This link has a film cell of the White/Pink bathroom conversation and even at a distance you can see it's nowhere near as dark as on that cap.

Those cells are also probably being backlit for the picture to be taken, and just looking at a piece of film won't look the same as it will look projected on a huge movie screen, either.

Yep, not to mention just how dubious those "cells" look. I might be wrong, but the whole thing looks photoshopped. I did a Google search for "Reservoir Dogs 33mm film cells" and some really funny shit showed up. Looks like there's a market out there for faking film cells. Unbelievable

I’ve just checked it out, although only in HDR, and it looks very good. No issues with the lighting whatsoever, looks exactly how it should to me. I was expecting a lot more grain, but that issue might just be iTunes’ low bitrate.
(The setup I used couldn’t handle DV, the DV definitely is an option) |

People expecting Dogs to be a grainy film, are barking up the wrong tree.

Also, please let it be known, while HDR to SDR are an aproximation to what you may see in screen, it's not exactly accurate. It's, I repeat, an aproximation. A dedicated panel will show things differently. I repeat, it's not how I'd like to see a movie or what I'm accostumed for most 4K scans, but it's not a bad one, I'm happy with it, even if it's not what I was accostumed to, it's decently a huge upgrade, and I bet on disc with proper bitrate and disc Dolby Vision, it'll be impressive. Now, we'll see how Paramount treated Pulp Fiction in December.. hopefully no DNR, hopefully no wax, hopefully no fake grain. Who knows. |

Since I'm impatient (and absolutely LOVE this movie), I watched the stream last night on a freshly calibrated (this past Saturday) JVC NX7 projecting onto a 110 inch screen.
First off, I've watched the Blu-ray at least a dozen times. Yes, the Blu-ray looks pretty crappy...but I never found it to be "unwatchable". That said, the PQ on this 4-K remaster is STUNNING! The level of picture detail is astounding and the colors look terrific! It does appear there has been some grain management here but to be honest, the movie looked fantastic to my eyes and truly filmic (that even a word?). If a bit starved stream looked this good, I can only imagine the disc looking that much better. I am so happy with what they've done here and only hope Pulp (top 5 movie for me) looks this good. *Darkness I've seen a few folks talking about the picture looking overly dark. I did a direct comparison between the Blu-ray and the stream. While the Blu is definitely brighter (it looks almost blown out in some scenes) this remaster does NOT look dark...at all...to my eyes. If I had to sum up the 4-K in one word...it would be FANTASTIC! I think fans of the film are going to be more than pleasantly surprised. |

Yeah, a faster stock would've given them more wiggle room when lighting the picture but Andrzej Sekula was adamant they should shoot the whole thing on 50 speed film. As a result it's quite possibly the glossiest, richest Super 35 cinematography I've ever seen.

Just fyi, barring some Google Play movies, that one ultra Premium exclusive streaming place, and possibly Sony's Bravia, iTunes is reasonably the highest when it comes to streaming in 4K, always reaching about 25 mb/s. Which is better than most 4K streaming.

I don't have much idea about this movie but just had a quick glance in iTunes.
First impression is the APL is quite low. This is mainly felt in the outdoor scenes. Not sure if this is how it meant to look or a misstep in HDR grading. DV Bright helps a bit. Because the grading is dark, the dark colours pop nice on the OLED lol. I bet those who prefer brightness might considering watching this in SDR as the highlights anyway look muted. Other aspects look fine. I am not seeing anything waxy despite the lack of grain. ATV 4K Developer HUD is showing AVBR: 14.93 Mbps PVBR: 24.20 Mbps. |

The APL is noticeably dimmer than OUATIH. Based on my quick glance, I didn't notice any standout specular highlights.
