I appreciate the feedback (and link). In terms of picture quality, what sets the Arrow apart from the CC? It'd be a pity if Shock took the apparently beautiful new master and cramped its style with compression or a botched encode.

From br.com

Cinema Cult specs

Video - Codec: MPEG-4 AVC Resolution: 1080p Aspect ratio: 1.85:1 Original aspect ratio: 1.85:1

Audio - English: DTS-HD Master Audio 4.0 Music: LPCM 2.0

Subtitles - None

Discs -Blu-ray Disc Single disc (1 BD-50)

Arrow specs

Video - Codec: MPEG-4 AVC (34.97 Mbps) Resolution: 1080p Aspect ratio: 1.83:1 Original aspect ratio: 1.85:1

Audio - English: DTS-HD Master Audio 4.0 English: LPCM 2.0 (48kHz, 16-bit) Music: LPCM 2.0

Subtitles - English SDH

Discs - Blu-ray Disc Single disc (1 BD-50)

I threw both discs in earlier today, and do feel the Arrow image looks slightly superior, but not by to much, and the CC is still very watchable. Unfortunately, there are no Subs/ Closed Captions on the CC release should that be an issue. But for just short of AUS $10, it's a pretty cheap grab.

Confirmed it def is Region A compatible & extras played too.

This is printed in the booklet that comes with the Arrow version:

Quote:
The Fury has been exclusively restored in collaboration with Arrow Video, Carlotta Films, and Shock Entertainment for this release. All work was overseen by James White at Deluxe Digital Cinema - EMEA, London.
I was always under the impression that the Arrow Films and Cinema Cult discs had the same video encode. I have never done a direct comparison between them because I don't own both versions, so I decided to ask a member earlier tonight if they could do a BDinfo scan of the Australian disc so that this would be known for sure. Here is a screenshot of the BDinfo scan of the Arrow version taken from caps-a-holic.com:

and here is the BDinfo scan of the Australian disc that I was given tonight:

The video bitrates are identical.

Many thanks for your taking the time to compare the two releases. That sounds pretty good: As long as the CC's in the ballpark--even somewhere in the outfield--of the Arrow on PQ, I'll be happy to have access to a disc sporting the new transfer...which I'd ruled out before the "Shock," A-compatible solution presented itself.

One day, maybe Caps-a-holic will pick up the spare and post some caps of the Cinema Cult, fill in the blanks on the specs: average bit-rate, etc. I'm not too worried about having to co-exist with a superior Arrow edition I'm region locked from enjoying; it's happened before, and I have all the necessary coping skills!

See Cevolution's post above, it's the same video encode as the Arrow.

Thanks, Cevo.

You posted just prior to my replying to donthitpause. That data would seem to rule out any picture differences.

At any rate, I imagine it's very difficult to do A/B comparisons on these things with any degree of certainty about subtle differences, so I can see how donthit thought he was onto something there.

Thanks again to you both for looking into this for me.

No problem at all AllOuttaBubbleGum, glad I could help.

If you don't have a good eye for these sort of things, an easy way to check if the encodes of 2 different discs are the same, is to select several time codes (if the discs share the same scene selection points then use these spots for your time codes), and remember or write down the bitrates at those particular points. If they match up then the encodes are obviously the same.

Thanks for the tip; I'll keep that in mind.

Now that it turns out the CC is--with the exception of a few missing extras--a clone of the Arrow, the only thing that remains is to do something about Cinema Cult's drab graphic design. On the other hand, now that I've been looking some of their other releases over...maybe it's growing on me?

Speaking of: if anyone on the board has CC's edition of Tobe Hooper's Lifeforce: Whose encode is it? They're using Shout/Scream Factory's art, so that's probably a clue. I was hoping they had another deal with Arrow...and that their disc would offer a region free work-around for better video. Edit: I see blu-ray.com lists an average bit-rate of 23.00 mbps for the Cinema Cult, which lines up with the Shout release, but I don't know if that was assumed based on the shared artwork situation...

Does anyone have any info on the House on Sorority Row blu ray? I want it on Blu, and the US Scorpion release is hard to come by and pricey, but on sites like walmart and deepdiscount, there is a cheaper version that I researched is an Australian import from Shock, but on those sites it doesn't have the same cover as on the Shock site with the Australian rating, it has the US Scorpion cover, so I'm confused as to what I'd even be getting.

Is it 2 disc? Same transfer? Same extras?

You'll be getting the one with the grey borders and the rating. Its a 17gb disc, re-encoded (not very well from what I've heard), and its barebones

It's not re-encoded as such (it is in the sense that it loses the extras but, from the files sizes as reported on capsaholic, A/V wise it's a direct port)

Here's the comparitive specs for House on Sorority Row:

Cinema Cult (AU):

Code:
Disc Title: THE HOUSE ON SORORITY ROW
Disc Size: 17,549,311,479 bytes
Protection: AACS
BD-Java: Yes
Playlist: 00002.MPLS
Size: 14,489,954,304 bytes
Length: 1:31:53.257
Total Bitrate: 21.03 Mbps
Video: MPEG-4 AVC Video / 18000 kbps / 1080p / 23.976 fps / 16:9 / High Profile 4.1
Audio: Undetermined / DTS-HD Master Audio / 2.0 / 48 kHz / 1824 kbps / 24-bit (DTS Core: 2.0 / 48 kHz / 1509 kbps / 24-bit)
Scorpion (US):

Code:
Disc Title: THE_HOUSE_ON_SORORITY_ROW
Disc Size: 22,689,471,572 bytes
Protection: AACS
BD-Java: Yes
Playlist: 00003.MPLS
Size: 14,820,771,840 bytes
Length: 1:31:53.257
Total Bitrate: 21.51 Mbps
Video: MPEG-4 AVC Video / 18000 kbps / 1080p / 23.976 fps / 16:9 / High Profile 4.1
Audio: English / DTS-HD Master Audio / 2.0 / 48 kHz / 1824 kbps / 24-bit (DTS Core: 2.0 / 48 kHz / 1509 kbps / 24-bit)
Audio: English / Dolby Digital Audio / 2.0 / 48 kHz / 192 kbps / DN -4dB
Audio: English / Dolby Digital Audio / 2.0 / 48 kHz / 192 kbps / DN -4dB
So as you can see by the specs the video bitrate and DTS-HD audio are the same, however as mentioned already the CC loses the extras (commentaries, special features and DVD).

Fellas,

Can anyone here comment on the local edition of Serial Mom.

... How does it compare technically vs the US/UK releases?

I ask cause the Shout Factory disc has a slight error during a scene.
