I enjoy remakes, reduxes, etc. The more the merrier regardless if inferior or not. The naysayers should keep in mind that remakes don’t erase the originals from existence, and can encourage to revisit or appreciate old movies more.

I think Hollywood's approach to remakes is slightly backward. They should focus on movies that had good ideas at their core but didn't quite work the first time around and put fresh eyes on it. But generally speaking, I agree with you.

That ain't a hard feat to accomplish, I swear the dialogue in PR was worse than any dubbed Kaiju movie.

I think Godzilla KOM is a little better, the guy from its always sunny is really annoying and all the Ron Pearlman stuff is cringe, the kaiju stuff is gorgeous but KOM is a little more fun. They're both fun and pretty awful, I can't choose.

Going KOM.

Dragged Across Concrete is the best film to come out this year. And even then it was just okay.

2019 has had some exciting releases (Rambo: Last Blood - 3 From Hell) but overall the films themselves were just okay and it's been a mediocre year so far.

Midsommar was a huge huge step down from Hereditary. The fact that it's getting a directors cut is kinda silly. The film was way too long as it stood in its theatrical release.

That's funny, I thought Midsommar was superior to Hereditary in almost every way.

I treat remakes the same way as I treat originals for the most part, with the added debate of the remake's merit in the company of it's original counterpart. Even if a remake isn't as good as it's og, I can still appreciate it on it's individual terms.

Where a lot of people get mad because a remake is different from, and not faithful to, the original, I usually think it makes more sense for it to be different.

I was being a grouchy old man a few years back, and complaining about all of the remakes. And then my son pointed out how many of the films I liked a few decades back, were remakes of much earlier films, too. And yet I thought the remakes were great, too, if not even sometimes better to me, personally, than the originals. Films I really enjoyed, like "Scarface" and "The Thing" were updated (for their time) versions of much earlier films. And the older guys then would gripe about how graphic and excessive "Scarface" or "The Thing" were compared to the old movies. Yet, I didn't care, I liked the newer ones better. Also, a lot of filmmakers borrowed, or outright stole, from each other (witness De Palma stealing from Hitchcock; then, giving it his own, updated spin).

The point is, I shouldn't be so hard on the remakes and the derivatives, because it has always been that way.

But I actually like a remake that is different. That's when you really can make a distinction, and consider both the original and the remake as standalone films on their own merits.

Like I was so offended that they were remaking Dario Argento's "Suspiria", and saw no need for that. But what Luca Guadagnino ended up doing was so drastically different that I wound up liking the remake, too, for entirely different reasons, as it was an entirely different film.

The bigger joke is WB marketing how he went true method actor for the role which was basically a glorified cameo lol.

As usual, I think it's way too early to say anything with much value. The year is not even over and a lot of films haven't had proper releases and many have only had festival screenings that can be hard to get to. It's best to evaluate a year and its films a time after without any hurry.

I've seen 35 films from 2019 and 5 out of those were good. It's not a huge amount films to have seen, but I plan to see a lot more, of course. And 5 good films is a decent start for me. I think it looked about the same way last year for me, now I can even make a top 25 with good stuff from 2018.

But sure, one can evaluate the year so far. I hope you will see a lot more to your liking. There is a lot to explore.

Rewatched Child's Play (2019) for the third time, and yup. Still better than the original. Come @ me, OG fans.
