The screenshots posted on here don't compare to the actual blu ray discs. The colors aren't horrible There is grain in some scenes. The gloom and doom by some on this board is ridiculous.

I am watching the blu-ray. The pilot colors are horrible. I am currently extracting the first blu-ray disc and other episodes actually look pretty good. I haven't gotten the pilot episode extracted yet to compare.

I may have spoken too soon. I think my projector may be screwed up. I think I messed with some settings on it recently. On my PC, the color looks ok even with the pilot episode at first glance.
Update: after a short analysis of the color, I think it is actually pretty accurate. My projector is also accurate. I think the problem was the first 20 minutes that I watched of the pilot just has bad lighting. For now I am happy with the color and don't plan to regrade it. So the guy who was claiming that the 4x3 HD digital versions were superior is off his rocker?
I can see the 16x9 remaster is clearly far superior (apart from framing), but that's a different remaster. Someone was claiming that the new 4x3 digital versions were superior to the Blu-ray. If you can't see that the 16x9 is far more HD than the Blu-ray, you needs your eyes checked. I completely understand people who want it for the 4x3 framing, but if you think the PQ actually looks better, you're kidding yourself. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by DawnShadow; 07-29-2020 at 03:54 AM. |

I'm honestly not sure at this point which way is better or worse to watch it - 16:9 or the 4:3 blu-rays. It's absurd to have to even ask this question. I normally strongly prefer sticking with the original aspect ratio, but what good is that when the image may be noticeably inferior to the 16:9? So possibly more natural colors and better grain/detail in the 16:9, or go with the 4:3 blu-ray for the proper aspect ratio, but some possible color variances and a good dose of DNR resulting in a waxy image? I almost want to cancel my order but I'll leave it and judge for myself when it arrives. At least the price is reasonable.

I just double-checked and it turns out I do own the original double-sided discs. I thought for some reason I bought the newer sets. That's good news as long as they still play. Maybe the Warner double-sided discs are more reliable than Universal's discs were - they had a record of having problems.

After watching the first two episodes, I am happy enough with the Blu-rays. I would definitely choose those over the cropped widescreen versions. In motion, the detail is definitely good enough and a huge upgrade over the DVD's. The color is also good.

Arrived this morning from Amazon, only 2 days from Philadelphia to Ireland.
Have only seen a handful of episodes on Irish tv about 25 years ago so looking forward to tucking in to this. |

I think I've figured out the audio error. It is a reel change error. At the end of a reel, filmmakers usually repeat the last 2 seconds of dialogue/music, so that nothing gets chopped off when the reels are connected. Sometimes, they forget to take out the repeated material, and it repeats. This error occurs exactly 2 seconds before the end of the shot. The last frame of the shot wobbles, indicating the end of the reel. The reason the dvd didn't have it, is because it was taken from an IP and the extra material was snipped out.

Watched the first three episodes last night and it was a blast. So glad I decided to buy the set. Good escape entertainment is what I need right now.

Very interesting comparison. Thanks for sharing. The color grading on the Blu is definitely different than the other versions. IMO, the DVD has an overall orangish hue to it. The DCU and iTunes versions lean red. The Blu is more natural looking and in line with a modern day restoration. As far as detail goes, I see pluses and minuses to each of the screencaps. I'll leave it to someone else to comment on the level of DNR being used. In terms of framing, assuming that the DVD (the oldest version) is the correct one and closest to the original broadcast presentation, then the DCU and Blu are slightly zoomed in (but by different amounts) and the cropped iTunes is simply wrong.
I started watching the Blu last night and the thing that jumped out at me were some of the process shots in the pilot film. The section after Wagner gets shot out of his plane and parachutes back to earth is an ugly mess. I have the original double-sided DVD set. I'm going to compare those sections tonight. It's been so long since I watched it, but I don't recall if the DVD looked really bad there, too. |
