Apparently a yellow submarine blu ray is making its way to the UK in May. No word of a US release date yet...

Honestly, I also want A Hard Day's Night re-released and a restoration supervised by the folks by Apple, I was really impressed by their work on the two releases that we already have!! And of course we need Help! and Let It Be as well. And I have a feeling the Anthology series will get its due afterwards on Blu too.

I like that Peter Jackson and company are doing this and I'm very excited for it.
But, I hope just for purism, that they will also include the original film of "Let it Be" in a blu ray release, even as a bonus feature. It has 50 years of memory behind it. I don't mind an add-on/expanded documentary that gives us more footage and even a different perspective, but I'd like the original version included, as well. Also, I worry about historical revisionism. ALL of The Beatles have previously talked about all of the tensions during that time. It is well documented. Now, they have elderly Ringo giving his endorsement of it being protrayed as a happy time. That's Ringo being nostalgic, I think. |

I saw the original Let It Be doc for the first time not too long ago and, to be honest, the tensions that are often referred to really aren't all that apparent in the doc; not in any significant way anyway. There are a couple of moments of frustration between members that I'd already seen countless times as examples of the band falling apart but there was nothing else in the doc apart from those moments and really, anyone who's been in a recording or writing session can probably recognise their own band in those tensions. I'm in a band and we all get on really well (and we're certainly not The Beatles) but after 6 hours in a writing or recording session, you do get pretty tired and sometimes trying to work something out and get it right can be very frustrating.
Also, that original documentary is generally just not very good apart from some of the performances. I couldn't recommend it to anyone but the most die hard fans and even then I'd warn them that it's not particularly compelling. This re-do sounds like a good thing but it's a shame only half the boys will be there to tell the story. |

We were shocked when Paul and George went at it "I'll play it any way you want me to play it or won't play at all" to paraphrase. That's the main "tension" in the film. Also when they are goofing around on Octopus's Garden on the piano John, George and Ringo as soon a Paul walks in they stop. It was kind of odd looked as if the other three were a gang and Paul was left out Other than that the movie is kind of boring. There's the great scene though when John and Paul are at the mic facing each other and Paul goes into an Elvis imitation and a big smile goes across John's face. As a huge Beatle fan and over 50 years hindsight. It wasn't Yoko! It wasn't Linda! The group had just outgrown each other. Possibly only Ringo wanted the group to continue. As John has said we were all a little worried about Ringo which is why George helped out on It Don't Come Easy, John had him play drums on Plastic Ono Band and they all chipped in on "Ringo" although again John George and Ringo on one track and Paul on his own tracks. No Reunion! Looking forward to the Peter Jackson film. The Beatles still remain the greatest musical group of all time. Let's see if Taylor Swift or The Weekend's music is around 50 years later. Anyone listening to Glenn Miller or Rudy Vallee? Nope but people are still listening to The Beatles yeah yeah yeah! Last edited by 50strat54; 05-10-2021 at 04:06 PM. |

I agree. I grew up in the post-Beatles generation, but they are still my favorite band and the soundtrack to my life. When I first heard the Let It Be album and later saw the film on Beta cassette and then in a repertory theatre, I experienced both with similar feelings to those who grew up with the Beatles. I was aware that they had already broken up when the film was released and that this was their final document (yes, I know Abbey Road was recorded after this). Those moments of tension and even the relatively gentle police presence at the end played out like the real drama they were intended to convey by the filmmaker. It is both a moving and depressing film. The Beatles were no more and we'll never get back to what we had.
I rewatched my bootleg DVD of Let It Be last night. The film is in dire need of preservation and remastering. I was also disappointed that the new CD/BD-A box set didn't include the whole concert as a separate disc. We are still missing those songs and takes. Beatles and Co. have been very good at keeping secrets, and I hope that is still true. What we still need is a remastered Let It Be film on BD with proper commentary from a film or Beatles historian. We also need a full CD release of the original motion picture soundtrack with remastered sound. Quote:
