About a 6-to-1 ratio, then. I was guessing closer to 4-to-1, but then again I might be an outlier in being just as excited for the Archives box as the Blu-ray box.

So jealous of those who have the BD set. End of Eva is my favorite animated film. I wish it was available separately. I can't find the collection for under $400+

This is probably a really stupid question, but assuming NGE ever gets released on blu-ray in the states, who would be in charge of distribution? I know Funimation has the rights to the rebuild films, but the series was released by the now defunct ADV and the films were put out by Manga who seem to be as much of a shell of a company as Media Blasters nowadays. So basically my question is: what is the current situation for rights and distribution in the US for the TV and original films?

I can see Sentai getting it, I doubt it'll get anywhere outside of Sentai or FUNi as they'd have the most money to wave at it (maybe Nozomi/RS does too but they don't seem interested) |

I would love if Aniplex released it because they would absolutely treat the release with the kid-gloves it deserves: we wouldn't have to worry about brightness, banding, recompression, cramming nine episodes onto a disc or cheap cardboard packaging like we would if Funimation or Sentai put it out.
So what if you'll have to pay $300 for it? |

Also, 3 years ago I probably wouldn't have mind the cost for something special like this box set, but given how the Canadian dollar has plummeted in the past year, I need to be more selective with my purchases than ever. |

Aniplex releases are pretty much perfect for me as far as domestic releases go; the only thing more preferable would be if I can import a higher-quality English-friendly version directly from Japan. As Thomas Guycott said, AoA are generally the Best-in-Class for PQ with US domestic releases. And, I actually prefer sub-only releases because I'm a strict sub-only viewer, so for me dubs are not needed nor even wanted - they're mainly just a waste of disc space that could be used for higher bit-rate video tracks instead. Plus, the lack of dubs is not just an AoA thing - Sentai for one is releasing more and more sub-only titles now. I also never watch any extras, so if Aniplex doesn't provide English subtitles for their extras, it's no loss for me. And when they bring over a direct import version release, AoA oftentimes includes translation booklets. So, there's lots for me to like about Aniplex...

I hope its not Funimation, they seem to be going in a downward spiral. Aniplex would be ideal for EVA. As others said, you wouldn't have to worry about them screwing with the picture or cramming a bunch of episodes on one disc. I would happily pay Aniplex prices for one of the anime classics, as long as its not $1000.

For those curious like myself here's the actual difference between Disc 6 (Death & Rebirth) and Disc 8 (Revival of Evangelion)
I tried popping it into Screenshot Comparison.com but that wasn't happening (and those always end up being dead links really quickly anyway) DISC 6: DEATH [Show spoiler] DISC 8: REVIVAL (DEATH(true)²) [Show spoiler] I kind of like both, mainly because I like older movies kind of having a beaten down, dark "older film look" with sort of a theatrical feel which gets lost in HD transfers which Disc 6 has to an extent. Not that I wish more transfers look as poor as the Disc 6 Death/Rebirth does- it's just kind of nice to have it alongside a proper, good transfer. |

It could be nice if AoA got it, but they'd gimp us on physical extras yet again. FUNimation would probably put out some not so good CE unless they let the person who did the FMA CE handle it, and I question how the video quality and subtitles would be. Sentai meanwhile, that would be the best if you want the extras ADV has the rights to on there. If there is one title they'd treat very well, it's Eva. They owe a lot to that show.
Also Aniplex getting this will never happen. Aniplex=Gets Aniplex stuff only, and new stuff at that. They've already said no to older titles such as Rurouni Kenshin TV. (And yes I know there's been exceptions. They got God Eater which is Bandai. They also got Bakemonogatari, while distributed by Aniplex in Japan, Kodansha was the one who held international rights.) Color correction in the bottom shot is really bad actually, with colors clipping like crazy (like the sharp glow around the sun instead of the soft fade) and resulting detail loss. The water is just a mushy peach shade instead of bathed in a golden glow like the top shot. Last edited by Pyoko; 09-04-2015 at 07:34 PM. |

It's actually been quite a while since I've watched the original series; I've now made it through the first two discs.
What I really had forgotten about this series is how different the styles are between episodes due to the different animation directors. The Takeshi Honda episodes are definitely the stand-outs to me so far. Anyway, overall, I'm quite happy with what I've seen of the Blu-rays so far. Other than some minor grievances with the packaging (mostly just how impractical it is), which is a different aspect entirely, it seems like a top notch release. |
