File size and bitrate does not alone determine the quality of the image. It’s the encoding settings that determine the quality the most. Obviously bitrate is a determining factor if too low, but you can still have high bitrate encodes with sub-par compression (see some of Radius60’s work for Criterion) due to poor settings. Most Japanese compressionists rely on the bitrate to save the quality of the compression, while the approach of most western compressionists is to have a consistently high quality with a variable bitrate rather than a consistent bitrate with a potentially variable quality.

I hope GKIDS releases the non-remastered transfers of the series on DVD, even if it is very unlikely.
I would be happy even if it only has the Netflix dub when it happens. The old video releases of Evangelion playing on an SD CRT with the highest quality analogue DVD connections (Component or RGB SCART) has a really great appearance which is the most authentic way to experience Evangelion and something I probably prefer over the HD version. My ideal version of this so-called Ultimate Edition would have the following discs: Disc 1 Blu-ray: Episodes 1-7 (Netflix + ADV dubs/subs, Japanese 2.0 Original + 5.1 Renewal, 5.1 dubs) [HD remaster] Disc 2 Blu-ray: Episodes 8-14 (Netflix + ADV dubs/subs, Japanese 2.0 Original + 5.1 Renewal, 5.1 dubs) [HD remaster] Disc 3 Blu-ray: Episodes 15-20 + Bonus Content (Netflix + ADV dubs/subs, Japanese 2.0 Original + 5.1 Renewal, 5.1 dubs) [HD remaster] Disc 4 Blu-ray: Episodes 21'-26 + Bonus Content (Netflix + ADV dubs/subs, Japanese 2.0 Original + 5.1 Renewal, 5.1 dubs, only DC versions of 21'-24') [HD remaster] Disc 5 Blu-ray: Revival of Evangelion (Death(true)²/The End of Evangelion) + Bonus Content (Netflix + Manga dubs/subs, Japanese 2.0 Original + 5.1 Renewal, 5.1 Netflix dub + 6.1 Manga dub) [HD remaster] Disc 6 Blu-ray: Episodes 25' - 26': "Video Format" version + Bonus Content (Netflix + Manga dubs/subs) [HD remaster] Disc 7 DVD: Episodes 1-7 (Netflix + ADV dubs/subs, Japanese 2.0 Original + 5.1 Renewal, 5.1 dubs) [Original SD master] Disc 8 DVD: Episodes 8-14 (Netflix + ADV dubs/subs, Japanese 2.0 Original + 5.1 Renewal, 5.1 dubs) [Original SD master] Disc 9 DVD: Episodes 15-20 (Netflix + ADV dubs/subs, Japanese 2.0 Original + 5.1 Renewal, 5.1 dubs) [Original SD master] Disc 10 DVD: Episodes 21'-26 (Netflix + ADV dubs/subs, Japanese 2.0 Original + 5.1 Renewal, 5.1 dubs, only DC versions of 21'-24' using ADV's 2004 redub of those 4 episodes) [Original SD master] Disc 11 DVD: Episodes 25' - 26': "Video Format" version + Bonus Content (Netflix + Manga dubs/subs, Japanese 2.0 Original + 5.1 Renewal, 5.1 Netflix dub + 6.1 Manga dub) [Original SD master] I would get it even if it doesn't have Fry Me to the Moon, that would just be icing on the cake for me. I have a cheap Chinese DVD player with Component YPbPr outputs and I still have an old SD CRT TV with Component inputs for retro games and shows and the original SD masters of Evangelion would be perfect for my CRT. The movies would still look best on a 4K OLED or something, though. The best thing about my Chinese DVD player is that it has no region locking. I live in a Region 3 NTSC territory and it has no problem playing Region 1 DVDs and PAL DVDs. It even plays said PAL DVDs in the proper 50Hz granted I am using Component YPbPr video. I have the old ADV Perfect Collection DVDs and they look fantastic on my CRT, minus some of ADV's alterations to the text which I would argue is even more damaging to Evangelion than the removal of Fly Me to the Moon. For retro games, my CRT is fantastic. The Classic Sonic games (S1,S2,SCD,S3&K) look fantastic there from my Model 1 Genesis with HD Retrovision cables. PSone games with pre-rendered backgrounds such as Final Fantasy VII - IX, Chrono Cross and the Resident Evil games also blend the 3D polygonal elements with the 2D backgrounds well even in Component, as opposed to playing them in HD where the 3D elements are in low-poly HD and the 2D elements are blurry or pixelated messes. I'm baffled that this includes the video format version of EoE, probably the most pointless of all the alternate edits, but not Death and Rebirth or Death(True) or the on-air versions of 21-24
The 4-hour reconstruction is what it is, but I'd certainly recommend giving it a watch - it's fascinating. It was available on iTunes last time I checked. |

Anyways, my CRT is still best for retro games and retro shows like Friends (the original 4:3 presentations and extended episodes are only on DVD), Serial Experiments Lain and Neon Genesis Evangelion (which has a much better and grittier aesthetic pre-Renewal that looks fantastic on a CRT). This is why I really wish GKIDS added the original VHS/LD/DVD masters as the bonus DVD instead of the ADV/Manga dubs/subs. I would just include the ADV/Manga dubs and subs on the same discs as the Netflix dubs and subs while the bonus unrestored DVDs would have these same dubs and subs as well. These unrestored DVDs played on a CRT would look even more beautiful than the HD remasters on a 4K OLED. |

That said, a CRT is a must. While I am getting a Tink 5x for multiple reasons (gaming, upscaling LD and maybe VHS), a CRT, even a good consumer with component or Scart depending on region (doesn’t have to be a PVM) is a must to play older games (I love scanlines so much), and it can improve the quality of sub-par video masters. Kare Kano is a masterpiece and its sources are f**ked beyond repair (as I’ve explained before on multiple posts- search “Kare Kano” and posts by professorwho in the advanced search for more detail), yet the R2J DVDs look absolutely stunning on even the most basic CRT with composite video (in fact, I’d say the composite video hides it- as it’s a composite master to begin with). But yeah. Tink 5X is a beast. Mike Chi is a god. Kare Kano is perfect (the Blu-ray sucks). Eva good. |

Are there any alterations or quality downgrades like in the Evangelion Perfect Collection? |

Mike Chi is awesome. I had a few questions about the whole resolution change problem with non-crt TVs and he answered all of them and gave me some tips on how to minimize the issues I was having using the 2x Pro at the time. |
