It'd be pretty damn funny if Best Buy brought it back. Don't think it'd happen, but it'd be funny.

In September 2023 the nationwide Netflix unlimited Blu-ray/DVD rentals went out of business for the physical media department and Netflix switched to 100% streaming. Just recently in the last month the only remaining store based nationwide renter of 4K Blu-ray, 2K Blu-ray and 480i DVD called REDBOX went under. Several years ago, they had over 42,000 automated machines within 5-minute drive to most locations in all 50 states (where I use to live over a decade ago it took me between 5 to 10 minutes (speed depending on traffic conditions) to get to the closes REDBOX to rent a Blu-ray. Then just recently it was announced that the REDBOX machine count had been reduced from 42,000 to 24,000 before the company filed bankruptcy and shut down. That was a major blow to the rental market for physical media with both Netflix and REDBOX each having several million customers before they both stopped renting physical optical media. Having a REDBOX in 42,000 locations and then only in 24,000 locations made REDBOX the number one renter for local store locations in all 50 states.

I was not aware of Gamefly and DVDinbox offering a similar rental program by mail like Netflix use to offer in 2023. Maybe one day I might try them out after I get through my stack of 4K Blu-ray and 2K Blu-ray store purchased discs. I do not know how many subscribers Gamefly or DVDinbox have, but most likely instead of being in the millions it might only be a few thousand customers or a few hundred customers using their rental program. I hope both companies are a success and remain in the rental business. But it might be another year or two before I decide to try out their rental service, I am back logged on new discs I purchased.

Plane is awesome on 4K disc. She Said is on Peacock, so may give it a test run to see if I like it enough to buy on BD.

I am beyond happy to report that my new TV, the Sony 85" Bravia 9, seems to have arrived safely this afternoon. From just a few initial tests with different inputs, the picture is quite impressive. It is a big improvement over my Sony X900F, which has happily been relocated to its new home.

I do have a little eARC conflict to resolve, but I think I know what I did wrong. I am too exhausted to test my idea until tomorrow.

I was in the ATV app on my ATV4K and it recommended Abigail on Peacock and from the ATV app it played without the 3 minutes of ads before hand.

Nice bug. ! Felt like I got away with something even though I would have ignored the ads.

Glad you finally got your TV so you can enjoy it.

I had eARC problems too. I bought the wrong HDMI cable. It was a one way cable (didn't even know those existed).

After replacing it with a normal two way Ultra High Speed cable the problem was resolved.

Glad you got it intact. I'm jealous! I settled for the 77inC2 only because the price jump from 77 to 83 was not worth it for me!

What is gonna be your first "watch" on the new set!?

Thank you! I am thrilled to finally have it. From purchase to delivery it took 28 days to get one that survived FedEX Freight shipping. Robert at Value Electronics provided excellent customer service throughout the entire process.

I think my eARC issue is due to my using the wrong "monitor output" on my AVR. I have since changed it, but I was too tired last night to do any further testing. Yesterday was a very busy day for me and I pushed myself a little too hard.

The 77" LG C2 is a great TV; you made a very nice choice!

I have not decided what to watch first, but I am open to suggestions. It has to be something that I have on disc, though. I will check how streamed movies look later. I believe that I am now eligible to play with Sony's Bravia Core service, too.

I don't expect to be able to watch a full movie on my new TV until Saturday. Today and the rest of my week is just too hectic. I have about 6 hours worth of appointments and treatment at the hospital on Friday with a lot to do before I can make the trip.

Active HDMI cables have a “source” connector and a “display” connector. A HDMI source can supply the +5VDC needed for the electronics in the source connector.

A FYI, some of the fiber optic HDMI 2.1 cables require more power to operate than most HDMI 2.0 sources can supply. In this case a suitable power inserter will be needed like this one.

Wow, this helps me out big time, but not necessarily in the HDMI department. I have several Ethernet cables running through long distances and it never occurred to me that I could use a signal extender for that, as well. Are there any Ethernet cable extenders that you would recommend to a novice like me?

Look at this table* here. It will tell you the max speed vs length vs cable type. For example, if you are using CAT5e cable with 1000Base-T devices then the longest length should be limited to 100 meters (328').

I have no first hand experience with ethernet extenders or PoE (Power over Ethernet), PoE here.

My LAN below, transfers between computers and NAS’s typically run about 115 MBps (920 Mbps) which is close to the max of a 1Gb LAN.

*Has an error, 100BaseT Ethernet, residential homes should be 1000BaseT Ethernet, residential homes

Well, you learn something new every day. I had no idea one way HDMI cables were a thing.

Always assumed it didn't matter how you connect them.

AudioQuest HDMI cables are typically directional with an arrow indicating the signal flow on each end of the cable.

I have many HDMI cables that are not directional.

The fiber optic ones I have all specify direction.

That is correct. Only passive HDMI that is non directional. Active HDMI are directional, most of them don’t support Arc/eArc

Most of them are fake directional. You can use them either way.
