(Ads during pause) Its a recent "feature" they added.

Peacock wants to make it interactive too with trivia sometimes.

Peacock is offered with my internet connection so I have used it a bit. I really liked the Ted TV series and the Chucky one seems ok if there is someone that somehow hasn't seen enough Chucky.

I do enjoy the fact that is something is NEW you get all the ads before the content. I'm loving that. They show a timer so you gat get comfy while you ignore the ads. It's like 3 minutes so you can really microwave popcorn.

I did stream a lot from Tubi recently because they do have most of the shark movies that exist. Some really are fine for watching once just to see them.

I still use Kanopy which my library provides. They went from a simple system of credits to a complicated one but I usually don't use up the credits. Since they renew every month sometimes it's a good trick to use them on things in the leaving soon section.

Yeah, there is a lot to be said for that method for sure.

--- b) even if the device could be updated in theory you then have the economic factor, is it worth paying to make a new version of the app that supports the new streaming (or anything else really) , some of the old devices would have stopped working, some of the old devices might have been decommissioned because the person wanted something better/newer.
3) the article talked about Sony TVs and Apple TV devices. so dongles are not immune. the benefit is you have a choice if you are happy with the TV you can just replace/add an external device. But that does not mean that the dongle or external device won't stop working one day because of planned obsolescence.
Yes, you have a point to be fair. However, the more smart tv gatekeepers force ads and push that side of things, the more it’s in their interests to push for a smart tv solution, a one stop shop if you like.

Subscription streaming keeps finding more ways to suck...just like cable TV did before it.

As usual, I do not share your pessimistic outlook.

TV home screens mostly just promote movies and shows that are available on various streaming and EST services. When they start telling me how to save money on car insurance then I will get annoyed.

Newer disc releases, blu-ray and 4K alike, rarely have those front loaded auto launching movie trailers that were common on so many older disc releases. If these newer disc releases offer trailers at all, they are usually in the extra features section and their presence there does not bother me at all. In this regard, newer disc releases have actually improved as far as shoving ads in our faces goes.
You could also cut the TV off from internet access so it's just a 'dumb' display and this stuff can't be backended into it in any way. I keep mine totally cut off from my home internet. Only my Firestick, phone and computer(s) are on it and I have a very aggressive MAC filter and firewall policy.

Reminds me of when folks would say Closed Circuit TV.

I drive a 2017 CRV and I"m working on resurrecting a 1973 Super Beetle and I love the fact the Beetle has no computers.

"Modern cars are equipped with a network of electronic control units (ECUs), often referred to as computers, to manage various functions. The exact number of ECUs can vary depending on the make and model of the vehicle. However, in a typical modern car, you can expect to find anywhere from 50 to over 100 ECUs. Each ECU is dedicated to a specific task or subsystem, such as engine control, transmission management, safety systems, infotainment, and more."

It's nice to step away from computers even just a little bit. It's not like I'm hooked on my phone because I don't use my phone for much other than TXT.

I don't see why. If the adds are shown by the TV then the TV manufacturer (or app OS) gets the cash from the for the ads, if the ads are from the streaming provider then the streaming provider gets paid for the ads.

Further more even if we assume the cash goes to the same place let's say Joe starts streaming a series on his external device (and there is auto play that continues with the next episode), he goes to bed turns off the TV but forgets to stop and turn off the player, it continues playing episode after episode all night while the TV is off. The streaming provider will still make money from all the ads that played all night long. If it was on the TV the minut e the TV goes off so will teh playback and cash from ads.

My Roku turns itself off shortly after I turn off my TV/ AVR. How does it know?

I leave my TVs connected to the internet for the occasional firmware update, but I can easily disconnect them. I use my Roku when I stream, anyway.

We had a 1969 VW Fastback, no carb, was a direct inject fuel and was controlled by a computer. The PWA was larger than a ATX motherboard.

Samsung and Roku do have their own streaming g services though, as does Amazon. I expect developments there over the coming years. They also have the home page to plaster ads on.

I don't know why you use a Roku when you have a Sony UHDTV with Android Apps. I can connect and Stream to any Service with the Sony Android Apps...Even Apple Streaming!

So for a fairly modest HDD investment, and monthly costs under $100/month one could do a non-raid setup with cloud backups, assuming the availability of fiber internet access.
Have 8 14TB drives in my NAS for a total of 112TB - 14 (RAID 5) = 98TB useable. Have a 9th drive on the shelf in case of a failed drive. Drives are WD Red Plus designed for 24/7/365 NAS use, I only have the NAS on for file transfer or to watch something, otherwise it is in Sleep mode.

UHD Blu-ray DV titles look pretty bad on my setup (front projector) when played via my Sony UBP-X1000, they look somewhat better when played on my Oppo UDP-203. Both players based on MediaTek SoC. They look quite good when played via my Zidoo UHD5000 (here) with the Dolby VS10 Engine engaged. The 5000 is based on the Realtek SoC.

Do not have anything that can match the Oppo for DVD play.

Like many here: Source (Roku, Shield, ATV4K, etc.) → AVR/AVP → Video Display. Mine is like this:

The Roku Ultra allows me to enjoy Dolby Atmos. My Sony X900F TV only has ARC, not eARC, and thus the TV's apps can not output Dolby Atmos to my AVR.

A bit of a sleeper war movie as it may have slipped through the cracks, but I watched Devotion today and was very pleasantly surprised. Based on a true story and a bit formulaic at times, but beautifully shot, well acted, and a strong 5.1 mix. 4K had some jaw dropping shots and scenes. Worth checking out if you come across it.
