If only you had gigabit internet service your streaming quality would be about 11 times better.

can you tell us what service you use that can stream at 90Mbps?

the problem with your stats are

1) if someone is streaming with a speed test in your area with twice or half your speed there won't be any difference. because no one offers anything near 90Mbps

2) your DL speed is actually lower than upload because no one is uploading but downloading and it is the only one important for streaming from a service provider

3) https://www.bandwidthplace.com/artic...-united-states

Fixed Broadband: In Q3 2023, the median download speed of fixed broadband in the United States was 213.75 Mbps
so your stats are nothing special. Most in the US (and probably everyone here) have a much better connection.

I have fiber internet, and get 400Mbps download and upload.

None of these streamers will provide you anything close to even 50 Mbps. This is an issue on their end. They intentionally limit bitrates. I don't even think they provide 30 Mbps most of the time.

Bravia Core from what I understand is the best at up to 80 Mbps. Although I haven't used it myself, and I'm not sure how frequently it gets there.

A number of 4k discs will go up to 150 Mbps in short bursts. The highest that I have currently for an average is about 110 for Groundhog day, although that includes all the different audio streams.

The highest average bitrate for video I have is Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio at 95 Mbps.

People shouldn't be name calling for having different preferences, if that's what is happening.

If you really wanted the best streaming experience, what you would need is better internet (optional for remote access) a better router or wired preferably, and plex/jellyfin and rip 4k discs.

That's assuming someone is most interested in getting the best quality.

Overall though, no matter how someone watches their movies and TV shows, there is always going to be some kind of compromise. Whether it's quality, cost or availability.

Availability: There's plenty of stuff that's not on disc obviously. There's also stuff that's not streaming anywhere. And you can pay more for more streaming services to get access to more shows/movies. Discs will obviously tend to be for slightly older shows. But we also are able to keep discs, whereas a lot of streaming shows get rotated.

Quality: Obviously this will vary per person and per content. Different people care about different video issues. Like I think I care more about aliasing issues, whereas if things are colored a little bit wrong, I'm probably not going to notice as much. I like to have the best versions, but there's definitely things I wouldn't notice.

Personally there are times where I think streaming looks fine, and there are times where I notice crushed blacks that I just haven't seen while watching 4k discs.

Cost: A single streaming service is pretty cheap, but if it doesn't have what you want, that might mean buying from Apple TV+ or subscribing to another service.

All of these factors are dependent on what matters to you as a viewer.

If you're someone who likes to watch Breaking Bad 15 times a year at home, buying the discs is going to be pretty cheap, and high quality.

If you're someone who likes to watch a brand new movie every single night, and you don't care about quality too much, then streaming services just can't be beat. Unless you're reasonably wealthy and really want a giant shelf full of movies you never watch again.

If you're someone who wants to watch their favorite movies at the absolute best quality, then you're going to need to get those on 4k discs. Maybe that will change in the future.

Everyone is different. Most people seem to be pretty content with the quality and access that streaming services provide, and that's totally good for them, especially because it's pretty affordable for most people.

It’s not about preferences, it’s about Alchav making false claim after false claim, despite being presented with evidence to the contrary every single time.

The problem is speed test may only test between the tester and their ISP which does not tell you anything about the bandwidth between you and the CDN that you may be streaming from. Have tried to make this point when I started this thread almost 6 years ago.

In my recent test (below) I selected a server in NY city because that is more real than my local server in Hendersonville, NC. AFAIK the Apple TV4K is the only consumer streamer device that will indicate the bandwidth between you and the CDN while streaming content. I did include this data point in my table that I have posted here, several times.

absolutely. there are many variables, that is also why he got three different results in the three tests he did. To use the highway analogy if I go towards down town or towards the border (oposit directions same highway) the traffic and my speed won't necessarily be the same and if I am going DT in the morning rush hour the traffic will be heavy while if I go DT in the evening it won't be an issue.

OT. Do you plan to attend CEDIA 2024 next month in Denver? If so, check in on Sony projectors, rumor has it they may have some new models.

I went to my local Walmart disc shopping. The big aisle display was gone. Movie section getting smaller again. Ouch.

Alien: Romulus was epic in Dolby Cinema - highly recommended. The film rocked, too.

For the record almost no one is "stuck" watching discs because we have both physical and digital movies to access.

Here's some of my movies on disc...

I saw it Sunday in BigD. I was actually a little disappointed with it, but I had high expectations. I love Fede Alvarez as a director and the original stuff he did, as well as the parts of the Alien Isolation game, were excellent. But way too much fan service and callbacks. It actually took me out of the movie when they popped up, especially the
[Show spoiler]"Get away from her, you *****" line
. I wish he had just done an adaption of Alien Isolation since Ripley's daughter is the main character. Easily the best sequel since Aliens but just too derivative to stand on its own in my opinion.

Yeah, that line was cringeworthy.

Not as bad as “Do your thing, cuz” in Texas Chainsaw 3D, but not far off.

Last night I used a heating pad for back pain in the home theater, I got a unintended massage from watching UHD Blu-ray of Lucy. One of these days I am going to check that sound track to see just how low in frequency some of the sounds go.
