Great news. I mean, even though the original was quite the example of "master-craft" film making & also had tremendous performances I suspect they can do even better with a reboot.

Sweet!

Huge Friday the 13th news this Wednesday morning as “Hannibal” screenwriter Nick Antosca will be penning the new incarnation for director David Bruckner, Platinum Dunes and Paramount Pictures!

The new Friday the 13th will not be found-footage, but could clear up some unanswered questions about Jason Voorhees’ mythology.

Previously, it had been reported that the new Friday the 13th could take place in the 1980′s. In a more recent article, Brad Fuller of Platinum Dunes talked about his hopes for expanding Jason’s mythos and also taking the franchise back to summer camp.

It’s already exciting that it’s to be helmed by Bruckner, best known for The Signal and for one of the more popular V/H/S segments, ‘Amateur Night’, but to get a solid screenwriter in Antosca is beyond exciting. “Hannibal” is one of the best genre network series ever, and took what could have been one of the worst ideas and turned it into a television revelation. I’m not exactly sure how much credit Antosca gets for “Hannibal”, but he’s part of a team that did something unique and special, which is all I want from the next Friday the 13th.

Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller of Platinum Dunes are producing.

Yeah, IMDb has him listed as a co-producer. He has written some episodes for Teen Wolf, Last Resort, and Believe though.

Found footage Friday the 13th,forget it.This was the original idea/rumor from the start and it looks to be true all along and with the director of V/H/S it is a no doubt true. Hannibal writer or not,who wants to watch a Friday the 13th found footage movie? As a long time fan and growing up watching these, the only way to go is traditional and give it 3D treatment like part 3 which at the time, was the highest grossing Friday movie. Be prepared to be let down fans, unless you are new to the series and like found footage garbage.

It's not found footage. The director himself has confirmed this numerous times. I don't know why some sites are still reporting this.

Speaking today with ShockTillYouDrop.com, producer Brad Fuller has begun to pull back the curtain of secrecy surrounding the next big screen Friday the 13th sequel, set for a May 13, 2016 release. Although the project was previously rumored to embrace a “found footage” aesthetic, Fuller explains that plans have now changed.

“That was a road that we went down and tried to figure out,” Fuller tells STYD. “Ultimately, I think Michael, Drew and I felt that we couldn’t figure that out, so we kind of jettisoned that whole notion and we had to start over. We’re in the latter phases of that starting over and hopefully we’re getting a script in the next month or two, and we’ll go back to Crystal Lake.”

One of the more popular entries in the slasher genre, the first Friday the 13th was released in 1980 and followed a series of brutal murders of teen counselors at Camp Crystal Lake. The killer was ultimately revealed to be Pamela Voorhees, a mother whose son, Jason, drowned in the lake years earlier due to the negligence of the camp’s staff. As the cinematic series progressed, Jason himself became the franchise’s iconic hockey mask-wearing, machete-wielding killer.

The Friday the 13th franchise currently consists of ten original “solo” films, the 2003 crossover Freddy vs. Jason, and, most recently, the 2009 reboot. There was also a short-lived television series that, despite its title, was unconnected to the plot of the film franchise.

Set to be directed by V/H/S helmer David Bruckner, the new Friday the 13th will feature a screenplay by “Hannibal” co-producer Nick Antosca.

“At the end of the day, those movies are so fantastic because Jason Voorhees is such a dynamic presence and people love to see him do what he does well,” Fuller continues. “We hope to put Jason in a situation where he’s able to do that again, and it doesn’t feel like you’re seeing the same thing over and over.”

Michael Bay and Andrew Form are also producing the new film through their Platinum Dunes, which also produced the 2009 film.

Check out the full conversation with Fuller over at ShockTillYouDrop.com.

I was a fan of the 2009 release, so I look forward to seeing how this develops. It could slide off the rails pretty quickly but I'm hoping for the best.

Glad that it isn't found footage anymore. Back to basics please. Jason, teens and the 80's.

Screenwriter says this isn't a sequel to the 2009 film:

How hard is it to make a damn Jason film??? That we have to wait years to decades for a new one just sucks for the fans.

I think the producers are over thinking themselves. They keep trying to find a gimmick.

Teens. Crystal Lake. Boobs. Death. Pot. Rain. Boobs. Death. Final Girl showdown.

There is a simplicity that is why the original 8 just worked, for the most part.

When they started going to space or New York, making Jason a body jumping demon....it drove the fans away.

Stick with what works Paramount.
