just canceled my pre order. Will settle for my old blu-ray set and pick this up used from Amazon in November for a few dollars less. Way to drop the ball, Sony. You won't get my money now. Somebody else will. I was so looking forward to a new immersive audio experience for this classic.

I read it the exact same way. All it says is that both releases "include" all three cuts. No exact clarification on what format all three cuts come in.

I canceled mine because it isn't in 3D and Odorama, also formats that have nothing to do with this movie but that I now demand be randomly grafted onto it.

Solidarity, my brother!
