There are a few but not that many.

Streamz is definitely the biggest one. That one has the rights to everything HBO.
But you can only get it at one internet provider.

Viaplay which has movies, series and sports.

Videoland which used to be a physical video rental chain in the 90's.

I've found a few small ones like Cinetree and Cinemember. ( Those are from the Netherlands though )

I can understand the financial incentive (i.e. company makes money every time an ad is shown) but I just don't get the pause ads. If someone pause a 5 minute video because the phone rang, someone is talking to them..... does starting an ad that makes noise a good idea-- isn't that the reason they paused in the first place to make it quiet, now they will also have to mute t6he device?

Also, what if one pauses a stream to study the freeze frame, for missing detail or something they missed in the background for example?

No internet? No problem.

I'm even keeping my Betamax (and 8mm, VHS tapes and CED, LD, VideoCD, HD-DVD discs too).

I read the same thing. And if my local Target is any indication the report is true. The turned the entire disc section into books. They have one end display that still has movies.

That's unfortunate. I buy a lot of Blu-rays during their buy 2 get 1 free sales.

With the big stores removing Physical Media (and still stocking Vinyl) Thank goodness for Amazon.

I bought something today that I will need on Sunday via Amazon and they say it's coming tomorrow. I don't see any need to look for new releases of movies on disc in town anymore each store has random wares and very limited selection.

I haven't used Prime Video in forever and I understand it's much worse now so if they can keep up the fast shipping I'm happy to keep the Prime subscription. I enjoy shopping online now like everyone else apparently.

I just wander when the UPS/FedEx guys will want tips. I have heard this is never but you know how it goes.

At onetime I used to use DVD Pricesearch and others to compare prices of BD and UHD BD but in most cases Amazon had the lowest price so I quit comparing.

I used to buy most computer components from Newegg but the recent 2 builds came from Amazon because of lower prices. B&H Photo was cheaper on some components but they were special order which was non cancelable and non returnable.

Between the 4 of us, not a day goes by where I'm not receiving something from AMAZON... often multiple deliveries a day for which I get a notification on my phone with a picture of my front door.. and sometimes my neighbour's..lol..

In Toronto, if I order by 11am, I often get things the same day.... even on Saturdays!

As far as physical media is concerned, they're pretty much back to release date after being understandably hit or miss since COVID.

Also apropos of this thread, I'm excited to see that one of my favourites from last year ALL OF US STRANGERS is getting a Blu-ray in the UK while I'm visiting so I'll be bringing that home with me!

Criminally underrated... It streamed here in 4K DV but this is a key example of a movie that I will want to keep so I'll be glad to have the Blu-ray!

To be fair, it has had plenty of plaudits.

I loved Aftersun, with has similar themes in some instances I guess. This seems like a no brainer to me. Great actors and the story is intriguing to me.

I see that it was recognized over on your side of the pond... over here it was crickets. I literally found it on streaming one night as a throw away when I couldn't sleep. As I wrote in it's dedicated thread, an hour and forty-five minutes later, I was wrecked... IMHO, this deserved OSCAR consideration on quite a few fronts... Not sure why it was overlooked.

I'll definitely have to check out AFTERSUN. I know it was on my radar sometime ago and somehow fell off...

Aftersun knocked me for six, was still thinking about it weeks later.

I bought the Mubi U.K. edition, I’m trying to find out if it’s region free so at least you know.

Edit: it’s available in U.S and presumably Canada through A24 shop. In other words, it’s a A24 exclusive there.

I am pretty confident to recommend a blind buy for yourself, it really is that good.

I'm sold on AFTERSUN.. but will probably stream it.

As much as I'm effusive in my praise of ALL OF US STRANGERS, I couldn't give it a blanket recommendation. As I've written before ( in this thread?) , if you were uncomfortable watching SALTBURN for ...reasons.. then you needn't watch this. That shouldn't be a spoiler as the two movies have nothing in common to anyone else.

Won’t be a problem.

I’m pretty sure I will love it, as I get older, these type of films really get to me and I find them compelling.

Watched another excellent film last week, listed here. It’s a gay themed thriller, and another home run.

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Femme-Blu-ray/352829/

Two LGB films in the space of a couple of weeks, and both very strong.

I’m a straight guy, but love, hate and loss are universal of course, so these films are relatable.
