Not that I actually know anything, but rather I'm a natural pessimist about streaming deals precluding proper Blu-ray releases outside of Japan. "Exhibit A" in my mind would be Little Witch Academia TV.

As long as it's English-friendly like the previous three releases, I'm willing to wait

Man that looks nice. Do you know if there's any difference between that and the one on cdjapan? I've had my eye on it for ages, but it's just so pricey

I'm wondering now what's exclusive about the aniplex one? The aniplex one is more expensive so I'm assuming there's something.

The CDJapan listing is for the digipak you see front and center in the picture.

There's the Amazon JP store listing that comes with the soundtrack vinyl.

And lastly there's the Aniplex + (plus) website exclusive (that's the edition I got) that comes with the two books you see at it's left/right flank, a freestyle rap OST CD, poster, and the vinyl that comes with the Amazon JP exclusive. I took pictures of it all when I got it, let me track them down so I can show you in better detail.

EDIT:

It appears I've deleted those pictures. I'll try digging through the original post and provide it later

Man those other editions sound really nice, they're all out of print now though except the standard one. I really want that vinyl soundtrack...

How substantial are the books, many pages? Love a good art book
Wondering if the mark-up would be worth it on ebay or something
Not really interested in the cd or poster though

Now, without further ado, let's dive into this. Originally, I was going to buy CDJapan's listing of this box set, but come to find out - there were three different versions of this item available (that I could see) One is the regular box set that can be bought from any Japanese retailer. Another is a box set that comes with a vinyl soundtrack that's exclusive to Amazon JP, and there's Aniplex Plus' edition that comes with a whole bunch of goodies. I bet you can all guess which one I opted for, considering I had to go through White Rabbit Express...

Yes. I bought the Aniplex Plus Limited Edition release of Devilman: Crybaby

Upon opening the box and seeing the box set, I immediately grinned

Here's the vinyl that's exclusive to either the Amazon JP release or the Aniplex Plus website:

Alright, now we enter the Aniplex Plus goodies that are only available through their release. First up is the storyboard book:

Back Cover
forensics jobs salary

Next we have the Key Animation Book;

Putting the two together recreates the pivotal standoff scene where Akira holds his unconscious loved one in his arms while preventing his best friend from killing her by resisting a clean shot off from his pistol.

Next we have the Freestyle Rap CD;

And last, but CERTAINLY not least... We have the release poster...

Thank you all for taking the time to look at this! For those of you who might be curious, this Blu Ray release does come with English subtitles but Japanese audio only.

Also I'm dumb, looks like it is still available on aniplex, need to use proxy shipping though... I've used them a few times, but I hate you never know exactly what the shipping is gonna cost before it arrives, always ends up being more than expected

Back on topic though, I emailed AllTheAnime and they said I'll still be getting my Ultimate Edition order, even though I'm overseas, I'm relieved to hear that.

Now I'm wondering why those other people had theirs cancelled though

WARNING: GIANT WALL OF TEXT INCOMING!

I just received my copy of the Japanese "Standard Edition" Blu-ray box set this afternoon and have spent several hours getting fresh BDInfo scans for the 10 discs' contents. Based on what I've seen on their BDInfo readouts combined with knowing what GKIDS and the other English-language licensees have announced as being included on the "Ultimate Edition" set, I think that the compression situation vis-a-vis having "only" six primary content discs (excluding the additional five that are duplicates but merely with a different English dub) may not be as bad as I and many others feared.

Here's a breakdown of the contents for the Japanese Eva TV box set, excluding Discs #6 and #7 which are dedicated to the theatrical versions of "Death and Rebirth" and "The End of Evangelion" of which both are not included in the GKIDS set in favor of only having "Revival of Evangelion":

Discs 1-5:
30x episodes on 6 discs (Ep. 1-26: 609 minutes / Ep. 21'-24': 110 minutes = 719 minutes total)
- 1080p 4:3 "pillarboxed" AVC video @ 35 Mbps average
- 16-bit LPCM 5.1 and 2.0 audio @ 6 Mbps total (4.5 Mbps + 1.5 Mbps)

Disc 8:
Revival of Evangelion (160 minutes)
- 1080p 1.77:1 AVC video @ 31 Mbps
- 16-bit LPCM 5.1 and 2.0 audio @ 6 Mbps total (4.5 Mbps + 1.5 Mbps)

Disc 9:
The End of Evangelion: "Video Format" version (90 minutes)
- 1080i 1.77 AVC video @ 35 Mbps
- 16-bit LPCM 2.0 audio @ 1.5 Mbps (Note: no 5.1 mix exists for this version)

Genesis 0:0 & 0:0' promotional videos (57 minutes total)
- 1080i 4:3 "pillarboxed" AVC video @ 18 Mbps
- 16-bit LPCM 2.0 audio @ 1.5 Mbps

Music videos from the "Neon Genesis Evangelion Music DVD" (21 minutes)
- 1080i 4:3 "pillarboxed" AVC video @ 18 Mbps
- 16-bit LPCM 5.1 and 2.0 audio + 5.1 karaoke @ 11 Mbps total (4.5 Mbps + 1.5 Mbps + 4.5 Mbps)

A bunch of other shorter bonus features that I don't want to bother enumerating separately (~50 minutes)
- 1080i 4:3 "pillarboxed" AVC video @ 18 Mbps
- 16-bit LPCM 2.0 audio @ 1.5 Mbps

Disc 10:
"Animatic" versions of Ep. 9, 15, 18-26, and part of 25' Air (~250 minutes)
- 1080i 4:3 "pillarboxed" AVC video @ 20 Mbps
- 16-bit LPCM 2.0 audio @ 1.5 Mbps

My thoughts:

The menu system for each of the 10 discs takes a fully mind-boggling 7 GB apiece due to having 30 minutes' worth of background animation / scene transitions. That makes the effective size of the set's actual on-disc content calculate to 350 GB instead of the nominal 420 GB we originally started with. Once we also subtract the 30 GB that the original versions of 21-24 used, the remaining 27 GB of content that Disc #6 (Death & Rebirth) used, and the remaining 24 GB of content that Disc #7 (EoE) used we're left with a total file size of ~270 GB for Episodes 1-20, 21'-24', 25-26, Revival of Evangelion, the "Video Format" version of EoE, and all the remaining bonus materials.

On the audio front, since we know that GKIDS is using losslessly compressed DTS-HD 5.1 MA (presumably at 16-bit to match the JP box set's bit depth) for the Japanese and English audio tracks, I believe it would be safe to assume that both languages would fit in the same 6 Mbps that the uncompressed 16-bit LPCM Japanese 5.1 & 2.0 audio tracks used so no further adjustments need to be made for my set of calculations.

My key point is this: Assuming that the asset size of the menus for the GKIDS set isn't nearly as wasteful as the 7 GBs per disc that the Japanese release used and all discs are dual-layer BD-50s, it's quite possible that they wouldn't have to lower the video bitrate by much (if at all) in order to fit everything on the six discs that are allotted for the version using the "official" Netflix/VSI dub + bonus materials.

I'd buy something like that, except for the minor problem that people would think I'm wearing "D-Type" equipment instead of the standard plug suit.

Hows the quality of it? I've seen some of those in the style of InuYasha's robe of the fire-rat and Sesshomaru's armor and was always curious about them. They're a little too in your face for my liking/style but they're still pretty cool for the price.
