Rumor - PS4 firmware 1.7 to launch next week, friends list stability and game sorting may be included.
Quote:
The latest PlayStation 4 firmware (1.7) – which is set to include options to turn off HDCP and export captures to USB devices - may be launching as early next week, according to an industry insider.

PlayStation’s English Community Manager, Chris Owen set gaming pulses racing earlier today on Twitter by mentioning how much is in-store for PlayStation gamers this week – an admission which many have interpreted as being related to the much-touted PS4 firmware update. To add further weight to proceedings, industry insider and noted NeoGAF user, Tidux has taken to a thread on the forum related to the new firmware and mentioned that there’s, ‘’plans to announce this week, and release the next’’. Also, he has alluded to friend list stability fixes as well as a new, game sorting ability, which may-or-may-not make it into the latest update.

Goodness, so much news coming out this week o/

— Chris Owen (@Envisager_) April 14, 2014

Previously, Tidux has lifted the lid on the PS4’s capturing resolution as far back as September, which certainly gives credence to his latest posts about the aforementioned firmware. Still, until official confirmation chalk this down as pure speculation; speculation that may become fact in the coming days.

If they listen to their fans, the sorting feature will be there.

It better be bc the PDM is a mess. I have like 20 items on that horizontal plane. They need to add options to categorize content, create folders, be able to "favorite" games. Id also move all media content to a different line. Have it be Media - Setttings - Games

Agreed. I've been saying the same thing. There needs to be 3 separate lines; the top line that includes the store, settings, friends, etc. The next line to be games. And then the next line be all apps/multi-media. Also, have the ability to create our own folders within the games line and the apps/multi-media line.

Another thing I'd like to see them do is update the voice commands to extend it's vocabulary. I don't see any reason why we shouldn't be able to turn the system on from power save mode by voice. I also don't see why we shouldn't be able to eject disks or pause, rewind, and play blu rays by voice command.

Version 1.70 Update information

Quote:
On the heels of the announcement that PlayStation 4 has sold over 7 million units, Sony has unveiled its upcoming firmware update for the console.

Firmware 1.70 brings with it additions that should please PS4 owners. It has “features that were incorporated as a result of your great feedback,” Sony’s Scott McCarthy wrote.

The first addition is something called SHAREfactory, a “new rich video editor app for PS4 that makes it easy for you to customize your gameplay videos.” You can see a video showing off SHAREfactory below.

The second addition is the ability for players to not only upload their SHAREfactory-edited videos directly to Facebook, but to put them on an external USB-connected storage device. “Other PS4 SHARE enhancements include the ability to change the recording time of your gameplay to shorter increments, the ability to change who you share your clips with on the SHARE screen, and the removal of default saves for screenshots and video clips,” according to McCarthy.

Interestingly, “the 1.70 update will allow you to switch off HDCP, enabling you to capture video directly from your HDMI output so you can record and share longer clips of your gameplay sessions,” he continued.

The final significant update doesn’t have to do with gameplay capture, but with the ability to download games early. Firmware 1.70 will allow players to pre-load the games they pre-order, providing more immediate access to brand-new games. This means that when a game comes out, you don’t have to download it once it appears for sale on the PlayStation Store. Now, you’ll be given an option to download it several days early, so you’re ready to play the first minute it’s available.

It’s unclear when PlayStation 4 firmware update 1.70 will be available to download, though the post indicates it will be soon.

Hmm, I hope the ability to export captures to USB doesn't only apply to video. I was hoping it would work with screenshots as well.

Arguably every feature of the PS3 should have been included day 1, but that's not realistic from a software standpoint.

It took me less time to Google ffs and found out it means For ****s Sake in less time than it took to reply.

Why does pre-loading have to be a firmware addition? That doesn't make a lot of sense.

Honestly, I'm not too excited about the update this time around. What I'd like to see are friend notifications, the ability to change my background, sorting, and the ability to remove app icons from the streaming menu for services I don't ever plan on downloading, or at least moving the ones I do have downloaded to the top of the menu.

The media server stuff has zero impact on my life, nor does MP3 playback. I know some people out there really want this capability, but I am not among said people.
