It’s the completionist in me. I still have the OG print from high school, but the disc is in pretty bad shape. I must have watched EoE over 200 times in the span of a few years and this was before I had any idea how to safely handle or care for a DVD. I just wanna replace the original and the listings on eBay are cheap enough to justify it for me.

I'm still trying to figure out if those are legitimate or what, I can't find any information on them at all. There were 8 Essence of Anime DVDs, and they were all released on the same day, September 4, 2007.

There's also one for the R.O.D OVA, but it's missing. Time to fix that.

If it's not about the actual show/movie/whatever, I don't really find it that interesting.
Bloopers can be fun though, FMA had some good ones.

I guess if it's about the actual dubbing/localisation process, then fair enough, but commentary tracks and interviews with dub actors are kinda weird to me.

I don't have anything against them, if people like them than that's cool, I just find them odd.

A good number care about them, though it depends on who is involved and doing them. I've still yet to listen to a commentary in full (English or Japanese), but when I've listenened to bits of ADV Films commentary tracks, I'm looking forward to listening more. Meanwhile the few bits I've heard for FUNimation ones when I needed to know who was in them to add that info to ANN, my ears nearly bled on most of them.

Japanese commentaries, those rarely ever make it over here, but those aren't always about the dubbing/production. For the Gunbuster vs. Diebuster movie, they had the Diebuster voice actors do a commentary for Gunbuster: The Movie and had the Gunbuster voice actors do a commentary for Diebuster: The Movie. ADV Films also did something a bit similar with Magical Play, they took a few voice actors that had no roles in the show and had them do a commentary track, it's weird. Puni Puni Poemy is also interesting in that there's a video extra that shows them filming the commentary track.

I value Japanese extras more than English ones (especially JP booklet content), but English extras can be good.

I almost always watch bonus features at least once, and it is pretty weird to watch a show subbed but then watch extras with the dub actors. Who are you people??
Likewise with a show like Death Note which I chose to watch dubbed but has extras with the Japanese cast.

Tho I enjoyed things like the dub cast reunion on Cowboy Bebop, but I suppose they can be considered in another league compared to most dub casts. Even though they didn't make the show they still have interesting takes on their work and the localization process and the impact of the show all of these years later. And I'm sure the original dub cast for Eva would have some interesting stories to share, but I don't really see how it would work as a commentary track over a episode.

I remember watching EoE with the commentary and it had who I believe is Rei’s English voice actress talking with someone else about various elements that went into the dub. She also offered a bunch of context into the understanding of the lore and difficulties in localization (she broke down literal translations and how they determined the English script). It was fascinating to me because those were still the days where resources were limited and the internet was still a new platform to research anime. The background she offered on the lore was extremely interesting. I keep on recalling a scene where she described a character as the biblical character “Kane” and another scene in a parking garage with the number 667 and commenting how that signifies “the neighbor of the beast.”

It's cheap "bonus" material for companies that produce a dub to make it seem like they are adding value to a release.

Yeah something like that's understandable. I personally wasn't really a fan of the dub like a lot of people, but I get the dub itself is pretty famous.

Oh to add onto this, all 26 episodes of Persona 4: The Animation have Japanese commentaries (these aren't on the dub-only Blu-rays), and they sometimes brought in people that didn't have a single line in that specific episode but had lines in other episodes.

I've got the JP "Standard Edition" Blu-ray set incoming to complete my JP Eva TV collection, but it won't arrive until next week which is why it's not pictured. And by "complete", I mean having one full set apiece of the following content:

• Original TV broadcast version of 1-26 and Death[True] & Rebirth.
• "Video Format" version of 1-20, 21'-24', 25-26, 25'-26', Death[True]² & Rebirth, and End of Evangelion.
• "Renewal" version of 1-26, 21'-24', and Revival of Evangelion
• Blu-ray version of 1-26, 21'-24', 25'-26', Death & Rebirth, End of Evangelion, and Revival of Evangelion.

There's a handful of various editions that I don't own any longer like the DTS Collector's Edtion of Revival of Evangelion, but it has the exact same content as the standard Dolby Digital release except for the difference in audio codec used.

In the US, the entire series had Paula Cole’s “I Don’t Wanna Wait” on broadcast TV. Jann Arden’s “Run Like Mad” was used in some overseas markets for the first season before switching to IDWW. In the US, the latter is now all we hear on video and streaming. The first two season sets kept IDWW, but the complete series set apparently has RLM for the whole series.

Meh, I really don't see the novelty in the Japanese "Standard Edition" BD singles. Even their cover art is basically recycled from the 2003 "Renewal" DVD singles, although much improved in this instance by not having the NGE wordmark and included episode titles covering half of its front (as seen below).

Between the omission of all the movies (D&R, EoE, and Revival) and lack of included bonus materials, there isn't any rational reason to buy the BD singles especially since they cost significantly more in total than the "Standard Edition" box set which has all the films *and* on-disc extras.

I can see some people opting for the singles if you can't spend that much money all at once for the complete set. Spend a little bit now and a little bit later until you have the entire series, rather than deprive yourself of ALL of the content for two or three months just to save up for the big splurge.

Also, I love seeing old favorite posters/boxart reused for an updated release, especially given that a lot of re-released content tends to have covers that are very visually lacking. These old NGE covers look great with the black blu-ray case framing them. AND this time they aren't obscured by those gigantic text boxes crowding in on the sides.
