We already know that it is possible to stream at higher bitrates. We also know that Sony offers just a tiny handful of their own movies as part of the Sony Bravia Core service and ONLY to those who have recently purchased one of their TVs and then only for a limited time, something like 2 years after the TV purchase.

None of the major streaming services offer similar bitrates and they likely never will because customers like you don't care if they do or not. Case in point:

You, and many like you, wouldn't notice the difference even if streaming providers did increase the quality of their streams proving why they don't need to waste their money doing so.

My hobby has endured for 41 years and counting. That may not be forever, but it's enough to affirm my continued confidence.

What is the acceptable ratio of time spent outdoors to time spent posting? What if I post while I'm outdoors? Does that count? I want to make sure that I'm in compliance in case the President's Council on Sports, Fitness & Nutrition (PCSFN) kicks down my door.

VVC (H.266) would require new decoding hardware. Its advantage over HEVC (H.265) is at very low bit rates where the difference in PSNR is significant. Once you are up to several Mbps the difference in PSNR becomes quite small therefore offering little to no advantage at Blu-ray and UHD Blu-ray bit rates. VVC main use will probably be video via cell phone use.

I too rip my disc. Just added a Zidoo UHD5000 media player to the rack a couple of months back. The Zidoo Z9X and Zappiti Neo are now in limbo. Still play rental disc on the Oppo UDP-203 or the Sony UBP-X1000. Also use the Oppo for my DVD rips because I have not saw another device that will match it for DVD play.

In other words, it's all just another day on Internet forums.

Not interested in taking this any further, beyond my final position. I clearly stated the issue I had with your post, and throwing out insults to members isn’t going to change that.

No one is delusional, (I knew you were pushing that agenda from your first post, which was my initial issue) we all know, one day our disc hobby will end in terms of new releases, but that’s a long way away. Some boutique labels are thriving (Vinegar syndrome for example) and even if those labels were the only ones that existed, it would be a long haul)

We have had people come into this thread and declare disc as dead as long as I have been a member, they all have one thing in common, they were completely wrong.

That’s it from me, good day.

If we are to be honest like users above are claiming, they will have to admit streaming is a disaster not just for the disc business but also the theatrical one. I.e. the main sources of revenue for films. We can see its effects on the box office and thus the types of films that get made. It is true that in large part "they don't make them like they used to anymore." Netflix has not been a replacement and for them quality is an exception rather than a rule, and that was during a time when they wanted to make "prestige" films.

Just to add, also available on PlayStation 5, regardless of tv make, not that I have ever been tempted.

Netflix said they were going to be the online equivalent of Blockbuster, now, movies aren’t even their main focus. Oh, and they also said they would never include ads, they weren’t that type of service. Oh dear.

Eventually, it’s just going to be all that trash we can watch on cable, WWE, cheesy romance flicks, reality, etc.. with good quality drama being the exception, rather than the rule.

Whoa. I have a PS5.
... This sounds interesting.
(Also I'm tempted to buy the old game Dark Forces. Is it bad karma to play retro games on a state of the art console ? )

Yesterday was so great. I had friends over for a afternoon movie which was a blast.

Then, I got a call from a friend who was going to host a movie and wanted some advice. He was hosting American Fiction at the church at 7pm and didn't have much of a clue about setting it up. So, being 5PM I went to help him. He wanted to purchase it on Amazon and then download it because he doesn't trust his network reliability. I set up the projector. He had not considered the sound but he had a bluetooth speaker and it was charged. I set it all up and went back home for dinner. Today he said he had a good crowd (which for his movie nights would mean more than 5) and everything worked.

Netflix has this kind of strange relationship with it's customers. It grew from times when they made the worst decisions (Qwikster) and the internet would light up with customers ready to suggest Netflix was essential and no matter what terrible thing they were still the best. Kind of "Thank You, Can I Have Another? " Type of abusive relationship. They would raise prices and some would complain but an army of Netflix fans would roast them.

Yeah, it’s right there under apps.

Up until January,I had only played new PS5 games (Returnal, GOT, Ratchett and Clank, Deathloop, A Plague Tale, Astrobot) but I gave Minecraft a go and I’m completely hooked. So, retro and older games are certainly not a taboo in my household.
I have played Minecraft exclusively for two months now, developing my house and surrounding area while mining everything I can.

The great thing about next gen for me, is that I’m in quite a unique situation where I was locked in VR for six years and missed out on the back end (couple of years) of PS4 and the first year of PS5, so while most moan about the PS+ extra library, I have a constant supply of new games.

Before Penguin pulls me, I use that saved money for more disc purchases, especially 4K. The gaping difference in 4K disc A/V wise compared to streaming simply doesn’t exist in the gaming world. Also, unlike movies, I don’t replay single player games once complete.

I think I understand.

Recently the release of Apple Vision Pro spurred my interest in VR. I upgraded to a Quest 3 headset. One of the neatest things about it is you can use the Android PS Remote Play app and play the PS5 on it using a PS5 controller. So it has the functionality of the PS Portal but the illusion of a very large screen. But, the coolest thing I have found is playing piano in Augmented Reality. The PainoVision app is cheap and you can upload whatever songs you want to learn using midi files from online.

As I've mentioned, my son has taken over the physical media side of the movie procurement in our house. I see that that some of the bins have been moved to some unused space in the basement and I'm prteey sure that he's not yet employed any kind of systematic ordering of the titles.

For Christmas, I bought him a STEAMDECK. It occurred to me as I had to navigate the setup of a STEAM account that in the gaming realm at least, he's alraedy submitted to the type of setup that he's seeking to avoid with his (my) movie collection. Other than NINTENDO, we don't usually by consoles as he pretty much exclusively plays on his supercomputer...although I think I hit a homerun with the STEAMDECK as he seems to have taken to it...

Looks quite cool. You haven’t experienced VR until you have punched furniture trying to beat your last score in Beat Sabre, or forgot the table in front of you (Esper in this case) isn’t real and placing the controllers on thin air as my phone rang.

Good stuff. I honestly think something similar will be the next generation of console. Like the Steamdeck and Switch, but more advanced graphics and the ability to play 4K when docked to a big display and full HD when handheld.
