Technical question.. has Titanic ever played using 70mm film print? Or has it always been 35mm cinemascope?

Yes, it has been played in 70mm in selected theaters for a short period of time, according to some people who projected it and saw it as well.
Catching a 70mm screening, at the time (of any movie, not just TITANIC), felt like driving 45 minutes to get to the closest IMAX theatre to get the best theatrical experience.

TITANIC 70mm was sourced from the Super35 negative but, according to some projectionists, it was way more sharper and rich in color and had better dynamic range.

those are just blow ups , titanic in 70 dts THX

when i saw titanic sr-d projected at the local abc 1 , they had a lens to give a simulated 70mm for 35mm the screen was opened to the full 70mm masking ratio and looked very large

having projected it myself at warner bros m at bristol on one of 4 larger screens , okay , so , been there done that , now there is 4k and seems like , fake-k scam-k , otherwise where is the making off behind the scenes of the 4k ? all i see in the disc extras is same as on the other discs , milktanic , cowtanic and anyone can watch that for free on youtube

Yes, and not just 5/70 but 15/70 IMAX too, the dual-strip 3D print is majestic.

Some cool info here

https://www.in70mm.com/presents/1963...anic/index.htm

Looks like Seattle Cinerama did a few screenings back in 2007 for their annual 70mm festival. Coincidentally, that amazing film palace just reopened a few hours ago. The 35/70mm projectors are still there, including the 3-strip Cinerama projectors.

Maybe in the future I'll have the chance to see Titanic in 70mm on that big screen, but I'm not gonna get my hopes up, lol. Hasn't been shown since 2008 at the Laemmle Royal in LA.

Wished there were more people like the author speaking out about this in public (unlike most other reviews from "bigger" websites). He also briefly mentions the "fans of authentic movie transfers": we are in the minority now...

I only saw the 35mm with SDDS 8-channel sound (I remember, because there was a huge SDDS logo on the door to TITANIC), 2 times on December 1997 and 1 on January 1998, in Sydney.
Best theater experience ever, as ALL my family was also there.

In the same theatre, in 1999, I also saw my very first Star Wars movie ever in a theater: The Phantom Menace, with Dolby Digital EX sound, other than the first Matrix which, back in the day, no one had any real clue as to what the movie was all about. You just had to buy a ticket and watch it (back when trailers didn't spoiled half of the movie, and always left you with a "urge" to see the movie).
And there's still a cinema in my homeland (Australia), who still project classics in 35mm, every once in awhile, including TITANIC as well.
I would've payed even $50 to get a front row seat to rewatch this movie (and maybe some other classics, too) in its original film format, tbh.

While scans of 35mm movies you find online might not be exactly accurate or Blu-Ray quality, at least they do the job, for me, to keep the nostalgia at bay.
And i'm glad that there are even groups of people who preserve original theatrical digital mixes and share them with others.

^^^^^YES.
That's the cinema in Australia I was talking about.
Thanks for bringing this up.
They do many 35/70mm screenings, there.

Indeed a much more reasonable, balanced review that points out the good and the bad in a more detailed, thoughtful, professional manner than most of the reviews out there for this film have given us.

I haven't picked up Avatar in 4K, as I already have the 3D Blu-Ray and the Collector's Extended Edition set.
But I heard that he did the same process for Avatar as well.
Can't imagine what a "WAX-fest" that is.
Guess I won't be picking up Aliens or True Lies, either, and stick with what I already have, if this has become the "norm" for JC and other directors.
What a shame, really.

To think that other directors and even small studios spend a lot of time tinkering with original movie negatives to create great transfers, and some others choose more fast and easy ways to pull out transfers, there's no reason to support and pay premium prices for a sub-par product.

If JC and other directors who embraced AI think that this will keep physical formats afloat, they're wrong.

If only someone actually made an HD scan of that LD, just like they did for True Lies (which is still floating around the internet), it would've been amazing.
