i think you and I have been on a similar trajectory as my first FP unit was a 3 gun SONY CRT about 25 years ago when my wife and setup our first home together.. I had been assuming that the next upgrade would be to JVC laser tech until the NP came into my wheelhouse...As i watched last night's hockey game in glorious 4K and 133 inches, I realized that this setup is still putting an enormous grin on my face and that the money is better put towards taking the family on another European holiday next spring... I have a feeling that this special price point might be the new ceiling as they clear out the last of the lamp based units... |

They still have room to grow as a 3 laser setup removes the need for a color filter to get full gamut.
Some of the UST projectors already use 3 Laser setups (Hisense PX3-PRO Projector) so it's definitely on the road map. They have not run out of ways to improve them. Will they get better AND cheaper ... that's complicated but in the long term I imagine they will. Last edited by bhampton; 12-05-2024 at 04:02 PM. |

Every ballpark has its own special ground rules, every cinema auditorium has it's special dimensions and every HT has it's compromises...
When i think of what I want - to sit close enough to an image that takes up my entire field of vision in scope and have my front soundstage come from the screen- I have no choice but to go with a DIY SPANDEX screen... while it wasn't a priority consideration, it doesn't hurt that this is also the dirt cheap solution.. lol.. I've never had as impressive an audio experience as I have with an A/T screen... but I've yet to come across an A/T material that I couldn't easily makeout the perforations on... The combination of the JVC and SPANDEX means a less sharp and bright picture... The former may be alleviated by going native 4K as opposed to an eshifter... the latter I'm more than OK with as I'm in a completely blacked out cave..Spandex only has a .7 gain which I actually love as the methods most screen manufacturers use to increase gain introduce anomalies that I'm sensitive to.... so I'm reticent to fix what isn't currently broken..lol.. |

I wanted my mother to get an Indiana Jones widescreen VHS when we were at the mall, but she told me it wouldn't work on our TV, and I believed her.

Here in the UK, I don't remember there being an Indiana Jones VHS set in widescreen - I would have snapped that up for sure. To be honest, there weren't really all that many releases in widescreen. It was only when DVD was launched that we then had the opportunity to watch a movie in its proper ratio - although I still recall some very early DVD's which offered a pan and scan version on one side, and the widescreen presentation on the other.

![]() While at university, My girlfriend and I lived in an apartment literally across the street from a BLOCKBUSTER... It used to make her absolutely crazy that we couldn't rent new releases from there as I would insist on waiting between 3 to 6 months to drive miles out of our way to rent the LD from an asian supermarket...Thank God she never complained about the black bars like some of my friends that soon became ex-friends.... actually that might have saved us both a lot of aggro... ![]() |

The Longest Day was re-released on VHS in a widescreen edition by Fox in the early 90's - I think it may have been to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the D-Day landings, but not 100% sure on that. However I did buy it, and quickly binned my awful pan and scan tape. Talking of black bars, I believe the BBC experimented with widescreen transmissions in the late 60's and 70's whereby they showed a small number of films in their original CinemaScope ratio - I personally don't recall this, but it's something I read somewhere. I gather the continuity announcer had to warn people not to adjust their TV sets. Last edited by CV19; 12-06-2024 at 12:20 PM. |

Because I was so heavily into Laserdisc's, I can barely recall anything about letterboxed VHS and it's market penetration (or lack there of). I know of the format, because a well meaning friend bought me a copy of Pulp Fiction. Of course it was long after I had already purchased my LD copy.
Other than disc flipping, there was little technical reason to shift my buying habits away from LD when DVD came on the scene. Even though I purchased the first PANASONIC player available, I continued to rent and buy LD for some time depending on which version of a title was more readily available. Actually more titles became available day and date with VHS when DVD came along. If memory serves, it wasn't until DVDs started being released with anamorphic enhancement and I discovered how to do the "squeeze" trick on my SONY 3 gun projector that the format represented enough of a technilogical advantage for me to shift completely away from LD.. |
