If you don't want ads then pay extra or just own physical media and forget about ads. I'm glad I like buying physical media.

I never even realized that Mad Magazine didn't have ads when I was young. Didn't know how great it was.

Quoted from Wiki Mad was long noted for its absence of advertising, enabling it to satirize materialist culture without fear of reprisal. For decades, it was the most successful American magazine to publish ad-free,[67] beginning with issue No. 33 (April 1957) and continuing through issue No. 402 (February 2001).

To paraphrase the late comedian Bill Hicks, every word of advertising "is like a turd falling into my drink."

The full quote reads:

"You do a commercial and you are off the artistic roll call for life. You’re another corporate shill, another [whoar] at the capitalist gang bang. Everything you say is suspect, every word that comes out of your mouth is like a turd falling into my drink.”

I still have one of his stand-up routines on CD.

He also said:

"By the way, if anyone here is in advertising or marketing... kill yourself. Thank you. Just a little thought. I'm just trying to plant seeds. Maybe one day, they'll take root. I don't know. You try, you do what you can. Kill yourself. Seriously though, if you are, do. Aaah, no really, there's no rationalisation for what you do and you are Satan's little helpers, okay? Kill yourself, seriously."

The quote goes on for quite a bit longer, but the point was already made.

Some folks really hate ads.

I wonder if VR will make sure you are watching the ads via Eye tracking.

People used to complain when I muted ads but they seem to understand I don't like them generally. I saw a funny one in a hotel the other day and left it on on purpose because it was rather creative.

Yesterday, on a Saturday, my home aide surprised me with a visit and a gift. She brought me one of the cinnamon rolls that this place is renowned for; it was a huge, and delicious, 6" diameter monster! I still have half of it left. It is so rich and very filling.

Random unexpected acts of kindness like this have always amazed me. She drove 20 miles out of her way on her day off just to bring me a cinnamon roll. It really made my day.

Yeah, I'm pretty misanthropic myself, but hearing stories such as the one Vilya has shared do cheer me up a little.

I don't know enough about him to have such a strong negative opinion of him as a person, yet alone a dead one.

In Herman Hesse's novel, Demian, the character Pistorius said: "If you hate a person, you hate something in him that is part yourself." I consider that thought when I find myself hating someone.

To the point at hand, I find advertising to be an increasingly intrusive and irritating scourge. It's why I ditched cable TV a decade ago and if subscription streaming wants to model itself after cable TV then I can just as easily do without it as well.

I don't know about that. Mostly it's dealing with Major Depressive Disorder and anxiety. Makes it hard to love oneself. That and dwelling on bad decisions I've made in the past that I deeply regret.

Well, I took marketing in high school and first semester college. A lot of good people there. Telling them to kill themselves is a douche thing to say.

If I took what a stand up comedian said literally, then I might agree with you.

One of my college friends is a lawyer who started his career by helping single parents get child support from their deadbeat former spouses.

How many times have attorneys been the subject of harsh humor? Like many people I have laughed at jokes describing all manner of ill will towards them. It does not mean that I would really consider a sinking boat full of lawyers to be "a good start."

^My sixth grade teacher absolutely hated these guys; she believed that their slapstick comedy taught children that violence was an acceptable, even fun, way to solve problems.

Comedians often say provocative things to make their point and there's always the risk that some will see their remarks as being in bad taste. I am certain that we could come up with quite a list of comedians that have been considered offensive by someone. For many comedians, the best cows for slaughter are the sacred ones.

Tonight I viewed my first streamed movie on my new TV; I watched my digital copy of:

I immensely enjoyed this film. June Squibb shines in her first starring role at age 93! I will definitely buy the blu-ray when it comes out on Oct. 8th.

As expected, the Sony Bravia 9 did an excellent job making the most of the meager HD bitrate from Vudu (FAH).

Saul was outstanding as well, but in a different way. Gilligan was able to take a tertiary character who was used as a bit of comic relief and somehow build a prequel based on him. It was a much slower build up, but the payoff and final season was some of the best tv I have viewed as there are some episodes that are jaw dropping within their execution.

All too often a show goes out with a whimper (Game of Thrones as an example) but Gilligan was able to stick the landing with the ending of two iconic shows.
