Has the classic Paramount Logo ever been properly restored and included in another 4K release? It looks unusually crummy here...

Multiple print damage spots on the UHD disc at 1 hour 41 minutes mark when Jack and Rose sees the iceberg scratch the ships side. Not a complaint at all. it's barely noticeable in motion. And I like these imperfections. It reminds me that we are still watching celluloid, not digital video.

Is that grab from the UHD? Do me a favour, can you cue up the 2D BD at the same spot and see if the same damage is present? I'd do it myself but I've got a power cut here at the moment!

Thanks. So one scratch is there while the other is not. Still wanna see the 2D BD tho as the above is just the left eye of the 3D version with the accordant conversion offset of certain parts of the picture, so that blip by the wires may have been erased as part of that workflow.

Nice one Riddhi, thanks for that. Not that I expect anyone to go frame by frame to dissect the entire movie looking for stray dirt/damage, but it wouldn't be a shock if artefacts elsewhere were also present in the exact same places on both the old BD and new UHD with no 'exclusive' damage to one or the other version. That would show beyond doubt that the 4K UHD really is from the same 4K master as prepped for the 2012 version, with the 3D having its own unique workflow because of the conversion i.e. if the damage got in the way of converting something like the scratch by the wires then it got removed.
What I found interesting about The Abuse is that the 4K UHD (stream) has some different artefacts to the Lowry theatrical HDTV transfer, like scratches in some shots that aren't on the other. |

I couldn't tell you off hand the scene and maybe it's always been there but I noticed an odd one where Jack and Rose are running towards the camera towards the end of the movie and Leo's face looked really bizarre. I have a feeling they CG'ed a stunt person's face or, AI i just being AI. Maybe it was always there but that really jumped out of me as looking really cartootnish and odd.

My earlier posts about the Titanic 4K release were based on the 4K Web version that I watched, which I have since learned was a compressed one and the grain was probably removed among other enhancements to make it work for the web/streaming limitations. The UHD disc encode has almost none of those problems. I believed that there wouldn't be much difference between the streaming/web copy and the disc encode. I was wrong. Most of the artifacts, including the excessively clean appearance, was a non-issue on the disc version.
I am watching the UHD disc version now and I was surprised to find that a) It's not grain free or smooth (grain is visible on every single frame) b) The excessive sharpened look is gone. It's sharp, but not "burn my eyes" sharp like the Web version I watched before. c) The AI artefacts are much less visible on the disc, except a few shots. Even then it's not super apparent anymore. d) I applied the colour and contrast of the 70mm prints (thanks to Dalemac) on the UHD (increased the brightness and contrast and colour without drowning out the details) and WOW. It's like I am watching a pristine film print; like I am back in 1998. I'd advice - please don't return your discs based on my past comments. This UHD disc (not the compressed web version) is solid work, even if not perfect. The grain has clearly been managed, but it's still very much visible. The disc's encode still has a lot of of the organic look left, not destroyed as many here have feared. And no, James Cameron or Lightstorm did not bribe me or anything. ![]() With my custom 70mm colour correction, it looks awesome to me. Of course, this is my ideal viewing from now on. Others' mileage may vary. But this is exactly how the images now appear to me when I watch the movie.
