TLD = When Jack opens the door to 237 he let's out all of the Dark Forces of the Hotel.
![]() History Many years ago, one of the guests who stayed in Room 217 was Lorraine Massey. An attractive, blonde-haired woman, she was known for seducing young men, usually bellhops, into her room and having sex with them. She eventually committed suicide in the bathtub of her room by slitting her wrists. Her spirit became one of the ghosts trapped in the hotel. Years later, Jack Torrance was hired on as the winter caretaker of the hotel. He brought with him his wife, Wendy and young son, Danny. Danny was gifted with a psychic power known as "shining". He shared this power with hotel's resident chef, Dick Hallorann. Danny received a psychic impression of Room 217 and asked Hallorann about it. Dick knew the history of the room, but didn't want to frighten Danny, so he sternly warned him to keep clear of all the guest rooms - especially Room 217. Whenever Danny came near the room however, he could feel the dark forces of the hotel reaching out to him. In one vision, he saw a fire hose that was mounted outside the room disengage itself from its clip and reach out for him like some sort of serpentine monster. |

I suspect most people will prefer whichever cut they saw first since differences between the two are negligible. I was blown away by an IMAX Laser showing of the theatrical cut and it remains the definitive version for me. Feel similarly about both Hateful Eight and Midsommar.

I have to eventually buy Doctor Sleep, having seen it one time in theaters. It was interesting and I liked that they revisited the Hotel at the end anyway.
The original The Shining is a great, classic horror film. Over the years of watching it many times, it no longer has the fear factor when I first saw it as a tiny kid, but it's still enjoyable to watch. The music in The Shining is incredible towards building the sense of horror and dread. Doctor Sleep's music was good but not quite as effective. |

Me too. What’s your reason though? I don’t dislike the DC but after I watched it I thought there wasn’t really anything significant in it that I wish was in the theatrical cut. Just seemed mostly like scene extensions here and there. One thing I do remember is the scene where they kill the baseball kid was much longer and more disturbing.

Any chance there will eventually be a 3rd Shining movie? Without the
[Show spoiler] , I'm not sure it would be the same. Quote:
What's sad is I can't find a way to buy the full soundtrack anywhere these days. It's been out of print for decades it seems. Thankfully it's on youtube for now. |

The ‘theatrical’ is really the truncated European cut that Kubrick made when he got cold feet about box office. The longer American version is his unmolested vision. I prefer it - more Shining is better than less.
Weirdly, I’ve never found The Shining ‘scary’, more an eerie but seductive dive into the subconscious, kinda like a Lynch film. [Edit: wait, are you talking about Doc Sleep?] Last edited by Drooch; 07-17-2021 at 11:54 PM. |

I like the Director’s Cut a lot, but I think the TC is better in some ways. Better pacing, and that scene where
[Show spoiler] really should’ve stayed cut. Not sure if I have a preference. I think I like both about the same.

The Shining was not terribly popular upon it's U.S. release, due to the slow pace and relative lack of in your face scares. |

All of Kubrick’s films struggle on their release because it takes time for general audiences to realise his genius. My point, however, is that the shorter version is no more beloved than the longer American cut.
