The Godfather collection doesn't stick out like a sore thumb It's in a regular blue keepcase.

The only Blu-ray that I have a problem with things lining up are "Band of Brothers" because of its tin set, "Gone with the Wind" and "Casablanca" sets because of how they are packaged and I think "Snow White" since it used a DVD case. But also anime Blu-ray sets also vary in size. Personally I don't mind... I'm beyond trying to keep things look good on my shelf, my difficulty is trying to find a shelf suitable for my collection.

Snow White was available in both a DVD case and a Blu-ray case. Sorry you picked up the DVD vase version. Mine is in a standard Blu-ray case.

Angry Kagemusha Defective?

I purchased Kagemusha on Blu-ray back in August and I just got around to watching it today. At 1 hour and 20 minutes into the movie, it freezes. I ejected it and tried again, but it did the same thing each time. I assumed I had a bad disc and took it back to Barnes & Noble to exchange for a new copy. As soon as I returned home, I put in the new copy and started it on the chapter entitled "An education in being Shingen". Once again something happens at around 1 hour and 20 minutes. The only difference is instead of freezing, the movie skips a few seconds and continues playing.

I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this. Is there a known defect in this particular Criterion Blu-ray? I just find it strange that it's happened with two different copies.

Sorry to hear that, but I've had no problems at all playing "Kagemusha" on my 40GB PS3 or Momitsu region-free player.

I've had freez issues with both Playtime and A Christmas Tale. Had to skip several chapters. The disc came straight out of the shrinkwrap, so scratches were not the cause. And unfortunately Criterion doesn't support their audience outside of America. What a shame.

Hehe...are a few of you taking the "why these upcoming Criterion titles are not released on Blu-ray but only on DVD" to the criterionforum.org site? Hehe... Similar to auteurs thread, interesting comments.

I've had no freezing issues with any of my Criterion discs, including both Kagemusha and Playtime. I run mine on a standalone Sony player and a PS3.

This is the first time it's ever happened to me with a Criterion Blu-ray and second time in general (American Gangster did something similar). I'm using my 80GB PS3 and I also tried it on a newer Insignia player. I was just wondering if this was a common issue with this particular title because it happened with two different copies (one purchased in August and the other I exchanged for yesterday). A friend told me that the error might be happening at the point where the movie changes layers on the disc. Just a thought...doesn't really solve the problem.

Now, I'm debating whether or not I should exchange it again at B&N or contact someone at Criterion. Is it even worth the trouble? It's only a minor glitch at this point, but it bugs me nonetheless.

Default The Third Man blu-ray replacement case

I ordered the blu-ray replacement case for 'The Third Man' back in October and am still waiting for it. Does anyone know when this will become available?
Criterion hasn't answered my email inquiry, so any information that can be provided will be appreciated.
Thank you.

Exclamation Criterion Collection Sets!

Good day everyone, bpmford here. I am a Custom Cover designer and have made various replacement covers for Blu-ray movies. My most recent set for the James Bond films has gotten members wanting something similar for the Criterion movies. Click THIS link to get an idea of what I mean with my Bond Set.

Since this studio's covers are plaigued by cheap cardboard cases and odd styled clear cases, I am thinking of doing a collection set of custom covers for Criterion.

Many collectors of Criterion movies would love to see sets done for these, So I hae decided to do so, in both 15 an 25mm 6-disc cases...

The problem however, is that as you can see on this page HERE, there are (in the US) 30 currently released Criterion moves, with another 12 slated for release the first part of this year.

Now, not everyone owns or wants to own all the Criterion movies, and there is no real order to them like there is with the Bonds! So, I ask all you trusty Criterion fans to help me:

These sets will have to feature a random group of 6 movies from Criterion's list linked above, released or announced. I can though, put them in groups of the most popular first. This will make it so the first and even second set will contain movies that most will own, then from there, the other sets will contain the less desired titles...

I am however not a great source of knowledge for Criterion movies, so I ask you all to help me by listing what you think should be in at least the first two sets.

So, from the linke page of 42 films, please pick the top 12 movies, with the top six that would go in the first set. For those keen, you could also list films for the other sets as well.

I don't want to have to make more than one version of this set, so whatever the majority thinks will be the final set contents.

In total, with the 42 currently released and announced titles, there would be exactly 7 sets, so that will be the final result; with of course more to come in the future.

Thank you everyone for your help!

bpm,
With all due respect to your talent for custom covers, and especially your James Bond series, I just can't see this same kind of scheme being applicable toward Criterion titles, but I guess if there are members that have enquired about it, then I guess there must be an audience for this kind of thing.

I think for your answers, it would be best to ask the members that have enquired about such types of cases for the Criterion titles. I just think that the general populace of actual fans of Criterion's film output value their films in a sense that this would almost seem blasphemous.

Never in a million years would I use a custom cover or case for a Criterion Blu-Ray.

Personally, one of the things I like about Criterion is their covers. But because you are a designer and you have your own perspective of what design you want, I can understand you wanting to redo your own covers for personal. But the Criterion covers...for me, I would never replace them.

Bare in mind, there are some people who have done their own custom covers (fake covers) for certain films here.

But if there is a demand and people are wanting you to design covers go for it. I'm assuming what you are offering is work done by you via pro bono?

UPDATE: Just checked out the Custom Cover Thread. Wow! Great designs on there but is there a really big demand outside of the person who created it to get rid of their original artwork? Or are these more or less designers showcasing their design work for their portfolios? BPM-Looks like you have a good-sized following on the thread for your design work! Great job! Hope you create your own thread on The Auteurs.

Is it likely that Criterion will ever release a David Lynch film?

That would be excellent. Mulholland Dr. would be my first choice, but all would be welcome.

Mulholland Drive is already coming out by Studio Canal/Lionsgate. I don't see Lynch ever working with Criterion, mainly because he's not interested in extras or commentaries. He wants the films to stand for themselves.

I agree...I think it would be a great candidate for a Criterion release. Consequently, the LA Film Critics Association just named it the best film of the decade.

Have there been any official announcements from Lionsgate about this? I know they're releasing three Studio Canal films next month (The Ladykillers, Ran, and Contempt), but I haven't heard of any others...

Also, I understand where you're coming from regarding Lynch not doing commentaries/extras. I can, however, think of a few titles where he seemed to contribute some stuff(Wild At Heart Special Edition, Twin Peaks Gold Box, etc.)

I'm fairly certain that Lionsgate isn't releasing Mulholland Drive since Universal owns it

First off, I'm not asking if you would use it, I am merely asking what Criterion fans would see as the top covers to go in a set. I try to make set covers to help save space on the shelf. Your response does not do me any good.

Second, I love the style of the Criterion covers and want to duplicate that in the set covers.

If no one is willing to give some titles, than I will just leave it here and go back to the custom cover thread.

Thank you,

bpm
