United Kingdom The Case of the Missing Birthday Cake (TPTV Facebook page post)

A lovely post on Talking Pictures' Facebook page where Noel and Mike visited Pete Murray for his 99th birthday. I did spot the intended/unintended humour in some of the latter pictures (the birthday cake disappearing off the table (thinking of the recurring gag on The Footage Detectives by Noel about Mike eating some of the biscuits and moving the plate round to make it look like none are missing).

The listings now go up to Sunday 20th October.

On Friday 18th October, The World of Hammer begins a run with this episode, as the first entry in "The Cellar Club", with a rerun of the Hammer House of Mystery and Suspense starting immediately after it. Although The World of Hammer is only clip shows narrated by the late great Oliver Reed, I recall that it includes clips from some of the lesser known Hammer films, as well as the horror classics, and acts as a good introduction to these.

Visited TPTV's website earlier and saw that a new week had been added to both the TV Schedule and TV Highlights sections. As well as what you posted above Cutback, some other observations:

- an episode of fifties anthology series Star Performance ("A Note of Fear"), airing on Tuesday 15th October at 6.30 pm - 7.05 pm

- a new series by the looks of it, premiering on Monday and Tuesday nights on TPTV, A Good Read with Mike Read (beginning with "The Ides of March, Parts One & Two", airing on Monday 14th October at 11.15 pm - 11.50 pm and Tuesday 15th October at 11.25 pm - 0.05 am)

- airing on Wednesday 16th October (at 4.35 pm - 4.50 pm) is early-fifties short film Ghost Towns of Death Valley

- airing on Saturday 19th October (at 4.50 am - 6 am) is early-fifties "industrial film" A Case for Handling

- an episode of anthology series One Step Beyond (from the second season, "Ordeal on Locust Street"), airing on Saturday 19th October at 12 noon - 12.35 pm

- the surviving colour episode of Z-Cars airing on Saturday 19th October (at 7 pm - 8 pm) is "Pressure" (a Series 9 episode that originally aired on UK TV in February, 1974)

- TPTV's repeat run of The Law and Mr. Jones moves onto the second and final season on Sunday 20th October (at 5.30 am - 6 am) with the episode "No News is Good News"

- and starting on Sunday 20th October (at 9 pm - 10.05 pm) is drama series Victorian Scandals (the first episode being shown is "The Frontiers of Science").

United Kingdom Preview series What's on Talking Pictures TV with Noel

Had meant to post this by last Friday night at the latest. A new edition of preview show What's on Talking Pictures TV with Noel (episode 25) premiered on the channel earlier today. It's being repeated on:

Friday 4th October at 5.50 am - 6 am
and Saturday 5th October at 7.45 am - 7.55 am.

*****

I don't know if this happened in every local region, but there was a technical issue with Caroline Munro's Cellar Club intro last Friday night before the latest episode of Hammer House of Mystery and Suspense (the TPTV logo was in the top right-hand corner, but the screen was completely blank, which stayed the same until the the adverts started). The outro previewing next Friday night's episode "And the Wall Came Tumbling Down" had no technical issues.

Noticed on The Footage Detectives the past two Sundays, as well as on the edition before the current one of the preview show What's on Talking Pictures TV with Noel, that Noel is now wearing glasses.

And on last night's new edition of The Heritage Chart Show, the end credits were cut off abruptly again after a brief change recently (the screen fading to black).

United Kingdom The TV Schedule and TV Highlights sections on TPTV's website

Checked Talking Pictures' website yesterday to see if the TV Schedule and TV Highlights sections had been updated. A new week's worth of listings have been added to the TV Highlights section and two weeks' worth to the TV Schedule section:

TV Schedule (Monday 21st October to Sunday 3rd November)
TV Highlights (Monday 21st to Sunday 27th October).

Some observations:

The surviving episodes of Z-Cars being shown on Saturday 25th October and Saturday 2nd November are "Priority" and "Background" (two Series 9 episodes, both originally shown on UK TV in early-April, 1974).

It appears a new (to TPTV) episode of anthology series One Step Beyond (from the second season, "Brainwave") is being shown on the channel on Sunday 26th October (at 12 noon - 12.35 pm).

Two episodes of the Beverly Garland-starring series Decoy are being shown on Thursday 31st October and Sunday 2nd November ("To Trap a Thief" and "Deadly Corridor"), airing at 4.30 am - 5 am and 9.20 am - 9.50 am respectively.

Airing on Friday 1st November is an episode of anthology series Celebrity Playhouse that has a cast that includes Dick Powell and Beverly Garland, airing at 4.55 am - 5.25 am.

A clip from this was shown on The Footage Detectives a few Sundays ago, "Make Your Meals Mushrooms". Airing on Sunday 3rd November at 5.10 am - 5.30 am.

This has aired on TPTV before, but is worth seeing again. Airing on Sunday 3rd November (at 7.20 am - 7.50 am) is an episode of anthology series Four Star Theatre, "The Listener" (the cast including Ida Lupino, Ralph Moody and Walter Coy).

United Kingdom The TV Highlights section, The Stories Behind the Songs and TPTV Festival

A new week has been added to the TV Highlights section on TPTV's website (covering Monday 11th to Sunday 17th November). Some observations (not too many this time):

- has this aired before on the channel, late-forties crime film A Matter of Murder? Airing on Monday 11th November at 4.05 pm - 5.15 pm

- an episode of fifties anthology series Star Performance called "Billy and the Bride" (the cast including Dame Angela Lansbury). Airing on Tuesday 12th November at 8.25 am - 8.55 am

- an episode (from the second season) of anthology series One Step Beyond called "The Open Window" (airing on Saturday 16th November at 12 noon - 12.35 pm).

*****

This past weekend, the main picture banner at the top of Talking Pictures' Facebook page was changed to show a new series starting on the channel on Thursday 21st November at 2.30 pm - 3.05 pm called The Stories Behind the Songs.

*****

And how did the latest TPTV Festival in Hebden Bridge go this past weekend? I ask, because during the last one (in July), pictures were posted on Talking Pictures and Renown Pictures' Facebook pages. As of the time of writing? Nothing yet for the latest TPTV Festival (unless it's staring me in the face).

- starting on Saturday 23rd November are eighties series Beau Geste and Travelling Man (airing at 6.25 pm - 7 pm and 8 pm - 9.05 pm)

It might well be of interest that at 22.05 on Sunday 1st December, TPTV are playing The Wheeltappers & Shunter's Social Club from the very beginning. It's rather handy, as it improves upon the DVD release by having subtitles with it.

I've watched them all again over the last year or so, and they're pretty entertaining stuff, including the opportunity of seeing acts like The Krankies or Cannon & Ball in their prime, before their material became threadbare and pantomime-like. What's really odd is that most go in expecting the likes of Bernard Manning trotting out racist material from the outset, but this wasn't the case. It was a couple of series in before one particular guest came out with a very casually racist gag which opened the floodgates somewhat in its wake.

The person in question? None other than Marti Caine!

CV, you might be interested in a new series that started recently on Talking Pictures, called The Stories Behind the Songs. It premieres on Thursday afternoons.

The TV Highlights section on TPTV's website has been updated (two weeks' worth of listings, covering Monday 23rd December to Sunday 5th January). The regular schedules don't seem to be affected over the Christmas and New Year holidays period. Z-Cars continues on Saturday evenings.

Z-Cars:

"House to House" - premiering on Saturday 28th December at 7 pm (this episode is set just before Christmas)
"Local Knowledge" - premiering on Saturday 4th January at 7 pm.

I quite enjoyed last Saturday evening's surviving Series 10 episode "Gardens".

Christmas TV schedules:

It's been mentioned by Mike Read a couple of times recently on The Heritage Chart Show, but the Christmas special is premiering on TPTV on Christmas Eve at 2.30 pm.

Also airing on Christmas Eve (at 9.10 pm) is compilation film The Best of Benny Hill.

Airing on Christmas Day (at 5.55 pm) is A Night on Mount Edna (Dame Edna Everage and a bunch of celebrities).

Airing on TPTV on Boxing Day (at 6.15 pm) is a television pantomime from the mid-eighties called Cinderella The Shoe Must Go On (a large cast of entertainers, musicians, comedians and actors).

Variety special:

One other thing, airing on the channel next Sunday (8th December at 7.40 pm - 8.15 pm) is mid-sixties variety show Mainly Millicent (clips from this were shown on The Footage Detectives a few Sundays ago (one included actor Kenneth Cope).

A new edition of preview show What's on Talking Pictures TV with Noel (episode 30) premieres on the channel tomorrow morning (Tuesday 10th December) at 10.50 am - 11 am, repeated on:

Wednesday 11th December at 7.05 am - 7.15 am
Thursday 12th December at 5.35 pm - 5.45 pm
Saturday 14th December at 7.35 am - 7.50 am
and Wednesday 18th December at 7.05 am - 7.15 am.

*****

It looks confusing at the moment, but as of the time of writing the TV Schedule section on TPTV's website after Monday 23rd December, instead of being in chronlogical order it's been flipped round, with Christmas Eve being the dot at the end of the row (Tuesday 24th December to Sunday 5th January is the wrong way round).

In layman's terms, the TV Schedule has been updated, now going up to and including Sunday 5th January (ditto with the TV Highlights section).

United Kingdom The Footage Detectives, The Heritage Chart Show and Z-Cars

One of the highlights for me among this past Sunday afternoon's new edition of The Footage Detectives was the Old Silas ghost story short film (and if it wasn't a ghost story it had that vibe). It was more effective than some recent full-length horror films.

It was mentioned by Mike Read during the week before last's new edition of The Heritage Chart Show, that Caroline Munro from The Cellar Club is in the music video for one of the festive songs currently in the Heritage Chart (Alone on Christmas by Curtis Stein). Did have a chuckle at the Best of Benny Hill trailer shown during one of the ad breaks. There was also a blunder during the chart countdown, reminding me of that edition of TOTP that Richard Skinner presented, when there was a mix-up with Slade and Sade (what Mike Read said was correct, but the name on the screen for this chart position said "Chris de Burgh" instead).

Enjoyed Z-Cars last Saturday night ("Pursuit" was very good and kept my interest, but I didn't enjoy it as much as "Gardens" and "Quiet As the Grave").

United Kingdom Doomwatch - 1970 series - starts Friday 17th January 2025 at 9.05pm

The listings site has been updated up to Sunday 19th January.

The usual shows are continuing (Z Cars etc) and there is another episode of Strange But True with Michael Aspel on Friday evening.

But what really caught my eye was the appearance of Doomwatch at 9.05pm after Caroline Munro's intro. I've never seen the series, only the theatrical movie with Ian Bannen (which i enjoyed). The series is about a government department investigating ecological issues, dangers from new scientific discoveries etc. and is known as having been waaaay ahead of its time.

There were 3 series of 13 episodes, of which about 14 episodes are lost due to BBC wiping them in the 1970s

The first episode is called "The Plastic Eaters" and is literally about something that eats plastic.

The cast includes a very young Robert Powell.

I am VERY MUCH looking forward to watching the series.

There was a DVD release by Simply Media of the surviving episodes about 8 years ago.
