The standard is HDR10 in the UHD BD spec, DV is optional so what Kino did is inexcusable

Indeed. There's absolutely no excuse for HDR10 presentations to have issues like we're seeing here and on some other releases. If HDR10 is done properly, it should produce an outstanding HDR presentation.

Obviously some people are content with whatever they are given, and not everyone will notice these issues. There are some that expect better from this format, because we know it can be better. If you want to give this a pass, fine, but don't mock others for not willing to do so.

I've bought this film several times before on both DVD and blu-ray. I own the Arrow and Shout blu-rays already. So the point of this is it's supposed to be an upgrade. Yet it has issues that neither of my other blu-rays have.

Does anyone know if Best Buy is going to be stocking this? It doesn't show as available anywhere near me.

That’s actually where I think the problems are coming in. Labels doing “auto-encodes” for BD-100s assuming that there will be enough bitrate for everything without needing to make manual fine tuning adjustments. And then, for whatever reason, the encoders occasionally shit the bed. The blocky segments of Total Recall are a perfect example of this. Sure, the Dolby Vision encode can be perfectly fine. But realistically, both the HDR-10 and Dolby encodes need to both be properly QC’d.

Bluray will never be better than the codec, color range and resolution allow is to be. That is all I'm saying.

So the Blu-Ray is a new transfer, but does it also suffer from the same issues the 4K disc does? In other words, should I have held onto the Scream Blu? I still have the really old MGM Blu. TIA.

Studio Canal's THE FOG and THE DEER HUNTER both come to mind. Both have some pretty horrific issues when played in HDR-10 that are cleaned up considerably when played back in Dolby Vision.

Chris
Some of these don’t even have DV but the HDR10 encode is still bad:

All the Halloween 4K’s by Shout too, their They Live, Prince of Darkness and Weathering With You 4K’s are encoded in the wrong colors as well (something not even DV can alleviate), a bunch of other Studio Canal releases as well actually, like Total Recall, the first 3 Rambo’s, Le Cercle Rouge, Escape From New York. Lionsgate also used exact ports of some of Studio Canal’s discs so they have the same issues (such as Total Recall). Saving Private Ryan is another. The Silence of the Lambs (also from Kino) has the wrong colors during the first 20min. I’m sure I’m missing others but can’t remember them off the top of my head.

It’s a pretty widespread problem. But people keep buying them so these companies have no incentive to fix anything or improve their quality control. The only way they’ll start making a better effort to check the quality of the final product is if it hurts their profits (i.e. people stop preordering and buying everything that gets announced on 4K without knowing whether the disc is actually good).

I am hope you don't buy 28 Days Later when its released on 4K UHD.

Why should I chill ?
My opinion is HDR10 is crap compared to Dolby Vision , I changed my whole system from TV , 4K player to receiver to upgrade from HDR10 and have no regrets .
Superior picture all way around

I got Silence of the Lambs on Black Friday, but this was nowhere to be found. None in the area had it either.

That’s kind of the problem… because of those compression errors I’d be hard pressed to call this an ‘upgrade’ at all. I think the MGM blu-ray is better overall.

I'm frankly not as technical as most of you guys, so to me, it's 4K then it's an upgrade.

Lol. Wish that was always true.

Also, it wouldn’t hurt to look more into it to understand it. You’re basically wasting money by buying something more expensive that is not an upgrade. You’d get better quality from the cheaper, standard blu-ray.

It’s true 4K can look amazingly good… when done right. Unfortunately that isn’t the case here.

I will learn more on it. I've self taught myself over the last 2 or three years about TV's and picture quality and such. I'm just not that deep in to it to worry about "compression".
